Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the cast was first reading for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" crew spots, what part did Marina Sirtis *orignally* hope to get?

Answer: Macha Hernandez

According to the "Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion", Marina Sirtis originally auditioned for the part of Macha Hernandez, and Denise Crosby first auditioned for the role of Deanna Troi. The two were later switched, and only after Denise Crosby got the part of Hernandez was the character name changed to Tasha Yar.
2. Obviously Brent Spiner got the role of Data, but who was the first runner-up for the role (who almost got it)?

Answer: Eric Menyuk

By the way, Eric Menyuk appeared in three episodes, "Where No One Has Gone Before", "Remember Me", and "Journey's End" as The Traveler!
3. Going strictly by production and production order (not the order in which they were aired), how many episodes did Denise Crosby play a part in after "Skin of Evil"?

Answer: 7

They are "Symbiosis", "Yesterday's Enterprise", "The Mind's Eye" (Crosby did the voice of the Romulan in the shadows, who later turns out to be Sela), "Redemption, Part I", "Redemption, Part II", "Unification, Part II", and "All Good Things" (produced as one 2-hour episode).
4. The character, Q, appeared in at least one episode in every season.

Answer: False

Season #5 did not include a Q episode. All the other seasons had one, though. Season #1-"Encounter at Farpoint" and "Hide and Q", Season #2-"Q Who?", Season #3-"Deja Q", Season #4-"Q-pid", Season #6-"Tapestry" and "True Q", Season #7-"All Good Things"
5. Which "Star Trek" main character appeared in "Encounter at Farpoint"?

Answer: Admiral McCoy

McCoy was the one who "bridged" the gap between "The Original Series" and "The Next Generation" by appearing in the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Spock and Scotty appeared in "The Next Generation" as well, but in later episodes. Kirk appeared in the first "The Next Generation" movie, "Generations".
6. Who played a terrorist in "Starship Mine", who later played a major role in "Star Trek: Voyager"?

Answer: Tim Russ

Armin Shimmerman never played a major role on "Voyager", although he did play a major "Deep Space 9" role that was a minor role on "Voyager". The other two never had a part in "The Next Generation" series, but have major roles on "Voyager".
7. According to the original teleplay, who was responsible for the great jumps across the galaxy in "Where No One Has Gone Before"?

Answer: Kosinski

The Traveler was ultimately responsible in the aired episode, but in the original teleplay, it was Kosinski.
8. Why did Denise Crosby leave the cast near the end of the first season?

Answer: She was unhappy with her character's development.

Denise Crosby was unhappy with the way her character had developed from the start of the series. She didn't think that she could really do anything with the character, so she decided to bow out gracefully near the end of the first season.
9. During the second season, Gates McFadden decided to take a year off. When she came back, what was the reason behind her character's absence during that year?

Answer: She was filling in as the head of Starfleet Medical.

The Yamato was destroyed, so she would have died with the rest of the crew since the Enterprise didn't beam anyone aboard before the explosion. Crusher didn't learn about metaphasic shielding until about the middle of the fifth season, and her husband is already deceased.
10. OK, almost done. One more to go. Beverly Crusher and Wesley Crusher are real-life mother and son.

Answer: False

Gates McFadden plays Beverly Crusher and Wil Wheaton plays Wesley Crusher. They are not related, but they are *like* mother and son after the series is through because of the bond they created due to the relationship between their characters.
