Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Whirlybirds" - Chuck Martin

Answer: Pete Moore

This syndicated series was produced for 111 episodes and began airing in 1957. The premise focused on two men that hired themselves out, along with their helicopter, for various tasks. Their adventures could include anything from helping find lost people, delivering urgent cargo and even helping with law enforcement. The leads were played by Ken Tobey and Craig Hill.
2. "Emergency!" - Kelly Brackett

Answer: Joe Early

"Emergency!" was a long-running medical drama (1972-78) focusing on the staff in the E.R. of Rampart General Hospital in Los Angeles where sick and injured people were brought, usually by Squad 51 paramedics. Drs. Brackett (Robert Fuller) and Early (Bobby Troup) were employed as emergency physicians there. Brackett was the younger, confrontational, but highly efficient physician. Early was the older, more even-tempered, but no less competent doctor.

They were often seen working or consulting with each other on the same case.
3. "The Fall Guy" - Colt Seavers

Answer: Howie Munson

Lee Majors headed the cast in the title role. "The Fall Guy" referred to his occupation as a Hollywood stunt man. He used his skills to become an effective bounty hunter. Helping him was his younger cousin, Howie (Doug Barr). Their work landed them in many dangerous situations, but the exotic locales populated with beautiful women kept the guys from complaining too much.

The show aired form 1981-86.
4. "You Bet Your Life" - Groucho Marx

Answer: George Fenneman

"YBYL" was a game show thinly disguised as a showcase for Groucho's quick wit and wisecracks. Working as a team, two players had to answer general knowledge questions. Each game was preceded by Groucho interviewing the contestants, usually finding something about which to make a humorous comment. George Fennemen, with his modulated baritone voice, acted as sort of a stage manager and emcee who also took his share of ribbing from Groucho.
5. "The Joey Bishop Show" (sit com) - Joey Barnes

Answer: Larry Corbett

When "TJBS" first aired in 1961 it presented Joey Barnes (Joey Bishop) working as an assistant to a Los Angeles press agent. When the second season began, the whole premise and cast were scrapped (except for Joey). Joey had now become a TV star with his own talk show, a different wife (Abby Dalton) and set of friends. Among them was Larry Corbett (Corbett Monica) who was Joey's manager and always seemed to be hanging around the studio or Joey's apartment.
6. "Mr. Lucky" - Mr. Lucky

Answer: Andamo

This series only ran for one season (1959-60), but was noted for the lilting theme music composed by Henri Mancini. The premise was that Mr. Lucky (whose real character name was never revealed) operated a floating casino aboard his luxury yacht, "The Fortuna", always keeping legally beyond the 12-mile limit. By his side was Andamo (Ross Martin), his all-around right-hand man. Mr. Lucky was portrayed by John Vivyan, who bore a striking resemblance to Cary Grant; Grant having portrayed Mr. Lucky in a theatrical movie of the same title.
7. "Adam 12" - Pete Malloy

Answer: Jim Reed

This Jack Webb produced, long-running police drama (1969-75) centered around two L.A.P.D police officers who patrolled the streets in their cruiser, Adam 12. When the series began, the older veteran cop, Pete Malloy (Martin Milner), was breaking in a rookie, Jim Reed (Kent McCord) with the predictable complications that it caused. Reed eventually proved himself and was promoted from rookie to officer.

This series was briefly revived in 1989 for 52 episodes with different characters and cast.
8. "The Time Tunnel" - Tony Newman

Answer: Doug Phillips

Irwin Allen produced this futuristic sci-fi series which only aired for one season (1966-67). The plot concerned two scientists, Tony Newman (James Darren) and Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert), who developed a laser-powered machine which enabled time travel.

However, they accidentally became trapped in it and were whisked away to play a part in various crucial events in Earth's history from ancient days to the future. The machine always seemed to malfunction and the most inopportune times and required constant monitoring by a team of scientists back in the lab.

The series was not renewed for a second season as expected by the producers, so there was no closure. Tony and Doug never returned and were forever lost in time.
9. "Planet of the Apes" - Alan Virdon

Answer: Pete Burke

Following the success of the 1968 theatrical movie starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall, "Planet of the Apes" was brought to television in a short-lived series airing in the fall of 1974 for 14 episodes. McDowall, again donning simian makeup, reprised his role as a chimpanzee, but was given the name Galen in the TV show.

He befriends two astronauts, Alan Virdon (Ron Harper) and Pete Burke (James Naughton) who become stranded on the future Earth dominated by anthropomorphic apes. They are constantly on the run form the militaristic gorilla Urko (Mark Lenard) who wants to eliminate the two men before they can "contaminate" the other humans in the ape society with their radical ideas of freedom and independence.
10. "In the Heat of the Night" - Bill Gillespie

Answer: Virgil Tibbs

Yet another theatrical movie adapted for TV, "ITHOTN" was a long-running drama (1988 - 92) starring Carroll O'Connor as Bill Gillespie, a gruff but efficient police chief in Sparta, Mississippi. He finds himself partnered with a new, young, black, Chief of Detectives, Virgil Tibbs (Howard Rollins). Tibbs was a Sparta native, who had left to get an education, then returned.

Inevitable conflicts arise between Gillespie, who believes in the old-fashioned brand of southern justice and tried-and-true law enforcement, and Tibbs, who is educated in modern criminology techniques.

However, they gradually develop a mutual respect for each other.
