Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What race was Spartacus?

Answer: Thracian

The Thracians were mostly tall people with dark to red hair. From the Thracian history many Thracian heroes were known to have had red hair.

In "Spartacus: Blood and Sand", the Thracians were shown to be fierce warriors but also wild and uncontrollable. It was shown that they were rare slaves to be found in the Roman Republic.
2. On what terms did the Maedi Thracians agreed to join the Roman Auxiliary?

Answer: Annihilation of all the Getae

The Maedi were tired of the Getae always raiding their villages, raping their women and killing their children. So, they wanted to get rid of them once and for all. Whit the Republic on their side, the chances of succeeding were high.

Both the Maedi (Spartacus' Tribe) and Getae were Thracian Tribes. In the show, the Getae were described as barbarians, but in reality they were as cultured as the Maedi.
3. What was Sura's, Spartacus' wife, "profession"?

Answer: Prophetess

Sura was a prophetess for the gods. She was able see the future in her dreams - example: when she first met Spatacus, she knew that he will never love no other woman than her, which was true.

The name Sura is short for Suratralis, which is also a Thracian name meaning strong or brave.
4. Where did Legatus Gaius Claudius Glaber decided to march with his troops and the Roman Auxiliary?

Answer: East, towards Mithridates and the Greeks

The Legatus was supposed to protect the northern borders of Thrace, with the help of the Thracians. But instead, he decided that he would face Mithridates and his Greek troops. He thought, if he was the one to defeat him, he would become very popular in Rome.

On this decision, the Maedi Thracians were not very satisfied, because it would have turned them away from their villages, which would have been exposed on attacks from the Getae.
5. After the Maedi Thracians defied the Legatus' orders to march in the direction he desired to, they forcefully abandoned the Roman Auxiliary. But not much time passed after each of them was found and imprisoned, with the purpose to be killed in the Gladiator games of Capua. Across which sea they were transported to get to Capua?

Answer: The Adriatic Sea

Spartacus was transported from Thrace to Capua, meaning he was moved to the west. In between, there is only one sea, the Adriatic sea. The Black sea it's just east of Thrace, the Aegean on the south and the Ionic sea towards south-west.

The region of what was once known as Thrace today is Bulgaria.
6. How many gladiators each of the both Lanistas, Batiatus and Solonius, presented for Albinius' games?

Answer: Batiatus (Two)/Solonius (Six)

Quintus Lentulus Batiatus presented Crixus, the Undefeated Gaul, and Barca, the Beast of Carthage, while Marcus Decius Solonius presented Arkadios, the Scourge of Athens, Sevelles, the Terror of the Red Sands, Gron, the Man of Thousand Deaths, Vastus, born of the Dark, Mysterious Lands, Veronus, the Slayer of Fools, Sinatrus, the Eater of Children, the Destroyer of Dreams.

PS: From Solonius' men, with the exception of Arkadios, I'm not too sure of the other five gladiator's names and nicknames, because it was kinda hard to hear them in the background. . . sorry. . .
7. After the presentation of the gladiators, Legatus Gaius Claudius Glaber came forth with Thracian slaves. How many slaves were there, counting Spartacus too?

Answer: Six

A Legatus was a Roman general-like officer and a commander of their own Legion (formed out of around 5,400 soldiers). Legatus comes from the Latin word legare, which means "to represent".
8. How many of Solonius' gladiators did Spartacus faced in the Arena, as his death sentence?

Answer: Four

Four, of which one was Arkadios, the Scourge of Athens, who was hailed as one of Solonius' best gladiators.
9. After getting brutally beaten by Solonius' gladiators, Spartacus will be reminded of Sura's dream, by seeing a red serpent on Arkadios' shield. Which words spoken by his wife crossed his mind at that moment, that will give him the strength to continue fighting?

Answer: "Kill them all."

Her dream was about Spartacus being on his knees before a red serpent, as his life was fading away, which was a warning that if he goes to war he would be destined for great and unfortunate things.

"Kill them all" - were Sura's last words to Spartacus, before he left with the Roman Auxiliary.
10. As you may know, "Spartacus" was not really Spatacus' name. During his death sentence, for abandoning the Roman Auxiliary, he killed Solonius' gladiators in the Arena and reminded Batiatus of a certain someone buy the way he fought, by which he was named after. Was that certain someone an old Thracian gladiator?

Answer: No

In the series it wasn't cleared, but most likely they named him after Sparatocos, son of Teres I, who ruled with the Odrysian Kingdom from 450 to 431 BCE.

Sparatocos had a habit of fighting like an animal, taking on multiple enemies at one time and other crazy methods - the reason why Spartacus was named after him.
