Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the narrator of each episode?

Answer: Tony Robinson

Now much better known as Baldric from "Blackadder" and as the host of "Timeteam," Tony Robinson told the tales, and encouraged children to join him in the imaginary world of "Fat Tulip's Garden."
Much of the story was improvised as he went along through each episode.
2. What was the name of the tortoise?

Answer: Lewis Collins

Lewis Collins has been known to wear a white crash helmet and once tried to jump over Fat Tulip's house "because it's there"
3. What type of creatures were Sylv and Ernie?

Answer: Frogs

Sylv and Ernie live in Fat Tulip's garden, in the lily pond, and play cricket sometimes. They are not very bright.
4. During the opening title sequence, several kinds of foodstuff appeared. Which of the following was NOT one of them?

Answer: Chocolate

The title sequence was pretty surreal, in keeping with the rest of the show. After the 'cake had risen' and the 'egg was broken,' a pot of blue paint was thrown at a wishing well and dripped down to reveal the words "Tales from Fat Tulip's Garden." After that the bucket rose out of the well with an object sticking out of it. The object varied depending on which episode it was.
5. In the "Fred the Baddy" episode, what is delivered through Fat Tulip's letter box?

Answer: A kipper with a stamp on it

Fred the Baddy has escaped from prison and sets off to visit his "best friend" Fat Tulip. He sends him a message, in the form of a kipper with a stamp on, to let him know he is on the way.
6. In "Fred the Baddy" what makes the bus passengers itch?

Answer: Itching powder

Fred amuses himself on the journey to Fat Tulip's house by putting itching powder, sneezing powder, and stink bombs on the bus.
7. What was the name of Fat Tulip's dog?

Answer: Dorien

Tony Robinson voiced Dorien as slow and deep voiced, giving the impression of a "big shaggy doggy" - since none of the characters ever actually appeared on screen it was left to Robinson's characterisations and the imagination of the viewers to make their own picture of each one.
8. Which decade saw the original screening of "Tales From Fat Tulip's Garden"?

Answer: 1980s

The original series aired between 1985 and 1987 on ITV in the UK. Each episode was just ten minutes long and was on at 4pm, just in time for all the kids coming in from school.
9. What do Sylv and Ernie do with the bag of crisps, when Fat Tulip drops his shopping?

Answer: Trampoline on it until it bursts open

Sylv and Ernie are looking for a new place to live when they encounter Fat Tulip on his way home with his groceries. Fat Tulip drops them all and leaves a bag of crisps behind, which Sylv and Ernie use as a trampoline until it bursts. The bang makes them think they are being shot at and they flee into the garden.
10. In "Big Trouble" who is asleep at the end of the pier besides Fat Tulip?

Answer: Inspector Challoner

Inspector Challoner and Fat Tulip have to RUN to get off the pier before the gate is locked for the night. They just make it in time but the Inspector has left his trucheon behind at the end of the pier...
