The fourth season begins five months after the end of the third season. In that time span, Taylor did go to Paris but by the first episode of the season, "The Avengers", she was back in America (though she pretended to be in France when she spoke to Summer on the phone).

After Ryan almost caught up with him in Mexico, Volchok returned to Newport Beach and sought the legal counsel of Sandy Cohen. Ryan found out that Sandy was helping Volchok, so Sandy took Ryan to the motel where Volchok was staying and let him go in to "talk" to him. Ryan threw a few punches, but decided to make Volchok live with what he did.

Summer had become environmentally aware and an animal rights activist while trying not to think about Marissa. In "The Metamorphosis", she decided to be her old self again, but found out that she really had changed. She remained politically involved, but assured Seth that "I'm going shave my legs and wash my hair and be the best girlfriend I can be".

Viewers were first introduced to Spender in "The Sleeping Beauty". He went on a date with Julie, but turned out to be the son of Gordon "the Bullit" Bullit, who was also trying to woo Julie. Later on, with Spencer's help, Julie turned her and Kirsten's matchmaking business into a male prostitution ring.

Che came to Newport to apologize for making Summer the scapegoat in their plan to free rabbits from the research lab. She didn't want to talk to him, so he attached himself to her with handcuffs to make her listen to him.

In "The Chrismukk-huh?" Taylor originally thought that Marissa was alive, because the housekeeper at the Cooper house said that "Miss Cooper" was coming home from Berkeley that afternoon. The "Miss Cooper" turned out to be Kaitlin who had started college early.

In the parallel universe, Marissa had died three years earlier in Tijuana because Ryan had not been there to save her. Ryan came to realize that to get back to his real world he had to accept that Marissa was gone and move on with his life.

The accountant hired by Bullit turned out to be Frank Atwood - Ryan's father, fresh out of jail! In my opinion, this episode captured some of "The O.C" magic from earlier seasons - a shocking twist that ended in a dramatic cliffhanger, shady Atwood family members, secrets, lies, deception... you name it.

By the way, Ryan got back Taylor's purse that the woman dressed as an alien stole, and Summer was NOT pregnant - but Seth asked her to marry him anyways.

Summer accepted Seth's proposal, but then, in the next episode "The My Two Dads", had severe doubts. Seth was also regretting asking her, but neither one of them wanted to tell the other. Eventually they both realized that neither of them wanted to get married, but didn't want to be the first to admit it, so they conceived a series of plans to try to force the other to break it off - Seth tried to make Summer learn Hebrew and cook Jewish meals, Summer tried bluffing and saying she wanted to elope in Vegas immediately, and finally Seth said he needed to ask for Summer's father's permission.

He travelled to Seattle in the next episode to do so, and finally realized that he did want to marry Summer - unfortunately, she still didn't want to be engaged to him right away.

Henri-Michel arrived in Newport in "The French Connection" to promote his book. It was an erotic memoir about the previous summer he spent with Taylor and everyone in town read it - including Ryan. Henri-Michel's visit obviously caused a rift in Taylor and Ryan's relationship.

Henri-Michel decided to stay in town until Taylor chose to get back together with him or stay with Ryan. She eventually chose to be single for awhile... but that didn't last long.

In Che's vision, he fell in love with an otter, leading him to think that he was in love with Seth and that they were soul mates. Summer decided to devote her animal rights efforts to saving otters. Che eventually met a girl in an otter costume and realized that Seth was not the one for him.

He was also arrested at the end of the third season, under suspicion of burning down The Newport Group on purpose. He was never charged with arson though, as it was an accident. "The Groundhog Day" was also the episode in which Kirsten revealed she was pregnant.

In the episode "The Case of the Franks", Taylor and Ryan came to realize that Julie was in love with Frank Atwood, even though she had decided to remain with Bullit to make Kaitlin happy. Eventually Kaitlin realized that Julie loved Frank, and allowed her to be with him.

Newport Beach suffered a massive earthquake in "The Shake Up" and dealt with the after effects in "The Night Moves". Kirsten had fallen down the stairs and was concerned about the baby's health. Ryan had a huge piece of glass in his back and Seth had to get him to the hospital without Summer and Taylor knowing. Taylor's mother came to check on her and Taylor accidentally shot her in the foot with a flare gun (and the two resolved their differences).

At the end of the episode, the Cohen clan returned to their home which appeared unharmed on the outside - but was completely destroyed inside.

In the last episode of the season, the Cohens learned that their home could not be fixed. They tried looking for another mansion in Newport, but eventually Seth and Ryan travelled to Berkeley, California to try to buy back the home that the Cohens lived in when Seth was an infant. Julie was pregnant, with Frank's son, and getting married, to Bullit. Taylor was in Paris again, having broken up with Ryan sometime in the six months since the last episode, but was returning to Newport for Julie's wedding. Summer and Seth were planning once more to move to Rhode Island together. While visiting the Berkeley house, Kirsten went into labour and baby Sophie was born. Julie decided she couldn't get married without Kirsten, so Bullit moved the entire wedding up to Berkeley. Frank called Kaitlin in the middle of the ceremony to proclaim his love for Julie. Julie chose not to marry Bullit, but not to go back to Frank either. Taylor and Ryan realized they still loved each other and got back together. Summer realized she still had a passion for helping animals and the environment and left to pursue that. Seth went to Rhode Island on his own. Sandy and Kirsten (and Sophie) moved back to Berkeley and Ryan went with them.

Another 'future event' shown was Ryan working as an architect. The scene showed him leaving a business, about to get in his fancy car when he saw a troubled looking kid sitting by the side of the road and asked him if he needed help - directly mirroring how Sandy got Ryan off the streets of Chino years before.
