Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A - Which American situation comedy ran from 2001-2009 and starred John Belushi's brother?

Answer: According to Jim

Jim Belushi starred in this situation comedy about a family in American suburbia. Jim is the father of three until the seventh season when he and his wife have twins. He is a fan of blues music, and all of the Chicago professional sports teams. It was nominated for a number of awards over its run, but did not receive any major awards.
2. E - Which British TV show was about the German occupation of Guernsey?

Answer: Enemy at the Door

This show ran from 1978 through 1980. "Enemy at the Door" was about the German occupation of the Channel Islands, an actual event that occurred in WWII. Episodes typically showed how the islanders were very conflicted at having to do things for and with the enemy.
3. I - Where was "Introducing Gary Petty" first shown on television?

Answer: Australia

"Introducing Gary Petty" was a thirty-minute comedy show that ran for one season in 2000. It was about a man who was obsessed with getting revenge on those who may have snubbed him.
4. O - Which nine-episode show was cancelled after two episodes in the United States, but had all nine episodes run in New Zealand?

Answer: Of Kings and Prophets

The American show "Of Kings and Prophets" was supposed to be set in Biblical Israel, but was actually filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. It was based on the books of Samuel in the Old Testament of the Bible. Stories were centred around Saul and David, as well as kings of Israel.

The show was cancelled in the US in 2016 after two episodes due to low ratings, but all nine episodes were aired that year in New Zealand.
5. U - "Unforgettable" is an American television show about a police detective with hyperthymesia. What is hyperthymesia?

Answer: Superior memory

This show ran on a couple of networks from 2011-2015. "Unforgettable" was a great name for the series because the lead character, Detective Carrie Wells, has the very rare ability to remember everything she sees in fine detail. Hyperthymesia is a very rare condition where a person has a superior autobiographical memory.
6. A - Which American television show was mostly centred at Mel's Diner where the lead character worked as a server?

Answer: Alice

"Alice" was an American TV situation comedy that ran from 1976 through to 1985. It was based on the 1974 film "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". The show is about Alice, a recently widowed woman, who moves to Phoenix, Arizona to live with her young son. She gets a job at Mel's Diner as a server to support the two of them.
7. E - "Escape at Dannemora" was based on a true story.

Answer: True

"Escape at Dannemora" was a highly rated seven-part television show that was broadcast in the US beginning in November, 2018. It was directed by Ben Stiller, and tells the true story of the escape of two convicted murderers from the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York in 2015. Patricia Arquette won three awards for her role as Tilly, one of the prison workers who assisted in the escape. Ben Stiller also won an award for directing the show.
8. I - Which of these Australian game shows was popular with women in the mid-1960s?

Answer: It Could Be You

"It Could Be You" ran from 1961 through 1966 when it was first broadcast in Australia. It was revived in 1969, and again in the 1980s, but the first version seems to have been the most popular. Although classified as a game show, it wasn't a quiz show. Its unusual format that often involved reunions with long-lost relatives was quite popular with women at that time.
9. O - "One Foot In The Grave" is a British situation comedy that ran original episodes from 1990 through 1995, with Christmas specials running each year through 2000. What did the series inspire in 1992?

Answer: A novel

"One Foot In The Grave" is about an early retiree who is forced out of his job at the age of 53 when his position is declared redundant. He is always complaining about the world and his bad luck. The television series centres on him and his wife, a family friend, and a few neighbours. The novel features some of the most memorable moments from the first two series of the program.
10. U - What American television show was twice cancelled because of low ratings despite being based on a successful movie?

Answer: Uncle Buck

The original "Uncle Buck" was a 1989 movie starring John Candy. It received mixed reviews from critics, but was quite popular with viewers, ranking 18th in US earnings that year. The first "Uncle Buck" television show hit the airwaves in 1990, but was cancelled after only sixteen episodes due to low ratings.

It was reprised once again in 2016, but that version suffered the same fate as the previous TV version. It was cancelled after only eight episodes.
