"The Trip" Season One Trivia Quiz

Two very funny comedians tour northern UK, visiting a different restaurant each episode. "The Trip" (2010) is one of my favourite TV shows and the scenery shows the north at its best.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which comedians are the stars of "The Trip"?

Answer: Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon

Steve Coogan is famous for portraying Alan Partridge as well playing the lead in movies such as the BAFTA winning "Philomena" (2014) and voicing Silas Ramsbottom in the "Despicable Me" franchise. Rob Brydon is famous for his many impressions and once, on April Fools Day stood in for BBC Radio 2 presenter Ken Bruce on his show, without anyone realising. Brydon also appeared in "Gavin and Stacey" (2007-2010), playing the part of Stacey's Uncle Bryn.
2. When Steve calls Rob to invite him on the trip, for which magazine does he say he is working?

Answer: The Observer

"The Observer" is a UK newspaper, part of "The Guardian" group which is published on Sundays. It is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, having been first published in 1791.
3. In episode two, when discussing Warren Beatty's sexual conquests, Rob works out that Beatty has slept with all the women in which Welsh town?

Answer: Port Talbot

Rob actually means that Beatty has slept with the same number of women as there are living in Port Talbot and as Steve points out this figure, which equates to 246 women per year, would be possible if one had a different partner every weekday night, and had weekends off.
4. Which early 19th century poet is mentioned throughout episode three, the visit to Holbeck Ghyll?

Answer: Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Holbeck Ghyll is a restaurant in Windemere in the Lake District. In this episode, Rob has scallops followed by pigeon and Steve has rabbit followed by lamb. This is the first episode in which the "a-ha" of Steve's character Alan Partridge is mentioned and the relative happiness of tortoises and hares is discussed.
5. While dining at Hipping Hall (episode four), Steve tells a story about being taught how to walk like a woman by Bruno Tonioli. Unfortunately, Rob tells Steve his impression of Tonioli sounds like who?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger

Other impressions done over the meal include Ronnie Corbett, Craig Revel Horwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, fictional Spanish actor Manchengo Cheese, Hugh Grant and Alan Partridge, all done by Rob, while Steve also tries to outdo Rob with his own Michael Caine impression. The bill at Hipping Hall was £388.50.
6. In episode five, "The Yorke Arms", which 1982 song does Steve describe as, "reasonably melodic, ultimately disappointing song written in an attic"?

Answer: "Classic" by Adrian Gurvitz

Steve thought that the song, "while it may well have been written in an attic, was not, by any stretch of the imagination a classic", playing on the song's opening line "Got to write a classic, Got to write it in an attic". The song reached the top ten in UK and remains his biggest hit.
7. While sat at the bar in The Yorke Arms, a gentle duet of the Abba song "Winner Takes It All" leads to impressions of a James Bond villain, a Nazi soldier and which muppet?

Answer: The Chef

While trying to enunciate the words correctly in a Swedish accent, the song slips into the Swedish chef from the Muppets and from there quickly becomes a Nazi from the Quentin Tarantino movie "Inglourious Basterds" (2009) followed by a Bond villain, ascertaining that the winner does indeed take it all.
8. In episode five Rob describes himself as part of the Port Talbot Four, a group which also includes Anthony Hopkins, Richard Burton and which actor famous for playing David Frost in the 2008 movie "Frost/Nixon"?

Answer: Michael Sheen

Rob and Steve have a conversation over their meal regarding whether Steve could play the parts that Sheen does, with Steve obviously thinking that he is more than capable, whilst Rob remains to be convinced, although he does think that Steve would have been better at playing Peter Sellers than Geoffrey Rush in the 2004 movie, "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers".
9. In the final episode of the series, Rob and Steve go for breakfast rather than an evening meal. Where do they go for this meal?

Answer: The Angel at Hetton

The Angel breakfast is the cheapest meal the pair have had on their trip, costing just £24.40 and also provides us with the slightly awkward conversation about whether Steve would accept a Best Actor Oscar, if the trade off was a minor illness for one of his children.
10. Which make of vehicle have Steve and Rob used to tour the north and call in at all of these fabulous eating establishments?

Answer: Range Rover

The Range Rover was initially launched by British Leyland in 1970 and was exhibited in the Louvre Museum in Paris as an "exemplary work of industrial design." Rob and Steve have teamed up again to make more seasons of "The Trip" and I highly recommend them.
