Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anderson is part of a club dedicated to what Sherlock-inspired activity?

Answer: Coming up with theories about how Sherlock Holmes faked his death.

Lestrade thinks he's wasting his time and theorizes because Anderson's actions in part led to Sherlock jumping off the roof. Sherlock eventually tells Anderson how he did it; Anderson says he's disappointed. The show's writers nicely pay homage to fan theories and reactions by presenting alternate theories and having Anderson disappointed in how Sherlock survived. On the DVDs, the writers mention bizarre fan theories about his survival, which include a flying suit, anti-gravity boots, Pegasus, and the TARDIS from "Doctor Who."
2. What is John's reaction to seeing Sherlock alive again in the restaurant?

Answer: He attacks Sherlock.

John is reasonably angry that Sherlock never gave him a hint that he was alive and leaving him to grieve the loss of his best friend for two years. John's girlfriend Mary is there and is understanding about the whole situation as they talk and fight in gradually less elegant restaurants.
3. How does Sherlock diffuse the bomb under Parliament?

Answer: He turns it off.

He laughs and tells John that terrorists always put an on/off switch on their bombs. He knew it but didn't tell John so that they could get all their feelings out. John isn't very happy with Sherlock in this episode.
4. What does Sherlock describe as "Two people who currently live together are about to attend church, have a party, go on a short holiday, then carry on living together"?

Answer: Marriage

He tells Mrs. Hudson this before the wedding. He carries on with his dismal views while giving his speech at the reception, then admits that he is rude and ignorant and can't understand most of the wonderful things that everybody else does.
5. How do Sherlock and John celebrate John's stag night?

Answer: They have a drink on every street where they've found a corpse.

Molly calculates how much they can drink at each bar and not get drunk. They get drunk anyway, and when a client comes with a case, Sherlock can't do his deductions. However, he gets a clue from the client that he uses to solve the Mayfly Man case at the wedding.
6. In "The Sign of Three," why does the Mayfly Man attack Bainbridge, the guard?

Answer: As a test for his real victim, Sholto.

Mayfly Man Jonathan Small stabs them with a thin blade through their belts, relying on the pressure the belt puts on the body to keep the wound closed until he's long gone and not a suspect. Later when they take off their belts, the blood starts flowing. As Sholto is such a recluse, Small wants to test his perfect crime to make sure it works, since he only has one chance to kill Sholto. In the novel "The Sign of Four," Small wants vengeance on Sholto for stealing treasure from him.

This method is similar to how Empress Elisabeth of Austria died. She was stabbed with a thin file in her chest; it was some time before she fainted because of the corset and tight clothes she wore. Unlike the two men in this series, she died shortly thereafter.
7. Why is Sherlock not surprised that John married a woman who turns out to have been an assassin?

Answer: John is attracted to dangerous people and situations.

Ever since the first episode, John has shown a desire to be in thrilling, dangerous adventures. It makes sense to Sherlock that the people closest to him also get involved in danger frequently. We never find out Mary's real name, only her initials: A.G.RA.

This is another reference to "The Sign of Four." In this book, Watson becomes engaged to Mary Morstan, who gets jewels from Agra Treasure.
8. How does Sherlock get Janine to let him into Magnussen's office?

Answer: He proposes to her.

Sherlock declares his complete lack of interest in romance and sex in the first episode of the series, so his romance with Janine comes as a surprise at first. Of course, he's only manipulating people to get what he needs. Janine is not as angry with Sherlock as she could be--she sells her story to the tabloids, so at least she got something out of the relationship.
9. What does Mycroft tell Sherlock at Christmas?

Answer: He would be heartbroken if Sherlock died.

While their relationship if very rocky and antagonistic, Mycroft is looking out for his brother. He tells Sherlock to decline a job offer before even hearing it because the job would essentially require Sherlock's death in several months' time. Mycroft is played by one of the show's writers, Mark Gatiss.
10. Who asks Britain "Did you miss me?" at the end of the season?

Answer: Moriarty

Moriarty shoots himself at the end of season two, and apparently dies. But, if Sherlock can effectively fake his death, why not Moriarty? We'll have to wait for another season! Moriarty also appears in the the dream sequence Sherlock has after he has been shot and in a seconds-long post-credits scene.
