Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Ryan planning on going at the beginning of this episode?

Answer: Chicago

Ryan's girlfriend, Lindsay, has decided to move to Chicago with her mother, as we find out in "The Rainy Day Women." Ryan decides to catch a bus to Chicago to visit her but Seth stops him. Portland is where Seth runs to at the beginning of the season (and also where season one's Luke moved). Chino is, of course, Ryan's hometown. Pittsburgh is season one character Anna's hometown.
2. Seth talks Ryan into joining him, Marissa and Summer at the mall where the girls are doing what?

Answer: picking up clothes for a charity drive

The four teens are in the storage area of one of the stores and end up getting locked in. Naturally, no one's cell phone has reception so they can't call out. Seth and Ryan end up crawling through vent shafts (which are always easily accessible in the world of television and movies) and unlocking the door, but they decide to stay in the mall.
3. Kirsten and Julie meet up with Carter Buckley, "Newport Living's" new editor, for dinner. Who plays Carter Buckley?

Answer: Bill Campbell

Bill Campbell takes on the role of Carter Buckley, who not only gets involved with Kirsten on a professional level, but on a personal one as well. Bill Campbell is no stranger to television and has had recurring roles on shows such as "The 4400", "Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit", "Once and Again", and "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

In 2000, Campbell was one of "People" magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People." A bit of random trivia, according to www.imdb.com, Campbell is the heir to the Champion spark plug fortune.
4. What do Seth and Summer argue about while in the mall?

Answer: a postcard from Zach

Summer had received a postcard from Zach, who at this time was still in Tuscany, Italy. Seth sees it in Summer's bag when he's alone and decides to read it. He doesn't finish it before Summer comes back and catches him. Their argument is cut short when the security guards show up and the four teens have to make a run for the car.
5. A man from Julie's past, Lance, shows up in this episode with an item with which he uses to try and blackmail Julie. What is this item?

Answer: pornographic video

Lance Baldwin, played by Johnny Messner, shows up with the tape and demands that Julie pay him or else he'll make sure Caleb and the rest of Newport Beach will see the tape. This is the start of a plotline that will grow over the next few episodes and all we see in The Mallpisode is Lance's proposition to Julie and then later we see Julie watching the tape in the privacy of her home. Johnny Messner guest stars for five episodes of "The O.C." Messner originally planned on being a sportscaster but then made the wise decision to turn to acting.

He has already starred in three movies with Bruce Willis: "Tears of the Sun" (2003), "The Whole Ten Yards" (2004) and "Hostage" (2005).
6. Kirsten lost her wedding ring in this episode.

Answer: False

Sandy notices that Kirsten isn't wearing her ring and when he confronts her, she tells him she's misplaced it. Sandy spends the entire episode trying to replace it. He starts out searching for it underneath the sink, removing pipes and drains. When he can't find it, he goes to an arcade to win her a plastic ring.

This has sentimental value because when Sandy first proposed to Kirsten, it was with a plastic vending machine ring. Caleb is along for the fun and he and Sandy have the chance for some male bonding. We see at the end of this episode, however, that Kirsten never did lose the ring; she had it hidden in a bedside drawer.
7. Which musician is featured six times on this episode's soundtrack?

Answer: Beck

Beck had recently released a new album, "Guero", at the time of this episode. "The Mallpisode" featured five original songs by Beck: "Girl", "E-Pro", "Que Onda Guero", "Scarecrow" and "Missing". It also featured Beck's cover of Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You In The End". Singer Jem has had many songs on "The O.C." over the past two seasons such as "Just A Ride", "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Flying High". Sam Prekop had one song on this particular episode titled "C + F". Imogen Heap has been featured on "The O.C." as well with songs such as "Goodnight and Go" and "Hide and Seek."
8. Olivia Wilde's character, Alex, does not make an appearance in this episode.

Answer: False

Alex Kelly (Olivia Wilde) does make a brief appearance in this episode, though the relationship with her and Marissa is not a major plotline of "The Mallpisode." She's mentioned throughout the show and appears at the end when she stops by Marissa's house to find that Marissa isn't there like she had claimed earlier. Julie tells Alex that Marissa has only ever loved one person, meaning Ryan.
9. Who overhears Summer and Marissa talking about Marissa's feelings for Ryan?

Answer: Ryan

When the four teens realize they're locked in the storage room, Seth and Ryan crawl into the vent shafts. Seth falls through and goes around to open the door for the girls. Ryan decides to go back the way he came and while approaching the opening in the storage room, overhears Marissa and Summer talking. Marissa is admitting that she still has feelings for Ryan. Seth cuts the conversation short when he opens the door and then unknowingly reveals Ryan's obvious eavesdropping by waving at him.
10. What sport do Ryan, Summer, Seth and Marissa play while staying in the mall?

Answer: hockey

After Summer convinces the others to stay the night, they get hockey gear from a sporting goods store, including jerseys, facemasks, gloves, sticks and roller blades. The ball goes down to the lower level and while going down the escalator, one of the girls crosses a security laser beam.
