Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My favourite Saturday morning show was "TISWAS" shown on the ITV network. What did "TISWAS" mean?

Answer: Today Is Saturday, Watch And Smile

This popular children's program ran from the 5th of January 1974 until the 3rd of April 1982.

The word tiswas was used by my mother for being in 'a state of confusion' or 'a rush' often you could hear her say - "I'm all in a tiswas".
2. One of the things I liked about "TISWAS" was the unpredictability of the programme. Every now and then a dark figure, dressed in black appeared carrying custard pies which he proceeded to throw at anyone or everyone. Who was this?

Answer: The Phantom Flan Flinger

There were many theories as to the identity of the Phantom Flan Flinger with, among others, Jim Davidson claiming the credit. Whilst the name has never been officially revealed the original PFF is believed to be a cab driver from Solihull (don't ask me how he got the job).
3. The biggest rival to "TISWAS" showed on the BBC, what was the name of this programme, hosted by Noel Edmonds?

Answer: Multi coloured Swap Shop

A programme where children could swap items with each other in 'The Swaparama'. Keith Chegwin usually presented this outside event swapping items live on air.
4. Which two members of "Swap Shop" married each other after meeting on the programme?

Answer: Keith Chegwin and Maggie Philbin

Maggie Philbin joined the show in 1978 where she met Keith Chegwin. They married in 1982 and divorced in 1993.
Emma Forbes appeared as a guest on the show but never had a regular slot.
5. On "Swap Shop" there was a stuffed toy mascot, what was the name of this toy?

Answer: Posh Paws

The name Posh Paws is an anagram of "Swap Shop".
Dino was the pet 'dog' in the Flintstones.
Ed the Duck appeared in the 'Broom Cupboard', A BBC link between programmes, with Andi Peters and Andy Crane in the 1980s.
Roland Rat (Superstar) appeared on TV-AM a British breakfast programme.
6. One thing about Saturday mornings were the cartoons, I recall one which featured a number of people trying to catch a pigeon. I can't remember the name of the group though. What was it?

Answer: Vulture Squadron

Featuring Dick Darstardly, Muttley, Clunk and Zilly in their flying machines.
7. In "Stop The Pigeon" what was the name of the pigeon?

Answer: Yankee Doodle Pigeon

I never knew why Yankee Doodle Pigeon always played his bugle to let Dick Dastardly know he was coming.
8. In the "Stop the Pigeon" cartoon, who was responsible for inventing all of the weapons / strategies?

Answer: Clunk

Clunk created all of the strange flying machines. His explanations of how they worked were punctuated by numerous 'clicks' and 'whistles' leading Dick Darstardly to utter his catchphrase - "Wazzee say, Wazzee say?" at which point Zilly would translate.
9. Another favourite cartoon was "Deputy Dawg", but which two characters were always trying to get into the hen-house?

Answer: Musky and Vince

Musky was a muskrat. Vince's full name was 'Vincent van Gopher.
Some other characters who appeared in the show were:
Moley Mole, Pig Newton and The Sheriff.
Musky and Vince were the main offenders. If they weren't trying to raid the hen-house they were in Deputy Dawg's water melon patch.
10. When they weren't in his hen house or trying to raid the water melon patch the three main characters in "Deputy Dawg" were normally to be found doing what?

Answer: Fishing for catfish

They were the best of pals when Deputy Dawg did not have his 'official duties' to perform.
