Campbell makes it perfectly clear that he expects Grace to go to any length to get close to Thomas and learn the location of the stolen guns. Grace warns the inspector not to underestimate her. Later, when Grace and Thomas are alone at the pub, Thomas advises Grace that her original background story does not check out.

He presumes that she is from a fine family and got pregnant out of wedlock and was thus banished to the role of a slum barmaid. On her request, Thomas promises to keep Grace's secret.
