Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of Serial 18, the Doctor and his companions catch a glimpse from space of the planet where the action of "Mission to the Unknown" takes place. What is its name?

Answer: Kembel

Although the TARDIS never actually landed on Kembel in this one-episode 'serial', it was sighted briefly on the TARDIS viewscreen at the end of the 18th Serial "Galaxy 4" and companion Vicki wonders what could be happening there.

Which nicely sets up "Mission to the Unknown", sometimes referred to as "Dalek Cutaway" as it served to set up the the 12-part story "The Dalek's Master Plan" (Serial 21).
2. The opening scene of "Mission to the Unknown" sees an unconscious man awakened by a shrill scream. Which member of the crew of the UN Deep Space Force Group 1 is he?

Answer: Jeff Garvey

Waking up in a dazed state, Garvey unholsters his pistol and begins mumbling to himself that he "must kill, must kill, must kill." There is no clue at this time as to the reason for his psychosis.

Jeff Garvey was portrayed by Barry Jackson.
3. What is the type of terrain where the crew has landed their ship?

Answer: Dense jungle

Kembel is considered to be the most hostile planet in the universe. Thus it made the ideal base for the Daleks to hatch their evil plan (to be revealed in Serial 21). Who would voluntarily land there?

And, to make it even more dangerous, the Daleks transplanted carnivorous plants into the already dangerous jungles of the planet.
4. What are the other crew members doing when first introduced on screen?

Answer: Repairing their ship

Lowery (the Captain of the ship) and Cory are working on getting their ship back in working order, so as to make it to their planned rendezvous with a freighter that won't wait for them if they arrive late.

Marc Cory was played by Edward de Souza, while Gordon Lowery was depicted by Jeremy Young.
5. Crewman Garvey is shot and killed by Crewman Cory.

Answer: True

Garvey, who woke up with a drive to kill, approaches Lowery from behind, ready to fire his pistol. Before he is able to do so, Cory sees him and shoots first, preventing Lowery's death.

Lowery is astonished and incredulous that Cory would do such a thing, even after Cory pulls a thorn from Garvey's neck and explains that it was what caused Garvey's actions.
6. What deadly plant's thorn is discovered that turned the crewman into a homicidal maniac?

Answer: Varga plant

Varga plants are native to the Dalek homeworld Skaro and were brought to Kembel to act as sentries within the jungle. Considering their ability to propel themselves by dragging themselves along with their roots and the deadly ability to turn their victims into killers when pierced by their thorns, they are quite effective as such.

And after being killed by Cory, Garvey transforms into a Varga plant himself.

Varga plants can be described as resembling cacti, covered in thorns and something akin to fur.
7. Who is revealed to actually be a member of the Space Security Force, with a license to kill?

Answer: Marc Cory

After killing Garvey, Cory reveals to Lowery that he is actually there to determine what the Daleks are doing in this region of space and specifically on the planet Kembel. Even though the Daleks invaded earth a thousand years ago, Cory reveals that in the past 500 years, the Daleks have taken over more than 70 planets.
8. As suspected, the Daleks are using the planet as a base to meet with a number of other alien species in a deadly alliance. How many emissaries are they waiting for?

Answer: Six

While Cory and Lowery are trying to set up a beacon to send a message back to their people, the Daleks are closing in on their location. They want to ensure that nothing disrupts their plans as they await the seven emissaries from other galaxies to join their alliance and their plans to invade the Earth empire.
9. As the alien emissaries meet with the Daleks, the last emissary to arrive expresses concern over the 'hostile beings' on the planet. The Dalek leader assures them that the beings will be exterminated. How do the humans escape?

Answer: They don't. They are all killed.

While watching the Daleks destroy their spaceship, Lowery is stabbed by a Varga thorn. When Lowery begins to chant, "Kill, kill", Cory immediately shoots him, knowing that he is a lost cause.

Cory quickly records a message for the beacon, but then the Daleks catch up with him and exterminate him.
10. The Space Force crew members manage to successfully launch a message beacon warning Earth of the Dalek plot.

Answer: False

The Dalek patrol finds Cory just as he finishes recording his message, and attack him before he can launch the beacon.

Back at the base, the Daleks and their six alien co-conspirators chant "Victory, victory, victory" as they revel in their plans for galactic domination.
