After Don becomes a partner in the Sterling Cooper agency, there is a vacancy for Head of Account Services. "Duck" Phillips has been working for a large London advertising agency and desires to return to New York.

Pete Campbell tells Don, "I have the loyalty of our most important clients." Mentioning two big clients by name, Pete adds, "These men trust me." Don replies that Pete has only been with the company for two and a half years, and someone will always be his senior.

Before Adam Whitman hangs himself, he prepares a shoe box full of photos, papers and mementos to be delivered to his half-brother Don. The ever-conniving Pete Campbell steals the box in hopes of finding something incriminating against Don Draper that might help in advancing advance his career.

Ken finds the play, "Death is My Client" in Paul's office and begins to direct a hastily assembled impromptu office cast. Salvatore plays the hero as Joan holds the script. There is a scene where Salvatore and Joan look at each other, and Sal pulls her in for a dramatic kiss.

Pete strongly desires to be promoted to Don's old position and feels that he has gathered enough dirt on Don to blackmail him. Lt. Don Draper is awaiting 20 men to build a field hospital, and is surprised when an Army truck stops and Pvt. Dick Whitman is the only passenger. Shortly thereafter the two soldiers briefly come under fire. Later, while lighting cigarettes, Dick drops one onto some spilled gasoline which ignites a huge explosion, injuring himself and killing Lt. Draper. Dick removes the dog tags from the unrecognizable dead body of the lieutenant, and assumes Draper's identity.

Don coolly lights a cigarette as Pete relates Don/Dick's past to senior partner Bertram Cooper. To Pete's dismay Cooper flatly doesn't care and says, "This country was built and run by men with worse stories than whatever you've imagined here."
