Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Princess Tutu" has a distinctive opening line: "Once upon a time, _______"?

Answer: "There was a man who died."

The "man who died" is Drosselmeyer, the author of the story "The Prince and the Raven." He dies before completing it, but the story comes to life and he watches from some sort of parallel vortex to make sure the story ends in the tragic manner he always hoped for.

The narrator speaks at the beginning of each episode, offering deconstructions or subversions of fairy tales or ballets that will relate to the action of the episode.
2. What fate does Mr. Cat constantly threaten when students (particularly Duck) mess up?

Answer: Marriage to him

Every time he mentions marriage, he begins to glow as Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" plays. The couple of times when he does have an interested lady, he doesn't want to marry her.
3. Complete the quotation: "May those who accept their fate be granted happiness; may those who defy it be granted..." what?

Answer: glory

There's a lot of fate-defying going on. Princess Tutu does not want to turn into a speck of light, Fakir does not want to die, and so on.
4. Along with hope, love, and adventure, what interesting gem does Miss Edel offer?

Answer: Author's bypass

Called "author's convenience" in the subtitles for the Japanese dub. Presumably this stone is the ability of an author to get past a plot hole or suspend disbelief.
5. To protect Mytho, Rue tries to perform a piece from which ballet in which a girl dances herself to death?

Answer: Giselle

She can't do it, so Duck turns into Princess Tutu and takes over. Instead of violence, Tutu always uses dance to solve problems and heal others' spirits. In "Giselle," the title character dies when she finds out that the man she loves is betrothed to another and doesn't mean to marry her.
6. When Mytho regains the emotion of fear, what is the first thing he says scares him?

Answer: Princess Tutu

Since Tutu has been restoring his emotions to him and most of them are less than pleasant (loneliness, sorrow, etc.), it's no wonder that he would begin to fear her and what harsh feelings she keeps giving him. This is sad for Duck, who only wants to see him smile. Thinking about it, the line "I'm scared of Princess Tutu" sounds very bizarre out of context.
7. Having made Mytho sad by returning his heart, Duck throws away her pendant. Why does she take it up again?

Answer: She wants to save Mytho from drowning.

Mytho follows a heart shard into the water, and Duck can save him only as Tutu. Whenever she touches the water while wearing the pendant, she turns from a duck into a girl.
8. The show is divided into two arcs: the Egg Chapter (the first thirteen episodes) and the Fledgling Chapter (the last thirteen). Where does the climax of the Egg Chapter take place?

Answer: An underground lake

This is a nod to the ballet "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky. Music from this ballet, as well as "Cinderella" and "Lohengrin," play over the action. The show also uses music from "The Nutcracker," "Sleeping Beauty," "La Sylphide," "Coppelia," "Carmen," and works by Strauss, Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Saint-Saens, and others.
9. Tutu tells Mytho of her love for him through dance. What will happen if she vocally tells him?

Answer: Tutu will turn into a speck of light.

Yet her dancing touches him, and he chooses her over Kraehe. While episode thirteen ends with the possibility that they will stay together, we see very quickly that things become even more complicated.
10. Which heart shard does Rue soak in raven's blood?

Answer: Love

Again we see the downside of getting one's personality back. His sense of love is warped, which makes him cut up Mr. Cat's prized pair of ballet shoes.
11. Mytho and Rue try to take the hearts of many girls. Who is the only boy whose heart they try to steal?

Answer: Femio

Femio loves being dramatic: he enters amid rose petals that a man waves in front of him while music from "Carmen" plays. Siegfried is Mytho's real name, and also the name of the prince from "Swan Lake". While normally Mytho is out for hearts, this time Rue tries it; unfortunately for her, Femio is incapable of loving just one woman and can't give her his heart.
12. Is Rue really a crow?

Answer: no

The Raven claims that his ugly daughter is really a crow, but he actually stole her as a baby to be his daughter. He named her Kraehe, which is German for "crow". Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" plays in its entirety during the end of episode 24 when the Raven is released.
13. Where is the final heart shard?

Answer: Duck's pendant

In order for Mytho to regain his heart, Duck must give up her ability to become a girl and Princess Tutu, but when she becomes a duck again, she can still dance.
14. How does Fakir help Duck in the final battle?

Answer: He writes the ideal ending.

The characters don't want the tragic endings Drosselmeyer desires. Fakir, Drosselmeyer's descendant, has the power to make stories come alive and helps Duck write the happy ending she wants.
15. What is Duck doing at the very end of the show?

Answer: Swimming in a pond near Fakir

In the end, "Duck is still a duck," and seems content to live her life as what she is. Luckily, Fakir accepts her too and looks like he'll spend plenty of time with her.
