Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sheldon was born in the state of Texas. According to his mother, based on what she said in the episode "The Luminous Fish Effect," Sheldon was born at what store?

Answer: K-Mart

Sheldon was born in Galveston, Texas, and his mom said he was born at a K-Mart in episode 4 of the series, "The Luminous Fish Effect." However, Sheldon said he was born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in the episode "The White Asparagus Triangulation." Sheldon's mother is Mary Cooper, his father, George, is deceased, his sister is Missy Cooper, and he has an older brother that has not been named.

He was born between April 20th and May 20th, 1980, because his astrological sign is Taurus, the bull.
2. At the age of 12, he build a CAT Scanner at home, which led to his sister Missy's guinea pig being incinerated. What was the name of her guinea pig?

Answer: Snowball

He suffered radiation burns, and was taken in a helicopter to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Snowball was incinerated by the CAT scanner, and it led to an expression in his household, "Not Snowball's chance in a cat scanner". We learn this in the episode "The White Asparagus Triangulation".
3. What award did Sheldon win when he was fourteen and a half?

Answer: Stephenson Award

We learn this in the episode "The Jerusalem Duality." The episode focuses around 15-year-old Dennis Kim, a child prodigy who won the Stephenson Award at a younger age than Sheldon. When Sheldon won it, he was the youngest to do so. Dennis Kim was going to join the science department at Caltech, and at the welcoming reception, due to Sheldon becoming depressed over his arrival, the other guys devised a way to get Dennis distracted by girls.

Their plan worked, and Sheldon announced, after Dennis Kim leaving with his new girlfriend, that he will continue his research.
4. What is Sheldon's main research topic at Caltech?

Answer: String theory

Sheldon has worked at Caltech since 2003, though he was fired for about three weeks in the episode "The Luminous Fish Effect," which was the fourth episode of season one. He was fired because he called his new boss, Dr. Eric Gablehauser, an idiot. String theory is a growing division of physics that puts together quantum mechanic and Einstein's theory of relativity into a quantum theory of gravity, which would explain the entire universe.

Sheldon spends most of his time at work on the string theory, it is mentioned in episodes such as "Pilot," "The Jerusalem Duality," and "The Terminator Decoupling." When the guys took a trip to the North Pole over the summer of 2009, in the episode "The Monopolor Expedition," they were studying magnetic monopoles, hoping to confirm string theory.

When the guys got back in the episode "The Electric Can Opener Fluctuation," Sheldon learned that his positive results, that he was thrilled over, were tampered with by the guys.
5. Which of these is true about Sheldon?

Answer: All of these are true

There are numerous references and situations throughout the series that deal with these idiosyncrasies, so I can't mention them all or they would go on forever. These are part of why some characters can hate him and find him annoying at times. An example of Sheldon's inability to understand sarcasm occurred during the episode "The Big Bran Hypothesis" where Leonard said, "For God's sake, Sheldon, do I have to hold up a sarcasm sign every time I open my mouth?" Sheldon replied, "You have a sarcasm sign?" not getting the sarcasm in the sentence. For the most part, Sheldon doesn't get sarcasm, though during the episode "The Monopolar Expedition" Sheldon told Leonard that he believed Penny wanted a carnal relationship with him, but he said he was being sarcastic, after Leonard began to take him seriously.

Sheldon has an inflated ego, and his consideration of himself as being perfect is sometimes found offensive by characters. He once remarked, "I often forget that other people have limitations, it's so sad." He also doesn't understand social norms; he once dumped Penny's laundry onto an electric power line after Penny prevented his "laundry night", which is part of his schedule.
6. What does Sheldon call his grandmother?

Answer: Meemaw

Sheldon calls his grandmother Meemaw, and Sheldon's grandmother calls him Moon Pie. We learn this in the episode "The Terminator Decoupling". While Penny was in Sheldon's room due to him needing her help, she opened a letter from Sheldon's grandmother.

She started to read it and said to Sheldon over the phone, "She calls you Moon Pie!" Sheldon reacted emotionally and said, "No one calls me Moon Pie but Meemaw." He then said to Penny, "She calls me Moon Pie, because I am nummy-nummy and she could just eat me up." He also mentioned that his grandmother called him Moon Pie during the episode "The Creeping Candy Coating Corollary".
7. Sheldon does have kind traits, and in the episode "The Financial Permeability" he lent money to whom when they needed it?

Answer: Penny

When Penny began running up the stairs, Sheldon was right outside his door in the hallway. Then Penny told Sheldon to shut the door. Sheldon did, and remained in the hallway while Penny was in the apartment. Penny got Sheldon into the apartment and explained that the manager was collecting rent and she didn't have the money to pay it.

Sheldon then lent money to Penny, and he didn't care about when he got it back. Leonard said later in the episode that it was "one of [Sheldon's] few idiosyncrasies that didn't make [Leonard] want to, you know, kill him."
8. Which of these things does Sheldon like?

Answer: Monkeys

We learn that he likes monkeys in the episode "The Friendship Algorithm" when he tried to become friends with Barry Kripke, because he was told that Kripke only allows his friends to use the open science grid computer in his office, which Sheldon needed to use. During the process of trying to become Kripke's friend, he asked Kripke if he liked monkeys. Kripke said no, which prompted Sheldon to become a bit angry and say, "Who doesn't like monkeys?" Sheldon also went to the mall to find a book on making friends.

He found a book about that in the children's department, and mentioned that he liked monkeys to a little girl. He eventually succeeded in become friends with Kripke, but he had to kick Raj out of his circle of his friends to accommodate Kripke, due to Raj getting a question wrong on his questionnaire.

When Kripke told Sheldon that he had no control over the open science grid computer, he put Raj back in and mentioned, "He likes monkeys." We also learn that he has a fear of the other options in the same episode.
9. Sheldon shows an adherence to routine throughout the series, and that is that he has a routine when knocking on doors.

Answer: True

Whenever Sheldon knocks on someone's door, he knocks three times, says the person's name he is seeking, and repeats that twice. In the episode "The Staircase Implementation," which is a flashback episode, Sheldon uses it, showing that he has been using it for years.

However, he didn't use it in the beginning of the series, such as the moment in "The Hamburger Postulate" when he runs across the hall and simply knocks on Penny's door. Since he began using it he has never changed his behavior, despite Penny telling him that he doesn't need to knock so much.
10. For portraying Sheldon in "The Big Bang Theory" which actor won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series during the Emmy Awards on August 29th, 2010?

Answer: Jim Parsons

Sheldon is often referred to as the breakout character of The Big Bang Theory. That means he is the most talked about character in the series. Winning the Emmy was Jim Parsons' second Emmy nomination, he was nominated for the same award in 2008, and his first win.
