Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Chapter One", what was the name of the young boy who vanished in Hawkins, Indiana?

Answer: Will Byers

The full name of the episode is "Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers". Will and his pals were playing a game in the basement of Mike Wheeler's house. It was sort of like their indoor meeting place, though Will had his own fort called Castle Byers as well. After they had to pause their game, Will rode his bicycle home, and was vanished by a mysterious creature inside the shed in his backyard. Benny Hammond was the diner owner who was killed after helping a young girl.

Noah Schnapp played Will. Jack Sawyer and Davis Garraty are characters from the world of writer Stephen King. "Stranger Things" was created by Matt and Ross Duffer, who've also written for the TV series "Wayward Pines".
2. As seen written on the screen, in what year did season one take place?

Answer: 1983

Episode one began on November 6, 1983 and the finale episode took place near Christmas of that same year. For me, it was like stepping back in time. I was ten years old in 1983. The events occurred in and around the town of Hawkins, Indiana and the people affected by the opening of a mysterious dimension called the Upside Down.
3. Which of the young boys allowed Eleven to stay at his house as she hid from the Hawkins Lab and Dr. Brenner?

Answer: Mike

Eleven, who the boys nicknamed El, had supernatural powers. She had inadvertently created the link between our world and the Upside Down after Dr. Brenner used her powers. Her mother had been part of an LSD drug trial (seemed like a nod to Stephen King's "Firestarter") while she was pregnant with El. Dr. Brenner and the lab stole the baby (real name Jane), and used her powers to spy (felt like a nod to Dean Koontz's "Soul Survivor"). She could astral project herself into places and hear conversations. But, while doing so, she unlocked a way into the parallel place called the Upside Down, which reflected a horror version of reality.

Finn Wolfhard played Mike Wheeler and Millie Bobby Brown played Eleven.
4. Nancy Wheeler's friend Barb was taken during a get-together at Steve Harrington's house.

Answer: True

Barb and Nancy were not part of the popular crowd, and both were good students. For some time prior to the series' opening, Nancy had been getting together with the popular Steve Harrington. Barb did not seem to like Nancy's interest in Steve and his friends, but did her best to support Nancy, who was Mike's older sister. While being a "fifth wheel" at Steve's house, Barb sat on the diving board of the pool while the foursome went inside to fool around. Meanwhile, Jonathan Byers was nearby watching the events unfold, and taking pictures. He'd been trying to find clues in his brother Will's disappearance, but also seemed to have a romantic interest in Nancy. Right under Jonathan's nose, the creature snatched Barb away from Steve's pool. This ignited Nancy's interest in finding what had happened to Barb and Will.

Shannon Purser played Barb.
5. Joyce was able to communicate with her son through the use of which of these?

Answer: Electricity

She first received a phone call that resulted in her phone being burned up (this happened twice). Then he communicated through both lamps and radio. Finally she hung up holiday string lights all over the house and painted letters under some of them. She knew he was alive, even after his "body" was found by State Trooper O'Bannon in the quarry. The body was a rubber doll filled with what appeared to be cotton. Joyce Byers also knew her son was running out of time. It was Will's friends who figured out, with El's help, that Will was stuck inside the Upside Down. They first thought of the Vale of Shadows from the game "Dungeons and Dragons", but El was able to give them the real name.

Winona Ryder played Will and Jonathan's mom, Joyce Byers. Automatic writing is a psychic phenomenon where people write without even realizing they are doing so, and said to be a link between the writer and something trying to communicate remotely. Appearing in fire was a form of communication in the "Harry Potter" franchise.
6. Who broke into the government lab in Hawkins, and found the entrance to the creature's world in "Chapter Five"?

Answer: Chief Hopper

Joyce and Hopper seemed to have known each other for a very long time, and Hopper was invested in finding Will. He'd lost his own daughter to cancer, and was also the person who discovered that Will's "body" was a fake. He got into the lab and past security. He was apprehended before he could enter the Upside Down, and awoke the next morning back inside his own trailer home.

David Harbour played the Hawkins Police Chief Jim Hopper. He also appeared in the 2016 film "Suicide Squad".
7. Of these choices, who was the first to enter the Upside Down?

Answer: Nancy

It was Will, Barb, Nancy, and then Hopper and Joyce together. Nancy was in there briefly, and she entered through an opening in a tree trunk. She and Jonathan were in the woods searching for clues, when they came upon a dying deer. Something snatched the deer away and the teens became scared. Though, when Nancy spotted the opening in the tree, she did not hesitate for long before she went inside. Fortunately, Jonathan was able to help get her out before the opening closed for good. The creature was able to create an opening, but once it re-entered the Upside Down, the opening would close shortly thereafter. This experience helped Nancy and Jonathan figure out it was attracted to a location by blood.

Charlie Heaton played Jonathan Byers.
8. In "Chapter Seven", who advised Dustin and the boys on how to make a sensory deprivation tank?

Answer: Mr. Clarke

Mr. Clarke seemed to be a favorite teacher for the boys, and Dustin called him at home at night and asked for help making a "bathtub" for Eleven (her own reference to the SDT). Then, Joyce and Hopper helped the kids carry out their plans. They set up a swimming pool in the gymnasium of the middle school, and Eleven was able to use it to go back inside the Upside Down.

Randall P. Havens played Mr. Clarke. He has also appeared on the series "Halt and Catch Fire", "The Vampire Diaries", and "Sleepy Hollow".
9. Eleven found Barb was still alive when she entered the Upside Down in "Chapter Seven: The Bathtub".

Answer: False

Barb had died in there, but Will was still alive. Will was hiding in the Upside Down version of his fort, Castle Byers. But, he was very ill and running out of time.
10. Which of these did NOT happen in the season finale "Chapter Eight: The Upside Down"?

Answer: Jonathan was killed inside the Upside Down

While Joyce and Hopper searched for Will in the Upside Down, the creature broke through into the real world. Nancy and Jonathan lured it into his house, and Steve arrived on scene during this time. The three worked together, eventually setting the creature on fire. But, that did not kill it. Eleven was the one who defeated the creature and seemed to have obliterated herself in doing so, which reminded me of the end of the movie "Powder".

The creature killed Dr. Brenner before it was killed, or vanquished, or sent back to wherever it came from, as it was left a little unclear. And, it appeared as though the series might be concluded with the rescue of Will and his homecoming, but a few last scenes made it clear there could easily be more to come.
