Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Circa 1966 ... "Space, the final frontier ..."

Answer: NCC-1701

In the year 2265 (according to the series storyline), Captain James T. Kirk, along with his crew of 430 were assigned to a five year mission to explore deep-space on the sci-fi series "Star Trek".

The registry number of their space craft, the United Federation of Planets Starship "Enterprise" was NCC-1701.

"Star Trek" aired on the NBC Television Network for three seasons, with 79 episodes. The series was canceled due to low ratings. Several years later, the re-runs of the series became a major success on the television syndication market.

William Shatner starred as Captain James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy starred as the ship's first officer, Commander/Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley was featured as the ships doctor, Leonard "Bones" McCoy.
2. Circa 1952 and Circa 1967 ... "This is the city, Los Angeles, California. I work here, I carry a badge".

Answer: 714

Through two versions (1952-1959 and 1967-1970) of the poplar police procedural crime drama series "Dragnet", Sergeant Joe Friday (Jack Webb) carried Los Angeles Police Department badge number 714.

During the final season of the series' first run (1958-1959), Sgt. Friday was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and maintained the same badge number.
When the series returned for its second run in 1967, Webb chose to return his character's rank to sergeant. Webb felt that a police lieutenant would not spend as much time on the streets investigating crimes as would a sergeant.

Numerous conflicting explanations exist as to why the number 714 was used as Joe Friday's badge number. Some sources claim the number was a tribute to baseball slugger Babe Ruth, who had 714 career homeruns. Other sources state that the selection was to honor Jack Webb's mother, who was born on July 14th (7/14). One report was that Webb wanted to use the lucky number 777 as a badge number and later chose to add the last two numbers and placing them after the first "7", creating the number 714. The most consistent explanation given was that his close friend and "Dragnet" police liaison, Dan Cooke, who actually wore LAPD badge 714, loaned the badge number to Webb for the series.

Upon his death on December 23, 1982, Jack Webb was given a full LAPD funeral, an unprecedented event for a non police officer. LAPD Chief Daryl Gates ordered all flags at LAPD facilities to be flown at half-mast. Gates then permanently retired LAPD Badge number 714 in honor of Webb.
3. Circa 1968 ... "Book 'em Danno"

Answer: Five-O

"Book 'em Danno" was often the final words spoken by Detective Captain Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) at the conclusion of episodes of the 1968 police drama series "Hawaii Five-O". McGarrett's order was directed to his second in command, Detective Danny "Danno" Williams (James MacArthur) after the case had been solved and the perpetrator was being taken into custody.

"Hawaii Five-O" aired for 12 seasons (1968-1980). One of the major attractions of the series was the beautiful scenery. With only a few exceptions, the series was filmed on location in Hawaii, with more than 70 percent of the scenes in each episode highlighting the outdoor beauty of the Hawaiian Islands.

Steve McGarrett headed an elite special state police unit, and reported only to the state's governor. The unit, "Five-O" was named in honor of Hawaii becoming the fiftieth state.

As a way of differentiating the 1968 series from the updated 2010 series, a slight change was made in the series title. The original series, "Hawaii Five-O" was pronounced "Five-Oh", with the letter "O" being used.
The 2010 series used the name "Hawaii Five-0", using a "zero" in the title.

Rounding out the cast of the 1968 series were Kam Fong as Detective Chin-Ho Kelley, and Gilbert Lani Kauhi, known professionally as Zulu, as Kono Kalakaua.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and Roger Smith starred as Stu Bailey and Jeff Spencer, two hip private detectives in the drama series "77 Sunset Strip".

77 Sunset Strip was the street address of their detective agency in a famous section of Hollywood, California known as the "Sunset Strip".

Visible during the opening credits of each episode was the then famous celebrity restaurant "Dino's Lodge", located next door to the detective agency. The restaurant featured a large neon sign in front, with a picture of entertainer Dean Martin's face. The restaurant, located at 8524 Sunset Blvd. was actually owned by Dean Martin.

On the series, the parking lot shared by the detective agency and the restaurant was managed by a Hip-talking parking attendant known to everyone as "Kookie", who was always seen combing his pompadour hairstyle, and wisecracking with his customers. In later seasons, Kookie left his job and became a member of the detective agency. His full name, Gerald Lloyd Kookson III was prominently displayed on the door of his new office.

7. Circa 1961 ... "There's a hold-up in the Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out in fights ..."

Answer: 54

Fred Gwynne and Joe E. Ross starred in the 1961 police comedy series "Car 54, Where Are You?).

On the series, New York City Police Officers Gunther Toody (Ross) and Francis Muldoon (Gwynne), patrolled the Bronx section of the city in their assigned patrol car, "Car 54".

The series followed the adventures, or misadventures of two patrol officers as they worked their shift in the (fictitious) 53rd police precinct. Most situations the pair encountered resulted in hilarious results.

"Car 54, Where Are You?" aired for two seasons (1961 and 1962) with 60 30-minute episodes, all filmed in black and white.

As the series was filmed on location on the streets of New York, the police cars used for the series were painted bright red and white to avoid being confused with actual police cars that were at the time painted green and black with white roofs. On black and white television, the color scheme of the vehicles appeared authentic.

The series was known for its theme song, written by the series creator, writer, and director, Nat Hiken:

♫♫ "There's a hold-up in the Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out in fights;
There's a traffic jam in Harlem that's backed up to Jackson Heights;
There's a scout troop short a child, Khrushchev's due in Idlewild!
Car 54, Where are you?"♫♫

*For those too young to know or remember, "Khrushchev" refers to the then leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev. "Idlewild" was one of New York's major airports. Idlewild was later renamed John F. Kennedy Airport.

Eddie always wore a "Lord Fauntleroy" suit with short pants.
