Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In season one episode two, titled "The Manhunt", we see Andy's leaky rowboat. What is the name he gave to it?

Answer: Gertrude

In this episode, Andy intentionally lets an escaped criminal overhear that he has a rowboat down at the lake. Of course he knew that his boat had a bad leak and would sink when the convict tried to make his getaway using old Gertrude. After the boat sank with the convict aboard, he was captured without a fight.
2. In the episode titled "Those Gossipin' Men", which was episode 15 of season one, a shoe salesman came to Mayberry. What shoe company was he a salesman for?

Answer: Manhattan Shoe Company

Wilber (Wilbur) Finch was a shoe salesman who came through Mayberry. Aunt Bee and her gossipy friends planted a seed that Wilber was actually a Hollywood talent scout to show that the men gossiped as much as the women. She was right. By the end of the day, Wilber broke the sales record for most shoes sold in a day by anyone from the Manhattan Shoe Company. All day long, the men brought in their sons and daughters to audition for Wilber, and in the process, they bought a lot of shoes too.

They thought Wilber was only pretending to be a shoe salesman to hide his identity as a talent scout.
3. In "Sheriff Barney", which was episode 12 of season two, Barney Fife received an offer to become sheriff of what town?

Answer: Greendale

Greendale was in need of a sheriff until the next election. The mayor and councilmen saw an article in the Mayberry Gazette about how low the crime rate was so very low there. They figured Andy would never want to leave his job, so they made a play for Barney instead. Barney was excited, but Andy thought it wasn't a very good idea for him to take on a position as a sheriff, due to his lack of experience. So, Andy changed jobs with Barney for a day so that he would see how different being a sheriff was, as opposed to a deputy. Barney was feeling low after not being able to handle the sheriff job, so Andy fixed things up so that a wanted bootlegger, Rafe Hollister, surrendered himself to Barney. Andy saved the day for Barney once again.
4. Season one episode 28 was titled "Andy Forecloses." Barney was dating Juanita Beasley, who was a waitress at the Junction Cafe. Her phone number was mentioned in this episode. What was it?

Answer: 142R

Barney was seeing waitress Juanita before Thelma Lou, and also on occasion when he was dating Thelma Lou. He'd call her often and recite poetry, sing, or just sweet talk her. In all 249 episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show," not once did we have the experience of seeing Juanita.

This is the first episode Juanita was mentioned in. Andy sees Juanita's phone number in Barney's citation book.
5. Season four episode one was titled "Opie the Birdman." In this episode, Opie wound up caring for three baby birds. He named them Wynken, Blynken, and Nod. When it became time to release the babies, which did he release first, second, and then last?

Answer: Nod, Wynken, and then Blynken

This one is for hardcore fans of the "The Andy Griffith Show." Opie had a slingshot and was warned by Andy to be careful with it. As he was walking around and playing with it, he accidentally killed a mother bird that was caring for its three babies. Opie was extremely upset and took the babies home to raise them until they were ready to be released into the world.

At first he really didn't want to let go of them, but his hesitance turned into wanting to see them take flight. For no particular reason, Nod was released first, then Wynken, and lastly, Blynken.
6. Season eight episode three was titled "A Trip To Mexico." Aunt Bee had won a contest, which entitled her to a trip for two to Mexico. What was the name of the contest she won?

Answer: Tampico Tamale Lucky Number Contest

Aunt Bee won a trip for two to Mexico through winning the Tampico Tamale contest. She had no idea who to take because Andy couldn't get away from work and Opie would have to be taken out of school. That left her two best friends, Clara and Myrtle. Instead of having to choose just one, Helen Crump, Andy's sweetheart, came up with the idea of offering both ladies half of the trip for free.

By the time they arrived at the airport back home, the three ladies were no longer speaking. They all wound up together, looking at all the pictures they took while in Mexico, and were immediately back to being best friends.
7. "Goober Goes To An Auto Show" is the title to episode 22 of season eight. Goober meets his old friend Roy at the auto show. What did Roy tell Goober his job title was at Amalgamated Motors?

Answer: Senior V.P. In Charge of Engineering

Goober and Roy were both telling tall tales about how well off they were. Goober lied and said he owned a chain of gas stations and Roy was an executive. Goober was first to be caught in the lie. He only had the one gas station in Mayberry. After leaving the auto show, Andy, Goober, Opie, etc. stopped for gas.

Inside the station, Andy spotted Roy working under a car. He was just a mechanic. Andy grabbed Goober and pointed out Roy for Goober to say hello so that Roy was caught in a lie too. Goober refused because he didn't want to embarrass Roy. Goober had a big heart. Goober very much resembles Jughead from the Archie comic books.

It's most evident with the cutout hat he wore.
8. Goober had a girlfriend named Flora who worked at the diner as a waitress. What was Flora's last name?

Answer: Malherbe

Goober is sweet on a waitress named Flora at the diner. The problem is that she only has eyes for Andy. When she waits on Andy and Goober, Andy always gets huge portions. Even though Goober gets much smaller portions, he claimed Andy's were only large because Flora knew Andy was Goober's friend. Goober was never the brightest star in the sky, but he did wind up with Flora in the end.
9. Season four episode 25 was titled "Divorce, Mountain Style." In it, Charlene Darling Wash wanted to divorce her husband Dud Wash. The divorce ritual involved burying several items under an oak tree. The items were the beak of an owl, a piece of bacon, a broke comb, and four tail feathers of which bird?

Answer: chicken hawk

Charlene decides she wants a divorce for a few reasons. The main one seems to be, and I quote Charlene: "I caught him makin' eyes at Idell Bushey durin' preachin'." Andy gets stuck driving Charlene quite a distance to an oak tree to bury those items and complete her divorce.

Then she becomes betrothed to Andy, much to his dismay. After the items were buried she has to recite an incantation. The incantation is: "Beak of owl, Strip of swine, tooth of the comb, take mine from thine. Kinaba in, Kinaba out, Kinaba in and 'round about." Andy gets out of the betrothal, thanks to a folklore book Barney found at the library.

It took the presence of a white horse with a black rider traveling east to west to curse the betrothed.
10. In episode nine of season one, titled "A Feud Is a Feud", two families had been feuding for 87 years. They were the Carters and the Wakefields who were trying to stop their two children from marrying. What were the names of those children?

Answer: Josh and Hannah

It's Andy to the rescue again as he tries to end an 87 year old feud between the Carters and the Wakefields so that Josh Wakefield and Hannah Carter could get married. Neither family knew why they were feuding and blood was never shed. Andy got Mr. Carter and Mr. Wakefield together, back to back with rifles, so they could walk off steps, then turn and shoot at one another.

They turned alright. They turned and ran as fast as their legs would carry them away. Of course everything turned out fine. Josh and Hannah finally got married.
