Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" opens with the main character Don Draper scribbling notes. Where is he?

Answer: Bar

Don Draper, portrayed by actor Jon Hamm, is the Creative Director at the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency. Amid the smoke and merriment of a classy New York bar, he sits alone, struggling to come up with a new idea for a cigarette company client.
2. What brand of cigarettes does Don Draper smoke?

Answer: Lucky Strike

In light of recent government regulations banning health claims in cigarette advertisements, Don is drawing a blank on coming up with an ad campaign for one of his big clients. To make matters worse, he is unable to get an Old Gold-smoking bus boy to consider switching brands to Lucky Strike.
3. The Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency has an abundance of young, ambitious junior account executives striving to move up the ladder. Which one of these men is having a bachelor party before his upcoming marriage?

Answer: Pete

Actor Vincent Kartheiser plays the role of Pete Campbell, who openly aspires to take over Don Drapers job as Creative Director for the agency. Pete even stoops to fishing a company psychologist's report on smokers from Don's wastepaper basket.
4. What is the name of the agency's newest secretary?

Answer: Peggy

Actress Elisabeth Moss plays the seemingly innocent, pony-tailed 'new girl' Peggy Olsen, who is beginning her first day among the young male wolves at Sterling Cooper. She is taken under the wing of the red-headed bombshell, Joan Harris, portrayed by actress Christina Hendricks, as there is much for the Brooklyn-born girl to learn about life in Manhattan.
5. There is a calendar on the wall of Peggy's doctor's examining room. What is the year?

Answer: 1960

It is March, 1960 and the decade of the fifties is just a few days in the past. It should come as no surprise to see a doctor light up a cigarette as he enters an examining room. Joan, who later admits to having seen her physician's vacation home, has recommended Peggy to her friend who prescribes birth control pills to unmarried women. With a cigarette dangling from his mouth, the doctor examines Peggy and admonishes her to not become a 'strumpet'.
6. What clothing tip was given to the new secretary?

Answer: Wear shorter skirts

Upon first meeting Peggy in Don Draper's office, Pete Campbell asks if she's Amish because of her unflattering clothes. He suggests that she should show her new boss more leg. Later, as Joan takes Peggy to deliver gifts to the telephone switchboard ladies, one of the operators also recommends a shorter hemline.
7. The agency is striving to attract a Jewish-owned department store as a new client and is scrambling to find someone of the same religion to sit in on the initial meeting to make the client more comfortable. Where did they find someone for the job?

Answer: Mail room

Actor John Slattery plays the part of Roger Sterling, a senior partner in the ad agency. Roger want to attract Menken's Department Store, a Jewish-owned business, as a new client, and asks Don Draper if he has ever hire a Jew. Draper replies, "Not on my watch", but jokingly volunteers to go find one in a deli. Upon entering the Menken meeting, Don mistakenly introduces himself to the mail room employee, and is surprised to find that a beautiful woman now runs the family business. Don is obviously not used to aggressive women and Rachel Menken's assertive manner unnerves him, causing him to abruptly walk out of the meeting.
8. What one word did Don Draper come up with at the last second to save his cigarette company's account?

Answer: Toasted

Uncharacteristic of his creative genius, Don Draper was unable to come up with a single new idea for a Lucky Strike advertising campaign. In light of a "Reader's Digest" article on the dangers of smoking, as well as new government restrictions on cigarette ads' health claims, Don sat in a smoke-filled conference room with a blank notebook as the men around the table coughed.

When Roger turned the meeting over to him, Don silently fiddled with some papers until Pete Campbell tried to save the meeting with some 'death wish' concept that he got from a report he retrieved from Draper's trash can.

As the disgruntled Lucky Strike people were leaving the room, Don stopped them and asked how their cigarettes were made. As the manufacturing process was explained to him he heard the word 'toasted', and quickly explained that advertising is all about happiness, and believing that whatever you are doing is okay.

The cigarette people were sold on the idea that everyone else's tobacco is poison, but Lucky Strike is 'toasted'.
9. Although Don Draper is lukewarm to the idea, the agency is interested in taking on a politician as a client. Who is the young, handsome navy hero with presidential aspirations?

Answer: Richard Nixon

No, this is not a trick question. Dick Nixon did in fact serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While his youth, looks and heroism as of 1960 might be subject to a difference of opinions, Roger Sterling was most interested in the agency taking on a presidential campaign.
10. Who came knocking on Peggy's apartment door after the bachelor party?

Answer: Pete

As Peggy was completing her first day of work, she thanked her boss, Don Draper, for standing up for her when Pete Campbell began insulting her clothing and appearance. She then coyly placed her hand on top of Don's, who immediately removed it and told her, "I'm your boss.

Not your boyfriend." He then chastised her for letting Pete go through his wastepaper basket. It was surprising when Peggy, without hesitation, invited a highly intoxicated Pete into her apartment.
