Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apart from the Master, what or who was the only adversary to confront the fifth Doctor in both his first and second seasons?

Answer: The Mara

The Mara appeared in both "Kinda" in 1982 and "Snakedance" in 1983 - both written by Christopher Bailey. An urban myth has it that the former was in fact written by musician Kate Bush using a pseudonym - utter poppycock of course but what a lovely thought!
2. What was the name of the Silurian and Sea Devil's creature that wasn't particularly well-realised on screen?

Answer: The Myrka

The Myrka: Infamous for so many reasons. Being operated basically unrehearsed by a couple of guys who used to be the front and back end of a pantomime horse. For being still wet with paint when filming began. For Ingrid Pitt trying to do some weird karate kick on it. But respect to any monster that can knock down a polystyrene bulkhead!
3. What species' weapon inadvertently causes the Great Fire of London?

Answer: The Terileptils

A Terileptil weapon is shown to be the origin of the fire on Pudding Lane in "The Visitation". The Terileptil leader's mask showcased the first use of animatronics in the series. The fourth Doctor had previously referenced the Great Fire of London at the conclusion of "Pyramids Of Mars" saying he had previously been blamed for causing it.
4. Lynda Baron had parts in a first Doctor story and an eleventh Doctor story. Who did she play during the fifth Doctor's era?

Answer: Captain Wrack

Lynda Baron (although not seen) was heard singing "the Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon" in "The Gunfighters" opposite William Hartnell's first Doctor in 1966. More recently she appeared opposite Matt Smith's eleventh Doctor as Val in "Closing Time" in 2011.

In 1983 she appeared as Captain Wrack in fifth Doctor story "Enlightenment". She is perhaps most famous though for her role as Nurse Gladys Emmanuel in the popular BBC sitcom "Open All Hours."
5. What was the name of the commanding Urbankan in "Four To Doomsday"?

Answer: Monarch

Monarch, played by Stratford Johns, was accompanied by Enlightenment and Persuasion, played by Annie Lambert and Paul Shelley respectively. This story was actually the first story filmed starring Peter Davison as the fifth Doctor although it was the second broadcast.
6. What was the name of the dog-like biped in "Terminus"?

Answer: The Garm

Originally conceived by writer Stephen Gallagher to be menacing and only shown purely as glowing eyes in the shadows and as a silhouetted figure, the cute doggie that eventually ended up on screen was admittedly not the show's finest hour.
7. Which threat did the fifth Doctor NOT face?

Answer: The Raston Warrior Robot

Although the Raston Warrior Robot did appear in "The Five Doctors" it was only the third Doctor and Sarah Jane (and a bunch of really unlucky Cybermen) that encountered it.
8. Which character from the fifth Doctor's final season returned in the first story of the sixth Doctor's first season?

Answer: Lytton

Commander Lytton first appeared working for the Daleks in the fifth Doctor story "Resurrection Of The Daleks" and returned the very next year in "Attack Of The Cybermen" opposite the sixth Doctor. The fifth Doctor never actually met or interacted with Lytton during "Resurrection Of The Daleks" which makes the sixth Doctor's proclamation at the end of "Attack Of The Cybermen" that he had misjudged Lytton all along seem rather odd.
9. John Normington appeared in a seventh Doctor story and also an episode of "Torchwood". Who did he play in a fifth Doctor story?

Answer: Morgus

After playing Morgus in "The Caves Of Androzani" John Normington returned to the series playing Trevor Sigma in seventh Doctor story "The Happiness Patrol". Finally, in 2006 he appeared as Tom Flanagan in "Doctor Who" spin-off "Torchwood" episode "Ghost Machine".
10. Who did Michael Gough play during the fifth Doctor's tenure?

Answer: Hedin

Michael Gough played the misguided Councillor Hedin in "Arc Of Infinity". He is perhaps best known in "Doctor Who" fandom though for playing the Celestial Toymaker in the first Doctor story of the same name. He was also once husband to former "Doctor Who" companion actress Anneke Wills (Polly).
