1. John Walton Jr.

Answer: The Waltons

John Walton Jr. is known as "John-Boy". He is the eldest of the seven children of John Walton Sr. and his wife, Olivia. John-Boy has a desire to be a writer and is the first member of the Walton family to go to college and graduate from it. When the United States entered World War Two, John-Boy joined the army and started writing for the military newspaper "Stars and Stripes".

Some of the starring actors in the series include Richard Thomas as John-Boy (in the first 6 seasons), Ralph Waite is John Walton Sr., Michael Learned as Olivia Walton, John-Boy's mother.
2. Darrin Stephens

Answer: Bewitched

Darrin Stephens is a common man who happens to get married to a witch. On top of that, his wife's mother is not fond of him and tries to use her powers to create a rift between him and his wife. The role of Darrin Stephens was played initially by Dick York and, when York was unable to continue due to health problems, was taken over by Dick Sargent.

Other stars are Elizabeth Montgomery as Darrin's wife, Samantha, Agnes Moorehead as his mother-in-law, Endora and David White as Larry Tate, Darrin's boss who is obsessed with his money, but can become extremely sentimental at times.
3. J.R. Ewing

Answer: Dallas

J.R. Ewing is the main antagonist of "Dallas". He is an oil tycoon, who schemes constantly against his business rivals. J.R. is a deeply amoralisitic character with psychopathic tendencies. In one of the most famous moments of the show, J.R. was shot by an unnmaed assailant, something that made viewrs ger hooked on their TV when "Dallas" was airing.

It took months to be revealed that the assailant was sister-in-law, Kristin Shepard (portrayed by Mary Crosby), who was pregnant with J.R.'s child.
4. Orry Main

Answer: North and South

Orry Main is the owner of a plantation in antebellum South Carolina. On his way to the US Military Academy at West Point, he met a Northerner, George Hazard and the two of them formed a friendship that endured through the cataclysm of the American Civil War.

The character of Orry Main was played by Patrick Swayze. Other stars of the series are James Read, as Orry's friend George Hazard, Lesley Anne-Down, as Madeleine Fabray, Orry's lover and later wife, Lloyd Bridges as Confederate president Jefferson Davis and Hal Holbrook as US president Abraham Lincoln.
5. Hawkeye Pierce

Answer: M*A*S*H

The show M*A*S*H depicts the trials and aspirations of a US mobile army surgical hospital 9hence the title) during the Korean War. Many people considered the show to be an allegory to the Vietnam War, which was still in progress when the show aired. The show was in fact an adaptation of the 1970 movie with the same title, which was in turn an adaptation of Richard Hooker's 1968 novel entitled "MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors".

It is largely considered as one of the best TV shown ever to be aired, at least in the USA.

Some of the starring cast members are Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce, Loretta Swit as Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan and Jamie Farr as Max Klinger.
6. Steve McGarrett

Answer: Hawaii Five-O

Steve McGarrett is a detective working for a fictional secret police force operating in the Hawaiian Islands, named Hawaii Five-O, because Hawaii was the 50th state to enter the USA. For the twelve seasons the series aired, McGarrett and his subordinates combated organized crime syndicates, spies and other criminals.

In most episodes, at the end, McGarrett has caught his opponent and sends them to prison, saying: "Book 'em". The role of McGarrett was played by Jack Lord. His assistant, Danny Williams, was portrayed by James McArthur.
7. Ralph de Bricassart

Answer: The Thorn Birds

Ralph de Bricassart is a Catholic priest (who later climbs the ranks of the Catholic Church and is made a Cardinal) who has been sent to Australia because of insulting a bishop. There, Ralph meets Mary Carson, the wealthy owner of a vast sheep station known as Drogheda. Mary is infatuated with him, but when she sees that Ralph has developed an affection for her niece, Meggie she schemes to separate them, using her money to achieve Ralph's quick rise in the Church. Ralph de Bricassart was portrayed by Richard Chamberlain, Meggie Cleary by Rachel Ward, Mary Carson by Barbara Stanwyck.
8. John Blackthorne

Answer: Shogun

The events of the series take place in 17th century Japan. John Blackthorne is the English navigator of the Dutch ship Erasmus, which is marooned in Japan. Blackthorne is captured by Japanese samurai. Being an Englishman and a Protestant, Blackthorne is at a disadvantage, since the Japanese culture is alien to him and most other Europeans in Japan are Catholics, which means that they consider Blackthorne a heretic.

However, Blackthrone catches the eye of Yoshi Toranaga, a lord who believes his destiny is to become shogun and the two form an alliance. John Blackthorne is portrayed by Ricahrd Chamberlain, Lord Toranaga by Toshiro Mifune and Lord Ishido, one of Toranaga's enemies, is portrayed by Nobuo Kaneko.
9. Ricky Ricardo

Answer: I Love Lucy

Ricky Ricardo (full name: Ricardo Alberto Fernando Ricardo y de Acha, as per his own words) is a Cuban-American bandleader and husband of Lucy, whose full name is Lucille Esmeralda McGuillicuddy. The series revolves around the troubles Lucy gets into, as well as the couple's relations with their neighbors, the Mertzes. Ricky Ricardo was portrayed by Desi Arnaz and Lucy by Lucille Ball.

Other stars were Vivian Vance and William Frawley as Ethel and Fred Mertz.
10. Jed Clampett

Answer: The Beverly Hillbillies

Jed is the patriarch of the Clampett family, a family of Tennessee Hillbillies who have found a lot of oil in their land, have become rich and have relocated to Beverly Hills. The role of Jed Clampett was played by Buddy Ebsen. Other members of the cast are Irene Ryan, who protrays Granny, Jed's mother-in-law, Donna Douglas as Elly May, Jed's daughter and Max Baer, Jr., as Jethro Bodine, the son of a cousin of Jed's.
