quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1976, SNL producer Lorne Michaels went on the air and made an offer to The Beatles to re-unite on the show and play three songs. What dollar amount was his first offer for all four Beatles?

Answer: $3,000

A month later, he upped the offer to $3200 and hotel accommodations. In a skit several months later, Michaels is seen explaining to Beatle George Harrison that the offer was $3200 for all the Beatles to appear at once, not $750 for one Beatle. Paul McCartney has said that he and John Lennon were watching the show at Lennon's apartment the night Michaels made the initial offer.

They knew it was a joke, but toyed with the idea of driving to the studio that night and taking him up on the offer.
2. In the early 80's, Jean Doumanian took over as producer when Lorne Michaels left the show. One of the many changes made during this time was taking away the famous line "Live, from New York, it's Saturday night!", which opened every show. What was the line changed to?

Answer: We're live from New York on a Saturday night

"Weekend Update" was also changed to "Saturday Night News". The changes did not last long, and neither did Doumanian who was replaced by Dick Ebersol after 12 shows had aired.
3. When the show debuted in 1975, its original name was "Saturday Night". Why wasn't it called "Saturday Night Live" in it's first season?

Answer: A show on another network had that name

"Saturday Night Live" was the name Lorne Michaels originally wanted to use, however ABC had a variety show called "Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell". Cosell's show was mercifully canceled after one season, allowing Michaels to use the name he wanted.
4. 'The Five Timers Club' consists of all the people who have hosted SNL five or more times. Who was the first female member of this club?

Answer: Candice Bergen

Candice Bergen hosted for the first time on November 8, 1975, making her the first woman to host the show. Lily Tomlin would become the second two weeks later.
5. Controversial comedian Andrew "Dice" Clay hosted the show in 1990. One of the regular cast members boycotted the show, stating, "I know in my heart I can't work with him". What regular cast member was it?

Answer: Nora Dunn

Clay's comedy material consisted largely of anti-women, anti-gay, ethnic, and racial humor, all of which Dunn found offensive. Musical guest Sinead O'Connor also refused to appear, being replaced by Spanic Boys and Julee Cruise. In the opening skit, Clay and Jon Lovitz did a parody of "It's a Wonderful Life", showing Clay what would have happened that night if he hadn't hosted.

In the skit, Dunn is crushed by O'Connor's amplifier and replacement host Frank Zappa (played by Dana Carvey) delivers a monologue so long and boring NBC cancels the show.
6. Finish the name of this segment from the show: "Deep Thoughts by ___________".

Answer: Jack Handey

"Deep Thoughts" were sometimes short, sometimes rather long segments that usually played before commercials. With relaxing music playing softly and a peaceful view of an ocean or forest, Jack Handey would read his 'thought for the day' on various subjects.

Some of his better short thoughts were: "If they ever come up with a swashbuckling school, I think one of the courses should be 'Laughing, Then Jumping Off Something'", and "Too bad you can't buy a voodoo globe so that you could make the earth spin real fast and freak everybody out."
7. Who was voted off the show by viewers via a call-in poll in 1982?

Answer: Andy Kaufman

After Kaufman's 14th appearance on SNL in 1982, the show let viewers decide if he would be back for a 15th time. Parts of the bizarre comedian's act, which included wrestling women, were deemed offensive by many people. "Saturday Night Live" may have intended the call-in poll to be tongue in cheek, but people did call and only 28% wanted Andy to return.
8. Chevy Chase was the first original cast member to leave the show, departing midway through the 1976-77 season. Who were the next two cast members to leave the show?

Answer: John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd

In 1979, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd had a tough decision to make. Staying with the show would conflict with their plans to make a movie. They could either leave the show to make the movie, or stay with the show and hope the opportunity to make the movie would still be there the next summer.

They chose to leave "SNL" in favor of making "The Blue Brothers". One season later, the other cast members listed were all gone from the show as well.
9. Who were the first brothers to appear on the show together as either a regular cast member or featured player?

Answer: Bill Murray and Brian Doyle Murray

Bill Murray joined the cast in 1977 after Chevy Chase left the show. Brian Doyle Murray joined the show as a featured player for the 1979-80 season, Bill's last year. Peter Aykroyd was also a featured player in 79-80, but Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi had already left the show. Jim Belushi didn't join the cast until 1983, a year and a half after John's death.

Although they have both been featured players over the years, to my knowledge Al Franken and Tom Davis are not related.
10. Who has NOT been a regular cast member on "Saturday Night Live"?

Answer: Dan Six

A young Gilbert Gottfried was part of the doomed 1980-81 cast, the first after all the remaining original cast members left the show. Danitra Vance was part of the equally doomed 1985-86 cast. The underrated Nancy Walls joined the cast for the 1995-96 season. Dan Six was my high school shop teacher.
