Luke Perry played Dylan until midway through the sixth season of "90210". He was the first starring cast member to voluntarily quit the show. He returned part way through the ninth season and remained until the show ended after ten years.

While Brenda was in Paris, Dylan began seeing Kelly. Brenda broke up with Dylan later on in the third season and he began publicly seeing Kelly, leading to a big conflict between her and Brenda. A few episodes later, Dylan's father was released from prison and wanted Dylan to invite his friends over for a celebration party in "Back in the High Life Again". Kelly was the only one who showed up for the party, and Dylan told her he chose her to date.

Erica, played by Noley Thornton, and her mother Suzanne Steele showed up on Dylan's doorstep in the fourth season episode "Somewhere in the World it's Christmas". Erica's father was Jack McKay, making her and Dylan half-siblings. Over the course of the season, Dylan and Erica grew closer, but Suzanne and her boyfriend were scamming Dylan for his money.

In the eighth season, Brandon and Kelly discovered Erica working as a prostitute in downtown Los Angeles.

In the episode "Hello Life, Goodbye Beverly Hills", Dylan asked Kelly to go on a trip around the world with him. Brandon, her boyfriend at that time, countered with an engagement ring. After thinking it over, she chose neither of them.

His wife Toni died in the episode "One Wedding and a Funeral" and Dylan decided to leave town shortly afterwards.
