Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this mystery series, the viewer was shown the murder at the very beginning of each episode. The challenge was trying to spot where the killer tripped up, because he or she was always caught by this apparently disorganized police lieutenant. He followed the clues with the tenacity of a bloodhound, often using his disarming "just one more question" approach. Which amazing series was this?

Answer: Columbo

Peter Falk appeared as the disheveled but brilliant Columbo throughout the series' run. He became so identified with the role that it was impossible to imagine anyone else ever donning the rumpled raincoat. Between 1971 and 1978 "Columbo" ran as part of NBC's "Sunday Mystery Movie" series, along with three other shows. Generally ninety minutes in length, including commercials, "Columbo" would therefore be seen only once a month, and featured different writers, directors and a bevy of guest stars.

The first regular episode (excluding the two pilots) was written by Stephen Bochco and directed by a young Steven Spielberg. The show was so popular that the show survived beyond the "Sunday Mystery Movie", in various formats.
2. Running for eight seasons in the 80s, this action show told us the story of a former Navy Seal turned private investigator. Living on the Hawaiian estate of a never seen writer, our handsome investigator had his host's full resources at his disposal...if he could trick them out of the estate's major domo. What series was this?

Answer: Magnum P.I.

Tom Selleck certainly looked good swimming in the tidal pool on the estate and driving around in Robin Master's Ferrari. In between times, he actually managed to solve a number of interesting cases, frequently using the assistance of his Vietnam buddies to do so. Most of the series' lighter moments came from the tension between Magnum and Higgins (played by John Hillerman), the major domo of the estate, who definitely did not approve of Magnum.
3. This show followed the crazy antics of four young musicians, living in a beach house and trying to make a living with their music, while one of their number fell in love with predictable regularity. The music featured on the show was written by some of the best musicians of the time, and many of the songs became hits on the radio.

Answer: The Monkees

Inspired by the Beatles film, "A Hard Day's Night", The Monkees were a created group, brought together, through auditions, for the show. Initially only two of the band members had any rock music experience, but the boys soon became famous in their own rights.

This fame more or less went to their heads, and the show only lasted for two seasons from 1966 to 1968, as they demanded more and more creative control.
4. Set in the Korean War, this medical comedy managed to make us laugh at the idiosyncrasies of characters, while leaving no doubt about the horrors of war. Which amazing series was this?

Answer: M*A*S*H

This spin off from the 1970 movie of the same name ran for an incredible 11 seasons, from 1972 to 1983, which was much longer than the war that it was set in actually lasted. It followed the trials and tribulations of the people living and working in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War.

Despite a number of changes over the years, the cast remained strong, with each new character adding new dimensions to the inter-personal dynamics. In my opinion, each new addition was an improvement over the character he replaced.
5. Created by Stephen Bochco and Michael Kozoll, this police drama was set in a high crime district, where street gangs fought it out for turf and the shooting of a police officer was not all that uncommon. The captain of the precinct had his hands full running a tight ship, dealing with an emotional ex-wife and keeping his affair with the sexy public defender under wraps. What exciting drama was this?

Answer: Hill Street Blues

"Hill Street Blues" ran for seven seasons, beginning in 1981. The reality of life in a tough, inner-city precinct was examined, along with the personal affairs of the people who dealt with that kind of stress on a daily basis. The cast remained fairly consistent, allowing the writers to explore their growth and development over the years.
6. This medical drama was one of the first to focus on the investigation of forensic techniques to solve the crime. The strong-willed protagonist was a Medical Examiner who often noticed details that made the deaths he examined seem suspicious. He usually butted heads with both his boss and the police in following those leads and solving the homicide. What was the name of this enjoyable and informative show?

Answer: Quincy M.E.

"Quincy" started out in 1976 as one of NBC's "Sunday Mystery Movies"; a series of four different 90 minute mini-movies, each being shown once a month. "Quincy" was so popular that it changed its format to a 60 minute weekly show in its second season and ran for eight seasons in total.
Jack Klugman was convincing in the role, doing battle with both bureaucracy and bad guys, while trying to solve crimes through scientific observation, with an occasional hunch thrown in for good measure.
7. This entertaining series chronicled the cases of an ex-con trying to make a living as a private investigator, while doing his best to not step over certain boundaries that would get him sent to jail again. He ran his business out of the trailer that he lived in, and was occasionally assisted in his efforts by his dad, Rocky. What series, with arguably the most readily identifiable theme song ever, was this?

Answer: The Rockford Files

James Garner was Jim Rockford, in the series that ran from 1974 to 1980. With his former convict status making it illegal for him to carry a gun, Rockford had to use his wits to get out of a lot of sticky situations. The only downfall with the show was its obsession with cars, causing it to spend far too much time on unexciting chase scenes, or long tailing scenes that weren't even as exciting as chases.
8. This comedy about the regulars at a Boston sports bar ran for a terrific 11 years. Most of the show's episodes occurred in the bar, presided over by its owner, who was a former sports legend and, ironically enough, a recovering alcoholic. Which sitcom do I refer to?

Answer: Cheers

This was another series that managed to hang onto a surprisingly large number of its original cast, which was one of the secrets behind its success. Shelley Long's character, Diane Chambers, only made sporadic appearances after season five, being replaced by Kirstie Alley in the character of Rebecca Howe. Nicholas Colasanto, who played Coach, passed away part way through season four, and his character was replaced by Woody, played by Woody Harrelson.
9. This pair of dissimilar brothers tried to make their living running a private investigations firm, much to the chagrin of their mother who would rather have seen them actually successful at something. However they managed to eke out a living, scooting into Mexico with some degree of regularity, to check with their contacts there, and doing what was right...most of the time. What show have I just described?

Answer: Simon and Simon

Gerald McRaney and Jameson Parker were Rick and A.J. Simon (respectively) for eight seasons, starting in 1981. Rick favoured a more relaxed approach and was usually seen in a cowboy hat and boots and jeans. A.J. was more dapper in his suits and ties, but together they got the job done.
10. This medical drama focused on the trials and tribulations facing the staff (especially the interns) of St. Eligius, a teaching hospital in Boston that was viewed by the city as being second rate. Which Emmy-award winning drama was this?

Answer: St. Elsewhere

Beginning in 1982, "St. Elsewhere" ran for six seasons. The show tackled a number of serious issues and provided a start for many fine actors, including David Morse, Denzel Washington, and Ed Begley Jr.
