Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fresh out of a New York college, the central character of 'Ugly Betty', scooped a job at the fashion magazine "Mode". This unlikely career path for a 'plain' looking Hispanic girl called Betty turns out to be a life changing experience. What is Betty's surname?

Answer: Suarez

The premise of 'Ugly Betty' is based on the irony of a young girl with an odd fashion sense mingling with the residents of the couture world of "Mode" magazine. This young girl, Betty Suarez (played by America Ferrera), rises to the position of assistant to the Editor-in-chief of the magazine, Daniel Meade, but has dreams of and aspires to much more than this. At the end of the third series Betty would be promoted to the position of features editor at "Mode"!

The show deals with Betty's struggles to reach the position of editor in the cut-throat world of publishing as well as looking at her private life; her relationship with family members and love interests are particular favourites for show material.
2. Many of the issues brought up in the TV show 'Ugly Betty' involve family especially the family of the central character, Betty. What is the name of Betty's rather flamboyant nephew who is just as interested in fashion and "Mode" magazine, if not more so, than Betty herself?

Answer: Justin

Justin Suarez is the adorable nephew of Betty and he is said to be one of the main reasons for the early success of the show. Played by Mark Indelicato, Justin is extremely interested in musicals, fashion and culture. This, along with his rather effeminate behaviour, has led many fans of the show to assume that the character is gay.

Whilst the creator of the show seems to think it is very likely that Justin is gay, the character did not come out in the first few series. Seeing as throughout the first few series Justin was so young and such an interesting character it was always going to be likely that the producers of the show would like to get a lot more material out of Justin's adolescence; in particular, detailing how Justin fit in with his peers before a possible explicit expression of his homosexuality is aired.
3. Throughout the many series of 'Ugly Betty', the title character can almost always rely on the support of her family and that includes her older sister. What is the name of Betty's older sister who opened up a beauty salon in her own home?

Answer: Hilda

Hilda Suarez, played by Ana Ortiz, is the older sister of Betty and the mother of Justin. In the first series, Hilda is in a relationship with Santos (Justin's father) and story lines for these characters focused a lot of the time on the developing father-son bond between Santos and Justin.

Initially, Santos was uncomfortable with his son being so interested in theatre and wished he was more into sports such as basketball. However, their relationship strengthened and Santos eventually accepted Justin, even his rendition of "Good Morning Baltimore" from 'Hairspray' in the New York subway! That is probably one of the most memorable scenes from the first series.
4. Throughout the many series of 'Ugly Betty', the title character moves in and out of her father's house with desires of independence in the big city followed by a despondent return home. Betty's father, Ignacio, had which of the following passions?

Answer: Cookery

The Suarez family would always rave about how good Ignacio's food was and Ignacio even went as far as entering a competition to compete against a TV chef. Ignacio lost the battle in what seemed very much like a fixed result but the chef later came back to the Suarez home: the chef subsequently offered to pay for Ignacio's recipe as he was so impressed by it and wanted to use it in his own restaurant! The payment allowed the Suarez family to keep their home.
5. The main character of 'Ugly Betty' was for a long time the assistant to the Editor-in-chief of "Mode" magazine. What was the name of this editor who relied on Betty for much more than administrative help?

Answer: Daniel Meade

Betty Suarez was officially employed by "Mode" as an office assistant to Daniel Meade but her help extended into Meade's personal life and they had a very close, trusting relationship.

Daniel Meade was given the position of Editor-in-chief by his father, Bradford (who owned the publishing company), instead of another of "Mode" magazine's hot-shots, Wilhelmina Slater. As Daniel Meade developed a reputation for womanising and not taking his job seriously, Bradford (who would die later in the series) employed Betty as Daniel's assistant. This was done in the hope that Daniel would not find 'ugly' Betty attractive and thus concentrate on editing the magazine.
6. The TV show 'Ugly Betty' had its fair share of amusing characters and one such character was the receptionist at "Mode" magazine. What was the name of the materialistic receptionist who had very expensive taste with a low budget?

Answer: Amanda Tanen

Receptionist Amanda Tanen was one of the many funny characters that made 'Ugly Betty' such a worldwide success. This work-shy individual loved expensive clothing but didn't have the money to afford what she wanted. So, she would often come up with ways to get what she wants without having to cough up the cash.

There was very little she wouldn't do to get what she wanted and this was made evident in a particular episode where Betty and Amanda work on a project together. The aim of the project was to find out what one could do in New York City without spending much cash.
7. It isn't always the case that there is just one Editor-in-chief at "Mode" magazine. Which of the following 'Ugly Betty' characters, known for her cutting remarks and diva attitude, was an Editor-in-chief of the magazine at some point?

Answer: Wilhelmina Slater

The self-obsessed diva that was Wilhelmina Slater joined Daniel Meade as an Editor-in-chief and she finally got what she had long dreamed of. The relationship between Daniel and Wilhelmina was never straight forward and couldn't exactly be described as amicable, so how they would manage to work together to produce the magazine was an interesting storyline to watch.
8. Every magazine editor needs an assistant and this was the case in the fictional world of "Mode" magazine. Which of the following 'Ugly Betty' characters was a long-standing assistant to an Editor-in-chief of "Mode"?

Answer: Marc St. James

Marc St. James, who originally started out as a guest character, was the long time assistant to Editor-in-chief Wilhelmina Slater. Slater was notoriously hard to please but it was St. James who came closer than anybody to any sort of sincere praise from the "Mode" editor. This provided an amusing contrast to the amount of praise that the other Editor-in-chief, Daniel Meade, gave to Betty Suarez when she was his assistant.

Marc St. James is openly gay (the last person he told was his mother who didn't like it and disowned him) and protects Betty's flamboyant nephew, Justin, when the youngster was on work placements at "Mode" magazine.
9. Betty has had plenty of love interests over the many series of 'Ugly Betty' and this includes her short relationship in series three with the son of a very wealthy man. What was the name of this love interest who would eventually outrank Betty at "Mode"?

Answer: Matt Hartley

Everything seemed to be going well for Matt Hartley and Betty Suarez, that was until Betty's former boyfriend Henry Grubstick came back to New York City. Betty struggled to fight the feelings she had for Henry, her first love, and it spiralled into a lingering kiss with Henry before the latter left the city. Unfortunately for Betty, this moment of weakness was witnessed by her then current boyfriend, Matt, and they broke up at the climax of series three.

At the same time it was revealed that Matt would become an editor at "Mode" magazine, a position that would outrank the features editor position that Betty had just obtained.
10. Even though 'Ugly Betty' is predominantly about the main characters and their involvement with "Mode" magazine, there are a number of other characters that make the show what it is! Suzuki St. Pierre, played by Alec Mapa, was the presenter of an entertainment show that frequently featured the scandals and successes of "Mode". However, is Suzuki St. Pierre the presenter's real name?

Answer: No

Suzuki St. Pierre was the stereotypical male fashion reporter. He was camp, spiteful, cutting and materialistic, but, an episode in series three of 'Ugly Betty' revealed a startling piece of information! Betty Suarez, and her boss Daniel Meade, found the home of St. Pierre after a strange series of events and they found out that Suzuki was far from the personality he adopted on screen.

Instead he was seen to be an ordinary guy with a wife and a couple of kids and not all that interested in fashion! He only adopted the stereotypical role so that he could get ahead in his career. Suzuki's real name is Byron Wu.
