Answer: Ran Shuuei

Ran Shuuei is the fourth son of the Ran family, one of the most prestigious families in Saiunkoku. His older brothers are triplets collectively known as Ran Setsuna and apart from his sister-in-law (whom he was once in love with), he is the only one who can tell them apart. In the second season, he is torn between his family name and his loyalty to the Emperor, whom he has grown to like but in the end, swears an oath of total fidelity to the Emperor.

2. I work at the Civil Service Ministry and am also one of the Emperor's closest friends. I was adopted by the Kou family and was even offered the position of future head of the family, though I have to marry Shuurei first (like I could ever do that). I often get lost, although it's not my fault, of course. Who am I?

Answer: Ri Kouyuu

Ri Kouyuu is an adopted son of the Kou family and Vice Minister of Civil Affairs. He is considered one of the smartest young men in the Imperial Court and is, therefore, an adviser to the Emperor. He is also portrayed as someone who likes men which is why the idea of marrying Shuurei appalls him at first.

3. I'm hopelessly in love with a girl who's always busy trying to make a difference in other people's lives. My brothers used to bully me when I was a kid so I was lonely for a long time, although there was one who took good care of me before he was taken away. Answer: Shi Ryuuki

Shi Ryuuki is the current Emperor of Saiunkoku. At first, he does not take his duties seriously but realizes he has to do a better job after meeting and falling in love with Shuurei. Oftentimes, he is torn between being himself and being the Emperor but after going to Kyuusai Cove, he becomes even more determined to be a successful Emperor.

He is very much in love with Shuurei, saying that he wants to marry her alone even if he has to wait.

Answer: Si Seiran

Si Seiran used to be a prince of Saiunkoku known as Seien but was exiled after his maternal relatives plotted and failed to seize the throne. He later joined a band of thieves after which Kou Shouka took him into his home. It is implied that he loves Shuurei although he never admits it.

5. I am the leader of the 'Wolves of the Wind', although that's just between you and me. I have an independent daughter who looks just like her mother, a woman who I was supposed to kill but ended up falling in love with. I make a good batch of tea...or so I think. Who am I?

Answer: Kou Shouka

Kou Shouka works at the Royal Archives and is the father of Shuurei. Unknown to many, he is a former assassin known as 'The Black Wolf' who ended up marrying the 'Rose Princess' whom he was supposed to kill.

Answer: Rou Ensei

Like Seiran, Rou Ensei once belonged to a band of thieves but became the temporary governor of Sa Province at a time when the province was in a state of chaos. In the second season, Seiran lends him his sword as a sign that he is entrusting him with the duty of protecting Shuurei. Ensei carries the sword with him although he goes on to use his staff, his weapon of expertise.

7. I used to be the governor of Sa Province but I was demoted. Still, I am happy, especially now that I know I can live to a ripe old age and be with the girl I love. She's quite possessive and won't have it any other way. Who am I?

Answer: To Eigetsu

To Eigetsu was appointed the governor of Sa Province along with Shuurei after topping the national exams but was demoted after acting rashly during the time of the plague. He shares the same body as Yougetsu, a spirit who extended his life twice - once when he was a child and the second time just after he was rescued from a cult.

Answer: Shin Suou

Shin Suou is a character who appears only in the second season. Like his father, he is easily fooled and swindled although he is not as stupid as many people are led to believe. He first meets Shuurei when proposing to her and they end up becoming good friends. Later on, he accompanies her to Kyuusai Cove to help bring back the Emperor.

Answer: Ran Ryuuren

Ran Ryuuren is the youngest of the Ran brothers. He is often shown wearing colorful clothes and playing the flute, drawing attention to himself wherever he goes. In spite of his eccentricity, though, he is a loyal friend who helps his bosom friends Shuurei and Eigetsu in times of need.

Answer: Tei Yuushun

Tei Yuushun used to be one of the advisers in Sa Province but after Shuurei and Eigetsu were stripped of their post as governors, he goes to Kiyou with Shuurei. There, he accepts the post of Prime Minister and becomes the Emperor's shield. As a result, he receives many death threats and demands for his resignation but he does not mind them. He is married to Sai Rin who is connected with the Merchants' Guild.

11. Like many others at the Imperial Court, I think that the Emperor is a brat who doesn't deserve the throne. I am extremely fond of my niece even if she doesn't know I am her uncle. Answer: Kou Reishin

Kou Reishin is the head of the Kou family and younger brother of Shouka, which makes him Shuurei's uncle. He is also an important governor official and Kouyuu's superior, as well as his adoptive father. He likes Shuurei a lot and does his best to help her but always hides from her.

12. I was originally intended to be the Emperor's bride but I know he is in love with someone else. In fact, I look very similar to the woman he loves. I, too, used to be in love with someone. He was my brother's best friend but he left us both. Who am I?

Answer: Ran Jyuusan

Ran Jyuusan is considered the princess of the Ran family. Many, including Shuurei, were led to believe that she would end up as the Emperor's betrothed. Instead, she replaces Shusui as the head of the Imperial Residence. She was once engaged to Shiba Jin but he ended up killing his father and leaving her. Still, she goes on loving him and only decides to forget him after meeting him again at Kyuusai Cove.

13. I tried to poison Shuurei once but that's all behind us now. These days, I am busy taking care of Eigetsu whenever I can pry him away from that annoying man with the colored feathers. Who am I?

Answer: Kourin

In the first season, Kourin is shown as Shuurei's lady-in-waiting but is sent back to Sa Province after attempting to kill her on the orders of her master and adoptive father, Sa Enjun. When Shuurei and Eigetsu become governors of Sa Province, she goes to stay with them, during which she falls in love with Eigetsu.

In the second season, however, it is revealed that she is from the Hyou clan and is under Ruka's spell. Because of this, she leaves the Imperial Residence and goes to Kyuusai Cove. Ran Shuuei, who has fallen in love with her, tries to bring her back but she jumps out of the boat at the last minute.

Kou Shuurei is the principal female character of "Saiunkoku Monogatari". She is the daughter of Shouka and Shokun. When she was little, she was sickly but miraculously became healthy after her mother's death. She is shown as a shrewd, independent girl who is determined to get what she wants and who thinks of everyone else first before herself.

These qualities attract Ryuuki, whom she first meets while at the Imperial Residence. Although she never openly admits her feelings for Ryuuki, it is hinted that she feels the same way and even cries in the second season (supposedly out of jealousy) after overhearing an intimate conversation between Ryuuki and Jyuusan.

She serves as the governor of Sa Province for a time but is stripped of her post after not following government procedures.

She ends up working at the Ministry of Justice as an inspector.
