When Dr. Cox laughed Elliot looked behind her to see why Dr. Cox was laughing. The audience can reasonably assume that Elliot saw Ben because Ben's death had not yet been revealed. After Ben's funeral is known, the audience can look back at this scene as an example of how Dr. Cox was close to Ben (e.g., enjoying Ben's companionship after Ben had already died).
