Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many of the castaways in this season had appeared in previous seasons?

Answer: Three

Fifteen castaways were sent out to the Philippines to start a new thirty-nine day season of "Survivor" and, before they were sent out, they were already split out onto one of three teams-- Matsing in blue; Kalabaw in red; Tandang in yellow. Before they were instructed to head out, they were introduced to three returning players, each of whom was removed from the game in a previous season due to injury. Mike Skupin (of "The Australian Outback") joined Tandang, Jonathan Penner (of "Cook Island" and "Micronesia") joined Kalabaw, and Russell Swann joined Matsing. All three teams were given a map and sixty seconds to salvage items from the ship before detaching a raft and paddling out.
2. Which tribe was completely dissolved by Day 11?

Answer: Matsing

Over the course of a week and a half, the three tribes encountered four combined Reward/Immunity Challenges, each of which allowed two teams to take Immunity and save themselves from Tribal Council. Every single one of these was lost by the blue tribe, Matsing, forcing them to whittle their tribe members down one by one.

After the fourth Tribal Council, held on Day 10, only Malcolm and Denise remained and they were forced to dissolve into Tandang and Kalabaw respectively.
3. Which castaway quit the game on Day 12?

Answer: Dana

On the morning of Day 12, Dana woke up feeling dizzy, nauseous, and dehydrated. When the sharp pains in her stomach led to her throwing up next to the camp, medical was called in. Jeff arrived with the medics to determine that Dana likely had irritation from an unknown source, but she would be able to continue in the game, potentially for another twelve hours before another check-up. Ultimately, her pain wouldn't be life-threatening.

She opted to be removed from the game on account of the pain and she was the first casualty of the Kalabaw tribe.
4. During this season, the Hidden Immunity Idols were found at which spot?

Answer: With the tribes' rice

All three teams were not only given a clue to the Hidden Immunity Idol (hidden in their provided rice bags), but a separate idol hidden in the same spot for each. Although RC, Russell, and Jonathan each found the clues to their idols within the first four days, locating the idols themselves took longer. Jonathan found the first one at the Kalabaw camp on Day 4, prying the emblem off the top of the rice box to grab it. Abi-Maria found hers at Tandang on Day 8. Denise and Malcolm found the Matsing idol on their last day at their camp, Day 11; Malcolm took it with him.
5. In order to take a Reward Challenge win on Day 15, one tribe gave up which of these?

Answer: Their rice

By Day 15, the Tandang tribe nearly ran out of rice, having enough for one more day of rations. The team pinned their blame on Mike for eating more than a fair share. However, the Reward Challenge on Day 15 proved to be a pivotal moment for both tribes as this highly-physical game, the first round of which lasted an hour, led the tribes to come to a deal formed mostly between Mike and Penner. Mike and Tandang offered to give up the reward (food and, unbeknownst to the losing tribe, letters from home) in exchange for Kalabaw's remaining rice.

It turned out Kalabaw only had a single day of rice as well.
6. Going into the merge, what tribe never went to Tribal Council?

Answer: Tandang

Though three tribes went into the game, it took nineteen days before members of the original Tandang tribe were able to hold onto their torches for the very first time and dip them into the ceremonial fire at Tribal Council, a streak unseen in all twenty-four previous seasons. Matsing went to the first four Tribal Council ceremonies, and when they were dissolved, Kalabaw went to the next two leading into the merge. Effectively, after the merge occurred, the yellow-buff never saw a voting session.
7. What was the name of the merged tribe in this season?

Answer: Dangrayne

On Day 17, Tandang and Kalabaw were visited by boats that would be able to take them to their new home beach. Both tribes were given ten minutes to collect their belongings and load them onto their boats to head elsewhere. Upon arriving, the tribes were treated to a feast of wine and food where they donned black buffs.

At this point in the game, Tandang had all six of their original members, Kalabaw had three of theirs, and Matsing had two of theirs. The tribe ultimately settled on the name Dangrayne because, likely because of the notable amount of rain experienced during the season.
8. Which castaway won the most Individual Immunity and Reward Challenges?

Answer: Malcolm

While there was a pretty fair distribution of reward and immunity winners throughout the game, the majority of wins went to Malcolm who, like Mike, won two Immunity Necklaces during the game. The difference, however, is that Malcolm went on every single reward in the post-merge portion of the game, even in a challenge he didn't win.

After leaving Matsing, he effectively reaped the benefits at every step of the game.
9. How many Hidden Immunity Idols successfully negated votes in this season?

Answer: Two

Several Hidden Immunity Idols found throughout the game complicated things post-merge as all of them went into play for the merged tribe.
The very first merged Tribal Council saw the votes split with the purpose of flushing out the first of these-- five people voted for Jonathan and he was forced to use the Kalabaw idol to negate the votes. This resulted in RC going to the jury instead.
Both remaining idols were revealed on Day 22 during Tribal Council by Malcolm and Abi-Maria. Malcolm never used his; Abi-Maria used hers to negate three votes and save herself on Day 27, sending Pete home.
10. Which castaway was the Sole Survivor of "Survivor: Philippines"?

Answer: Denise

After a hard-fought game, the final three for this season ended up being Denise, Michael, and Lisa. While all three received votes for the win at the final Tribal Council, Denise's unprecedented underdog story ended up winning her the game with six votes. Ultimately, as Sole Survivor, she attended every single Tribal Council of the season (a "Survivor" first) without getting voted out, and she did so without the aid or possession of a Hidden Immunity Idol. Both of her co-finalists avoided taking any votes all game (until the final Tribal Council).
