Arthur is so infatuated with his father that the old man easily fools his son into absconding with family funds to invest with the elder crook. The younger Shelby is crushed and disheartened when his dad fails to meet him at an assigned place, and even more when he catches his father trying to slip out of town by train.

In an on-going attempt to curry favor with Campbell, Thomas offers the Inspector the chance to recover the stolen guns and capture two highly sought IRA terrorists. Thomas mentions that the Inspector will get a medal, which Campbell promisesto wear on his backside.

Thomas knows that the IRA men will kill him as soon as he discloses the location of the guns, so he tries to coordinate the police arrest of the terrorists while Grace comes out of the next room with a pistol. Instead of pointing a gun at the IRA men, Grace immediately shoots one, forcing Thomas to fight and kill the other with blows to his head with a spittoon.

The police arrive late and dispose of the bodies saying "nothing happened here".

After having now killed two IRA men, Grace tells Campbell that the desire to avenge her father's death has left her. Campbell is quick to see that Grace is falling for Thomas who recently asked her to help him with everything in his life.

It is very apparent that Campbell has special feelings for Grace, however, when she refuses his marriage proposal he immediately assumes that Grace has fallen in love with Thomas. Despite giving his word to Grace, Campbell in an obvious fit of jealous rage, calls out all police to hunt down Thomas.

He rescinds this order when he is informed that Thomas is hiding out with Grace. He later observes the couple together at Grace's apartment in a romantic embrace.

Arthur is very distraught about his own father swindling him out of a large sum of Shelby family money so he hangs himself with his belt which fortunately for him breaks. When Thomas later meets with Arthur and teases him about using a gun, he embraces his brother and gives him a business card with Arthur's name as a full partner.
