Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Vulcanalia, one of the biggest events, anticipated by all the citizens of Capua, is celebrated by many for ages to come and go. But what actually is the Vulcanalia?

Answer: Festival

An annual festival held on August 23rd in the honor of the god of fire, Vulcan. Also, during this festival, there were held gladiator games known as the Games of the Vulcanalia. The House of Batiatus was the only known Ludus to participate in the games, matching their own gladiators against each other.
2. For how long did Naevia serve the House of Batiatus?

Answer: Her whole life

Naevia, as some other slaves too, was born in the Ludus and served there her whole life. Her parents are unknown, but most likely they were also slaves in the House of Batiatus.
3. During a gladiator match, what was the sign for surrender called, the raising of two fingers?

Answer: Missio

The sign signifies both an acknowledgement of defeat and a plea for mercy to the editor of the games. The sign, for some gladiators, may also represent shame because they have given into the fear of death.

Poor fighters are usually not given with an opportunity to live and fight again, their plea is denied and they are executed by their opponent.
4. During the daily training, what kind of punishment did Spartacus and Varro receive for mocking Oenomaus' lesson?

Answer: They were sent to the hole

Doctore was not amused at all by Spartacus' thoughts towards his teachings, and for Varro's attempt to smooth out Spartacus' words. Oenomaus sent them immediately to the "hole", a well of muck and waste.
5. For the games of the Vulcanalia, before changes were made, against who was Spartacus supposed to fight in the first match of the day?

Answer: Varro

Spartacus and Varro were matched against each other in the very first match in the games of the Vulcanalia. Spartacus was not happy about the whole situation, because the starting matches of every games were barely profitable for any gladiator. Plus, fighting against his best friend in the Ludus was not an option.

So, he conspired to take Gnaeus' place in the prime match against Crixus, by making Gnaeus foolishly angry enough to attack Spartacus and injure him without receiving any consequences. Although Gnaeus is removed from the primus, Rabanus takes his place. At this point, Spartacus decides to attack Crixus in front of Batiatus and all his guests, at the reception for the Vulcanalia, for which Batiatus is the host at his villa.

This act excites the guests and spurs Batiatus to match Spartacus against Crixus.
6. For slaying which gladiator(s) was Crixus feared for?

Answer: Decimus and Tiberius, the Gargan Twins

It was said that the Gargan Twins' mother was a whore who was raped by a jackal. The brothers had a more beastly appearance and manners than human. They were vicious criminals in the Roman republic, that terrorized the Eastern seas until their capture.

As a punishment, they were sent in the Arena, to die in the gladiator games. Instead they prevailed in them. Eventually, they ended up under Solonius' ownership until their death.
7. What did Ashur acquire for Crixus, that was given to Naevia as a present?

Answer: Necklace

Crixus had secret feelings towards Naevia for quite a while, but both of them being slaves and having an unwanted affair with his Dominus' wife, put him in a tight situation from which he had little say.

Not being able to express his feelings through words, he gave her a necklace that he had purchased through Ashur with his own earned money.
8. Which one of the many entertainments at the House of Batiatus did Ilithyia find most amusing?

Answer: Gladiator performing intercourse

Lucretia had Varro have sex with one of the slave girls, for the entertainment of the guests, an activity that was regularly presented at the House of Batiatus. The rough and crude sex, that Ilithyia had never witnessed before, excited her to no end.
9. About which gladiator was said that: "He is no man, he is something else entirely. It's sad that he stands ten feet-tall. The very ground trembles at his feet"?

Answer: Theokoles

Theokoles, known as the Shadow of Death, was very large and famous Greek (possibly Spartan) gladiator that still is talked about with fear. Before his retirement, he was undefeated in the arena, bearing thousand scars all over his body from countless fights. Only one gladiator has ever survived a match with him... Oenomaus.
10. After Spartacus' defeat against Crixus, in the primus, he pleaded to live. Who accept his surrender?

Answer: Quintus Lentulus Batiatus

Batiatus knowing that Spartacus cost him quite a sum of money, and still had no profit from him, as the editor of the games allowed him to live. This decision displeased the magistrate, the noble guests and the crowd at the Arena.
