Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the episode, Spartacus had a dream where his wife Sura was killed by whom?

Answer: None of these

As he was chained to a table, in Batiatus' Ludus, Spartacus was dreaming of making love to his wife, when suddenly Sura's body burst into blood, without any explanation.
2. On what deed did Lucretia blamed Quintus for their decreasing funds?

Answer: Overpaying for Spartacus

Lucretia feared that Spartacus will not last long in the Arena, as a Gladiator, and will fall without earning them any money, thus corrupting their investment. But, Batiatus believed that he paid his worth, and that they will profit out of him.
3. How was Batiatus informed of Legatus Glaber's wish to visit his Ludus?

Answer: By a letter

Ludus was a training school for Gladiators and also their prison, because as slaves, they were not allowed to leave it, except for the games in the Arena or being sold to another master. . . or the most extreme reason, death. Also, there were very rare occasions where a Gladiator was given freedom.

The one who owned and was in charge of the Ludus was known as a Lanista.
4. Counting Spartacus too, how many new recruits were there at Batiatus' Ludus?

Answer: Six

Six, including Spartacus, Varro, Kerza, Marcus and two other unnamed recruits. Only three became Gladiators for certain (Spartacus, Varro and Kerza). It's unknown if the other unnamed recruits survived the test or not.
5. To Oenomaus' question for the recruits: "What is beneath your feet?" - what was the right answer?

Answer: "Sacred ground. Watered with the tears of blood."

Every time, when new recruits stepped for the first time on the training field of the Ludus, Oenomaus had the habit of asking them this question. All of them, of course, answered it wrong by just simply saying "sand".

When the wrong answer was given, Oenomaus would have had asked the Champion of the House the same question and received the right answer.
6. How did Varo ended up in Batiatus' Ludus?

Answer: He volunteered himself

Varro was a Roman citizen who volunteered to become a Gladiator, to earn money in the Arena, and pay off his gambling debts. Also, he needed money to support his wife and son.
7. For what did Batiatus owed money to Ovidius, that he personally came to collect?

Answer: Grain

Ovidius was a Roman merchant who supplied Batiatus with grain. Quintus has not paid him for three months of grain. They agreed to settle the matter with a little bit more of a delay, but with 30% interest return.
8. Who gave Spartacus his wife's ribbon, the one he gave it to her for safe keeping, after Legatus Glaber took it from Sura?

Answer: The Legatus himself

A purple ribbon, that Spartacus gave it to his wife Sura, before he went to war. He kept it safe and clean all the time, because it was a reminder of his wife.
9. Who built Batiatus' Ludus?

Answer: Quintus' grandfather

It is located outside of Capua, on the edge of a mountainside. The Ludus is divided into two parts:

The villa - upper part, where the Lanista and his servants live;

The cells - lower part, where the Gladiators are kept. In his part of the Ludus, there are also eating and bathing areas for the Gladiators. There is also a training ground, just outside of the cells.
10. "Sacramentum Gladiatorum" - a phrase, used by Lanistas for good fortune before the start of the games in the Arena.

Answer: False

An oath, that every man has to recite after passing a test to become a Gladiator. The oath goes like this: "I commit my flesh, my mind, my will to the glory of this ludus and the commands of my master, Batiatus. I swear to be burned, chained, beaten or die by the sword for honor in the arena."
