Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the definition of a "bottle episode" in television?

Answer: an episode that takes place entirely or almost entirely in one room, and involves a limited number of characters

Bottle episodes are usually packed with drama as well, due to everyone being confined in such a small space. "Community" and "Friends" are known for airing several bottle episodes throughout their respective initial runs. "Remedial Chaos Theory" from "Community", is one of my personal favorites.
2. Which of these episodes from the series "Breaking Bad", would fit the definition of a bottle episode?

Answer: The Fly

The entire episode of "The Fly" features Walt and Jesse in the lab, attempting to cook a batch, but constantly being distracted by a fly in the room. The episode fits the model of a bottle episode perfectly, in that it primarily uses one set, the Superlab, and only two major characters appear throughout the episode.

The episode is also paced slower than the rest, and is arguably one of the best episodes in the series.
3. "Friends" has several bottle episodes themed around which holiday?

Answer: Thanksgiving

When better to bring everyone together than Thanksgiving? There are a total of four Thanksgiving bottle episodes, "The One Where Ross Got High", in season six, and "The One with the Rumor", in season seven are two great examples of Thanksgiving bottle episodes. Another major episode that takes place "in a bottle" so to speak is the pivotal "The One the Morning After".
4. Animated television series are NOT able to create bottle episodes.

Answer: False

"Family Guy" and "Archer" are a couple of examples of animated bottle episodes. The "Family Guy" episode, "Brian and Stewie", where Brian and Stewie get stuck in a bank vault, is one of the better bottle episodes. Even "My Little Pony" features a bottle episode.
5. The "Black-ish" episode "Hope" is a very serious episode. What very sensitive subject matter does this episode tackle?

Answer: police brutality

The episode features the main cast all huddled around the television watching the news coverage of a police brutality story. They all have different opinions about the impact and how it affects their lives. The seriousness of the subject makes this different from most other bottle episodes, especially considering "Black-ish" is considered a comedy.
6. Which "Community" character mentions being in a bottle episode during a season two bottle episode?

Answer: Abed

Abed, being the TV addict of the study group, mentions this in the episode, "Cooperative Calligraphy", which in itself is a bottle episode. Annie thinks someone stole her pen and refuses to let anyone leave the room until it is found.
7. The bottle episode concept is taken to the extreme in which "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episode, that features no soundtrack or special effects?

Answer: The Body

Episode 5.16 "The Body", is about the death of Joyce, Buffy's mother. There is no soundtrack throughout the entire episode and only one vampire is seen. The episode, like many other bottle episodes, is a pivotal episode in the series.
8. Which series includes a bottle episode titled "Feeding Gary"?

Answer: Spongebob Squarepants

This bottle episode is interesting in that it features only one voice actor for both major characters in the scene. Also Mr. Krabs who appears in the episode has no speaking roles, and a lot of the scenes are recycled throughout the episode for effect.
9. Which of these is true of "The Office" bottle episode, "The Banker"?

Answer: It is also a clip-show episode

A bank representative comes to determine the company's value to a potential buyer. He asks several questions and Michael lies to him and sugar-coats everything. This is the only clip-show episode in the series.
10. "Johnny Be Gone" is a bottle episode in which series feature the Bundy Family?

Answer: Married... With Children

The entire episode is one long scene and only has main cast members. This was the season one finale. The final season also included a very similar styled bottle episode titled "The Desperate Half-Hour".
