Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ted Danson - "Cheers"

Answer: Shelley Long

Before Ross and Rachel, before Cory and Topanga, there was Sam and Diane. In a Boston bar on Beacon Street called "Cheers", there was a former Red Sox relief pitcher named Sam "Mayday" Malone, played by Ted Danson. He owned the bar which was peopled by some very odd characters, including his well-educated, uptight waitress Diane Chambers, played by Shelley Long. Sam and Diane's bickering, on-again-off-again, love-hate relationship lasted from 1982 through December 15, 1986, when Shelley decided to leave Cheers as a regular character.
2. John Krasinski - "The Office"

Answer: Jenna Fischer

The American version of "The Office" aired from 2005-2013. Based on Ricky Gervais' British sitcom, the show was a mockumentary about daily life in an office in Scranton, Pennsylvania, i.e., Dunder Mifflin, which sells paper goods. Michael Scott was the bumbling manager of a bunch of quirky workers, including clueless Dwight Schrute, prankster Jim Halpert and receptionist Pam Beesly. Jim and Pam eventually married and had a family. Jim was John Krasinski, and Pam was Jenna Fischer.
3. Bob Newhart - "Newhart"

Answer: Mary Frann

First there was "The Bob Newhart Show", with Bob Newhart as Bob Hartley, a Chicago psychologist, and Suzanne Pleshette as his schoolteacher wife, Emily. Ten years later, Dick Loudon, a writer of self-help books, moved to Vermont to become an innkeeper. "Newhart" (even though his name was Loudon) ran from 1982 to 1990. Dick, the calm in the middle of this bizarre universe, was surrounded by Daryls, an unambitious maid, an odd handyman and Bob's loving and understanding wife, Joanna, who was played by Mary Frann.
4. Anthony Anderson - "Black-ish"

Answer: Tracee Ellis Ross

The Johnson family is an upscale black family on the sitcom "Black-ish" which first aired in 2014. Andre and Rainbow Johnson live in California, have good jobs and live in a predominantly white neighborhood with their four kids. Dre is an advertising executive, and Bow is an anesthesiologist.

While they seem to have achieved the American dream, Dre is afraid that his family will become too assimilated and lose touch with their roots. Dre and Bow are a loving couple who must deal with their kids problems, Dre's parents and racial issues. Anthony Anderson is the often troubled patriarch; Tracie Ellis Ross plays his wife.
5. Patrick Dempsey - "Grey's Anatomy"

Answer: Ellen Pompeo

Seattle Grace Hospital was the setting for the romance between Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd and Dr. Meredith Grey on "Grey's Anatomy". Shonda Rhimes' creation first aired on the small screen in 2005. The show was about the daily trials and tribulations of five surgical interns and their mentors. Ellen Pompeo plays one of the aspiring surgeons, i.e., Meredith Grey, daughter of the brilliant surgeon, Ellis Grey. Dr.

Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, married Dr. Grey on the season seven episode "White Wedding". Sadly, a car accident killed off Dr.

Shepherd in 2016.
6. Jason Segal - "How I Met Your Mother"

Answer: Alyson Hannigan

"How I Met Your Mother" ran from 2005 to 2014. Set in New York City, often at a bar called McLarens, the comedy is about architect Ted Mosby, his four friends, and how Ted met his wife. In between, we see Ted's attempts at romance and Barney Stinson's womanizing.

However, the stabilizing force of the show (IMHO) was the genuine, solid, consistent relationship between Ted's friends, i.e., Marshall Eriksen and Lily Aldrin. Marshall met Lily (and Ted) at Wesleyan University, and they were married in season two. Jason Segal was Marshall, and Alyson Hannigan was Lily.
7. Bruce Willis - "Moonlighting"

Answer: Cybill Shepherd

For those of you old enough to remember Bruce Willis on the small screen (when he still had hair), you may also recall his role as the wise-cracking private detective, David Addison. "Moonlighting" was a comedy-drama (the first 'dramedy') which ran from 1985 through 1989.

It featured Cybill Shepherd as former high-fashion model Maddie Hayes who was fleeced of her money by her accountant. David, who was running a failing detective agency, convinces Maddie to team up, and open the Blue Moon Detective Agency; their cases often took a back seat to their on-again-off-again romance.
8. Terence Howard - "Empire"

Answer: Taraji P. Henson

On January 7, 2015, the drama "Empire" debuted on network television. The show features CEO of Empire Entertainment, patriarch Lucious Lyon, his ex-wife Cookie and his three sons. The show is set in New York, but filmed in Chicago, Illinois. Lucious gets a medical diagnosis which forces him to think about choosing a successor for his company.

In the meantime, there are all kinds of machinations, both personal and work-related. Cookie, played by Taraji P. Henson, comes back to claim her share of the company and her share of her ex, Lucious, convincingly played by Terence Howard.
9. Ben Savage - "Boy Meets World"

Answer: Danielle Fishel

We first meet Cory and Topanga in "Boy Meets World" as they enter the sixth grade. The sitcom is set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where we follow them and their friend Shawn, as they then go to John Adams High School with Mr. Feeny (in the second season), and, later, on to college at Pennbrook.

The original show aired from 1993 to 2000, and was spun off in 2014 as "Girl Meets World", which was mainly about Cory and Topanga's daughter, Riley. Back to those halcyon days, where we see young love first begin to bloom between Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence.

They were played by Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, respectively.
10. Kyle Chandler - "Friday Night Lights"

Answer: Connie Britton

It's Friday night in Dillon, Texas, and you will find most of the residents at the stadium watching the Dillon High School Panthers play under the "Friday Night Lights". Their coach is the kind, gentle father figure, Eric Taylor, played by Kyle Chandler ("Early Edition"). Eric lives with his wife, Tami (played by "Nashville's" Connie Britton), his sixteen year old daughter, Juliet, and newborn daughter, Grace. Eric and Tami's relationship is what most couples aspire to, i.e., love, mutual respect and understanding.

The show ran from 2006 to 2011.
11. John Amos - "Good Times"

Answer: Esther Rolle

Florida Evans originally worked as a housekeeper for Maude Findley (Edith Bunker's cousin) in Tuckahoe, New York. Her character was so successful she, her husband and three kids were spun off to a housing project in Chicago, Illinois. The sitcom was called "Good Times" and it aired from 1974 to 1979.

This Norman Lear creation depicted a black blue-collar family having trouble making ends meet and keeping out of trouble. James Evans was the patriarch, played by John Amos (formerly of "Roots" and "Mary Tyler Moore"), with Esther Rolle as the put-upon matriarch, Florida Evans, who kept the family together.
12. James Gandolfini - "The Sopranos"

Answer: Edie Falco

"The Sopranos" (1999 to 2007) is a family show, the Mafia family, that is! Tony Soprano is a NJ mob boss who has to deal with murder, betrayal, violence and affairs...and that's just before morning coffee. Tony seeks the help of a psychiatrist to help him sort out his issues, some of which can be attributable to his cold, unfeeling mother. Tony is married to Carmela, and they have two teenage kids, A.J. and Meadow.

There are power struggles from within and without, but despite his high risk life, Tony can always count on Carmela to be there for him. Tony was played by James Gandolfino; Carmela ("Nurse Jackie") was Edie Falco.
13. Ed O'Neill - "Modern Family"

Answer: Sofia Vergara

I could have used Al and Peg Bundy, but the quiz is about couples who actually love each other. Instead, I used Ed O'Neill's later role as Jay Pritchett, closet-builder and patriarch of the California extended family on "Modern Family". The show first aired on September 3, 2009, and is about an unseen documentary filmmaker questioning the family about their daily lives.

The family includes Jay's grown son and daughter and their respective families; Jay's young Colombian wife, Gloria, Gloria's son, Manny, and Jay and Gloria's infant son, Joe. Got it? Jay is very much in love with Gloria who is played by Sofia Vergara.
14. Matthew Perry - "Friends"

Answer: Courteney Cox

The hit sitcom "Friends" aired from 1994 to 2004. The comedy was about six friends who lived in an apartment complex in Greenwich Village, NY and hung out at Central Perk. Ross and Rachel are a pair I could have chosen, but they were so cliche with their "on a break" activities and their on-again-off-again affair.

Instead, I chose Chandler Bing and Monica Geller because Monica had a crush on Chandler way back when they were in school. In fact, she became a chef because Chandler once said he liked macaroni! Matthew Perry was Chandler Muriel Bing. Courteney Cox (occasionally Arquette) was Monica, his wife and the mother of their twins.
15. Johnny Galecki - "The Big Bang Theory"

Answer: Kaley Cuoco

Johnny Galecki gets around. First he played David, Darlene's boyfriend on "Roseanne", before he moved on to "The Big Bang Theory". Johnny plays Caltech experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter who moves in with brilliant theoretical physicist Sheldon Cooper, in Pasadena, California.

The first episode debuted on September 24, 2007, when Penny (no last name mentioned) moved across the hall from Leonard and Sheldon. As time went on, Leonard wore Penny down, and they got married in season nine. Penny Hofstadter is played by Kaley Cuoco (she was a Sweeting for a while).
