Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many seasons did original episodes of "The Lone Ranger" air on TV?

Answer: 5

Although "The Lone Ranger" was broadcast from 1949-57, only five seasons contained new episodes. For three years, reruns were aired.
2. To which Native American tribe did Tonto belong?

Answer: Potawatomi

It is alleged that producer George Trendle decided to present Tonto as a Potawatomi since Trendle was originally from Michigan where this tribe is indigenous. If so, what Tonto was doing in Texas was never explained.
3. The first outlaw that the Lone Ranger pursued was Butch Cavendish who's gang ambushed the Texas Rangers and killed all but the Lone Ranger. Don't get 'weird' about this question, but what was the name of the actor that played Butch Cavendish?

Answer: Glenn Strange

George Glenn Strange was a strapping 6'5" tall and worked as a real-life cowboy, a deputy sheriff and a rodeo performer before deciding on an acting career. He was of Irish and Cherokee heritage. Beside performing in many westerns, he portrayed the Frankenstein monster in two movies in the mid-forties. He died in 1973 at age 74.
4. Tonto often called the Lone Ranger "Kemo Sabe" meaning, by a consensus of opinion, Trusty Scout or Faithful Friend. What does the name "Tonto" mean in his character's native language?

Answer: Wild

It is often misunderstood that "Tonto" means idiot or fool. This is true translated in Spanish, but in Potawatomi language, it means "Wild Man."
5. Where did the Lone Ranger get the silver to make his symbolic bullets?

Answer: a silver mine

He was co-owner with his brother, Dan Reid, of a silver mine whose location was kept secret. When his brother was killed in the ambush, the Lone Ranger became the sole owner. For a percentage of profit, he hired a retired Texas Ranger to work the mine, refine the ore and make bullets.

The Lone Ranger never accepted rewards; first of all on general principles and also because he had enough income from the silver mine that he didn't need to.
6. The Lone Ranger was in the same group of Texas Rangers in which his brother, Dan Reid, served. What rank did Dan Reid hold in the Rangers?

Answer: Captain

Not much is revealed about Captain Reid other than he is the brother of the only Ranger that survives an ambush. Played by actor Chuck Courtney, he is the Ranger that believes Cavendish's henchman, Collins, who says Cavendish cheated him and he wants revenge. Reid leads the six Rangers who follow Collins into the ambuscade in a blind canyon. Dan and four other Rangers are killed. Captain Reid left behind his wife Linda and a baby boy.
7. Out of all the TV episodes, how many outlaws did the Lone Ranger kill?

Answer: none

The Lone Ranger made it a creed not to shoot unless absolutely necessary and then only to wound and not kill. True to his word, he never mortally wounded a criminal. He pursued, captured and turned them over to a representative of law enforcement, preferring that the legal system deal with them.
8. From what did the Lone Ranger make his mask to hide his identity?

Answer: his brother's vest

According to Clayton Moore, the actual masks used in the series were made from plaster molds with felt applied on the outside of them. Purple felt was actually used in the days of black and white television.
9. In the first three-part TV episode, the Lone Ranger's brother, Dan Reid, was ambushed along with five other Texas Rangers by Butch Cavendish and his gang who were trying to take over what town?

Answer: Colby

After rescuing the kidnapped Sheriff Taylor and Doc Drummond, the Lone Ranger learns from them that Cavendish has been disposing of the most important men in the town of Colby (I guess you have to start somewhere) and substituting his gang members in their places.

The Lone Ranger, Tonto, and Taylor gradually round up the rest of the Cavendish gang. When Cavendish sees there is no hope left for him, he flees. The Lone Ranger pursues the escaping Cavendish and has one final showdown with his brother's killer. And true to his vow, he doesn't kill Cavendish, he shoots the gun from his hand and turns him over to the sheriff for trial.
10. Clayton Moore, who portrayed the TV Lone Ranger in all but one season's episodes, was legally prevented from wearing what part of the Lone Ranger's costume when making public appearances in character?

Answer: the mask

Born in the Chicago area in 1914, Moore started out as a circus acrobat and aerialist. After that he moved to New York and worked as a male model. In 1938 he migrated to Hollywood where he found work as a stuntman and bit player. A variety of reasons are given as to why Moore opted out of the 1953 filming season of "The Lone Ranger" and actor John Hart assumed the role.

A salary dispute is the reason most given, but Moore returned in 1954 to again bring TV outlaws to justice. Well after the Lone Ranger ended on TV, Moore continued to make public appearances in character. Legally forbidden to wear the iconic black mask, he donned an pair of wrap-around sunglasses during these performances. Moore passed away in 1999 at age 85.
