"Seinfeld" and the New York Yankees Quiz

I know it has been many years since the final episode aired but I still love watching "Seinfeld" via the re-runs. I am also a huge Yankees fan so I thought it might be fun to merge the two into a quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did George Costanza get his position with the Yankees?

Answer: He met a girl whose uncle worked for the team.

George's life seemed to be tanking because every instinct he had ever had was wrong. So he decided to do 'the opposite' and that's how he met Victoria, the young lady whose uncle worked for the Yankees. George by chance just happened to order the same exact lunch as her at Monk's and when he noticed her looking his way, approached her.

She had overheard what he ordered and that's why she was staring. She introduced herself, George stated that he had no job and lived with his parents and she ended up getting him an interview with the team.

The rest is Pinstripe history!
2. Which Yankee did George get to appear on the PBS telethon fundraiser?

Answer: Danny Tartabull

Danny Tartabull did appear on the episode but unfortunately neither he nor George appeared on the PBS telethon. They went on a high-speed chase because George thought the driver of another car cut them off then flipped them the bird.
3. George was asked by Mr. Wilhelm to entertain some executives from another major league team to discuss inter-league play. Which team was it?

Answer: Houston Astros

George seemed to fit right in with the three gents from Houston. They smoked cigars, drank and called each other SOBs all in good fun. Houston was at that time in the National League.
4. Why was Elaine once kicked out of a Yankees game as an invited guest of a friend of one of the owner's?

Answer: She was wearing an Orioles cap and refused to take it off when asked to.

Elaine was an Orioles fan, having lived in the Baltimore suburb of Towson. When a friend of the owner suggested she remove her hat she thought he was kidding. He wasn't and soon a ruckus ensued and she was asked to leave the stadium.
5. What change in the Yankees uniforms did George propose to the team?

Answer: That they be made from 100% cotton - because it's a natural fiber.

The Yanks did listen and took George up on his suggestion because it sounded feasible. It wasn't, because cotton shrinks when washed and tight fitting uniforms restrict movement. It also rips easily!
6. When George's car was found in the Yankees parking lot it appeared to have been there for quite a while. There was also a blood stain found in the car & the worst was feared. After being convinced George was dead, Mr. Steinbrenner went to the Costanza home to break the news to Frank and Estelle. What did Frank say to "The Boss" when informed of the tragedy?

Answer: "Why the heck did you trade Jay Buhner?"

Frank wasn't too upset by the news about George. George however was not dead - he had left his car in the parking lot to make it appear he was the first one to arrive and the last to leave each day. He didn't count on the menu flyers from nearby places to eat being left on all the unattended windshields.

He also didn't count on the pigeons. So Jerry took the car to get it washed and crashed it, causing the blood stain.
7. Which former Yankee did Kramer claim he punched while attending a Yankees fantasy camp?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Kramer also claimed to spot Joe Dimaggio at a nearby coffee shop dunking his donut. "Mr. Coffee" in a coffee shop? He (and George) also thought they saw Saddam Hussein in NYC!
8. Who was the manager of the Yankees that appeared on "Seinfeld"?

Answer: Buck Showalter

Showalter was skipper from 1992 - 1995. He was a smart baseball mind and was good at relating to his players. He was also the manager that George approached about the uniform change idea. Being a diehard Yankees fan, I would have loved to see him stay on as skipper.
9. After the Yanks won the 1996 World Series, George was talking to two players during a batting practice giving unwanted advice about hitting. The players responded that their hitting was fine and that they just won the World Series. George scoffs and says "In six games!" Who were the two Yankee players?

Answer: Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter

All of the players listed were on that '96 World Series team along with Jimmy Key, David Cone, Paul O'Neill, series MVP John Wetteland, Andy Pettitte and a very young Mariano Rivera. And Joe Torre of course was the manager of that team. It was a dramatic series with the New Yorkers losing the first two games at Yankee Stadium. With their backs to the wall and heading to Atlanta the Yankees won all 3 games at Fulton County Stadium and then closed the series out back home thanks to Jimmy Leyritz.

It was their first WS victory since 1978.
10. Which Yankee did Kramer try and convince to hit two home runs in a game in order to get back some Yankee team memorabilia from a little boy in the hospital?

Answer: Paul O'Neill

The birthday card was for "The Boss" and all the Yankee players signed it. George inadvertently gave Kramer the okay to sell the card to a sports memorabilia store who in turn sold the card to the sick little boy, Bobby. Costanza then had to get Kramer to get the card back and Kramer had to promise to get Bobby's favorite player, Paul O'Neill, to hit two homers for him in exchange for the card. O'Neill hit the first home run and in his last at bat had what appeared to be an inside-the-park homer.

The official scorer however ruled the hit as a triple with an error.
