"The Big Bang Theory": Sheldon Cooper Quiz

Sheldon Cooper is one of the most eccentric characters in "The Big Bang Theory". He has lots of odd idiosyncrasies and is one of my favourite characters.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sheldon, like most of the characters in the show, works as a scientist. But what type of scientist is he?

Answer: Theoretical physicist

Leonard is an experimental physicist, Bernadette is a microbiologist and Howard is an aerospace engineer.

Sheldon Cooper is a senior theoretical physicist working at Caltech. He studies string theory, and many episodes are focused on his work: in "The Romance Resonance" (S7E6), it is said that he discovers a new element.
2. Sheldon Cooper is extremely intelligent - he has an IQ of 187, started college at the age of 11 and claims to have... what?

Answer: an eidetic memory

According to Sheldon (in "The Big Fish Paradigm"), he hasn't forgotten a single thing since the day his mother stopped breastfeeding him (and then starts to describe it, saying "it was a drizzly Tuesday"). His eidetic memory is referenced many times during the series, and often the source of jokes or used to talk about past events.

("The Lunar Excitation": S3E23)
Leonard: "How many times have I asked you not to do that?"
Sheldon: "Counting this instance? 317."

("The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary": S3E5)
Leonard: "Yeah, I don't remember that."
Sheldon: "June 30th, 2004. Opening day of Spider-man 2 at the AMC Pasadena. They only had red Icees, no blue.""
3. Sheldon has trouble understanding jokes or sarcasm, especially in the first few seasons. However, he does make some jokes or sarcastic comments, often following them with what phrase?

Answer: "Bazinga!"

This is one of Sheldon's "catchphrases" - he uses it a lot over the series. The first occurrence of it is in "The Monopolar Expedition" (the series 2 finale). It is used after what he describes as practical jokes: for instance, he uses it in "The Good Guy Fluctuation" (S5E7) when he jumps out from underneath the couch, taking Leonard by surprise.
4. Sheldon Cooper is thought to have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For example, three of the below statements about him are true. Which one isn't?

Answer: He clicks his fingers three times before eating

He shows plenty of traits associated with OCD, and one episode even centers on Amy pointing this out and trying to help him care about these things less.

Sheldon has a bathroom schedule, eats food on a specific day of the week, has "Monday pyjamas", labels everything (including his label maker), always does laundry on a Saturday night and shows many other routines and aversions to anything new or different.
5. Sheldon is a massive nerd. He enjoys most science fiction shows, with one exception. An ongoing joke is that he hates which of the following shows?

Answer: Babylon 5

Sheldon is seen watching "Doctor Who", makes several comments about being disappointed when "Firefly" was cancelled and loves "Star Trek". He is also a big fan of "Star Wars", "Battlestar Galactica", most comic books (he especially likes the characters Batman and The Flash) and has read "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter". He can speak Klingon and plays lots of video games (everything from "The Legend of Zelda" to "Ms. Pacman").

However, he hates "Babylon 5" and this is mentioned several times throughout the series.
6. Which of these things is NOT true about Sheldon Cooper?

Answer: He plays the cello

Leonard plays the cello, but Sheldon doesn't.

Sheldon owns a theremin, as seen in "The Bus Pants Utilization" (S4E12). He plays paintball at weekends with his friends in multiple episodes. He used to practise Tuvan throat singing, although he stopped when Leonard moved into his apartment, as we find out in "The Large Hadron Collision" (S3E15).
7. Which of the following words best describes Sheldon's religion, or attitude towards it?

Answer: Irreligious

Despite his massively religious Christian mother, he shows no particular interest in religion. Although he sometimes says "God" (in phrases such as "My God"), promised his mother he would go to church once a year and occasionally comments on Raj's or Howard's religion, he seems to be quite irreligious and on a few occasions, it is stated or hinted that he doesn't believe in a deity.

Raj is Hindu and Howard is a Jew, although both of them eat forbidden foods or break important rules in their respective religions.
8. In the season 3 finale, a new character is introduced, when she is matched up to Sheldon Cooper by an online dating website. Who is this person?

Answer: Amy Farrah Fowler

In "The Lunar Excitation", Raj and Howard blackmail Sheldon into signing up for online dating. He is matched up with Amy (who made a pact with her mother that she would go on a date once a year) and she becomes a main character very quickly.

Their relationship is very odd, as Sheldon is close to asexual, although the two characters are both very intelligent and have similar personalities. The relationship develops over several seasons, with the two becoming more and more intimate, emotionally and physically. Although they might not be as close as a normal couple, relative to Sheldon, they are very close.
9. Mentioned in many episodes, and even a main plot story in one, Sheldon cannot do which of the following things in the beginning of the series?

Answer: Drive a car

Sheldon cannot drive a car, so Leonard normally drives him to work (they work in the same place anyway) and someone always has to drive him if he wants to visit the comic book store, train store or anywhere else. He comes to be a big burden on his friends in "The Euclid Alternative" (S2E5), and they try and get him to learn to drive, although he can't manage it.

Raj cannot talk to women, at least, not without alcohol, medication or the placebo effect, until "The Bon Voyage Reaction" (the season 6 finale).
10. Sheldon has many fears. Which of these does Sheldon not have a phobia of?

Answer: Swords

Sheldon is not shown to be afraid of swords - he and Leonard bought a pair of swords for their apartment, he and Leonard wonder whether to start a sword collection and sword fighting or swords and weaponry feature in many of his favourite TV shows and video games.

He has many phobias though: he shows signs of ornithophobia (birds), mysophobia (dirt/contamination), aphephobia (human contact), hemophobia (blood) and glossophobia (public speaking).
