Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In March of 1973, "The $10,000 Pyramid" premiered on which network?

Answer: CBS

The "$10,000 Pyramid," hosted by Dick Clark, premiered on CBS. It was a word-association game played by 2 teams, made up of one celebrity player and one civilian contestant. The object was to win the preliminary game, in order to go to "the winner's circle," for a chance to win "the big money." $10,000!
2. The celebrity players on the premiere week of "The "$10,000 Pyramid" were actress June Lockhart from "Lost in Space," and "Petticoat Junction," and which popular Emmy winner for Best Supporting Actor in a comedy series?

Answer: Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner helped a contestant win $10,000 in the very first "winner's circle" attempt on the very first episode. Network executives were ready to pull the plug on the show right then and there because it could have been perceived as having been rigged.

The producer, Bob Stewart, convinced the executives to allow them to complete the week of shows. It became one of the best-loved game shows of all time.
3. Running concurrently with the daytime "The $10,000 Pyramid" was the syndicated, once a week "The $25,000 Pyramid." Who hosted the syndicated "The $25,000 Pyramid"?

Answer: Bill Cullen

Bill Cullen, often a celebrity player on the daytime "The $10,000 Pyramid," and host of the original "The Price is Right," "3 on a Match," and "Eye Guess," hosted the weekly, nighttime "The $25,000 Pyramid."
4. In the "winner's circle round," the clue-giver needed to convey a list of clues that fit 6 subjects, one at a time. There were very strict rules the clue giver needed to follow. Which of the following is not a winner's circle rule?

Answer: No singing nor inflecting of voice

As the seasons went by, the rules in the winner's circle became tighter and more specific. Other no-nos: The use of synonyms or equivalent foreign words of the key words in the subject (the use of the clue "The leaning Tower of Pisa" for "Things that tilt" - leaning being a synonym for "tilt," or "chapeau" for "Kinds of hats" would be illegal clues); giving descriptive clues, for instance, if the subject was "Vitamins," the clue giver would be expected to say "C, B-12, etc.." They would be forbidden to describe vitamins ("They're pills you take in the morning.").
5. Billy Crystal is the all-time speed champion in the winner's circle, having taken a contestant up the Pyramid in how many seconds, out of 60?

Answer: 26

Billy Crystal was starring on the TV comedy series "Soap" when he broke the time record.
6. Billy Crystal holds the speed record in the winner's circle. What was the winning subject in that round?

Answer: Things that wilt

Billy only gave one clue for each of the six subjects. It was like watching a tennis game. He gave a clue. She gave the answer. He gave a clue. She gave the answer. etc. It is fun to watch.
7. In September of 1982, "The $25,000 Pyramid" was revived on CBS daytime, with Dick Clark as host once again. On the fourth week of this new version of "Pyramid", Betty White made her very first appearance. When she had her first $25,000 victory in the winner's circle, what strange thing happened?

Answer: She was not aware she had won

When Betty's contestant heard the theme music, she looked at Dick Clark and asked, "Did I win?" He told her "You won!" Betty was momentarily Bambi in the headlights.
8. Who was the original announcer on "The $10,000 Pyramid"?

Answer: Bob Clayton

Bob Clayton, host of "Concentration," was announcer of "The $10,000 Pyramid," until his death in 1979. He was replaced, alternately, by Allan Kalter (later of "The Late Show" with David Letterman) and Steve O'Brien.
9. "The $100,000 Pyramid" was a syndicated version which premiered in September of 1985. Three contestants were eventually invited to participate in a tournament for the $100,000. Who was invited to play in the tournament?

Answer: Won the winner's circle round in the shortest lengths of time

In the tournament, the first contestant to win in the winner's circle won the $100,000 and the tournament was over. The first tournament lasted nearly 2 weeks. It took 19 games before a contestant won, with the help of celebrity player Shelley Smith. Their winning subject was "Things that are warped."
10. Who hosted the short-lived version of "The $100,000 Pyramid" in 1991?

Answer: John Davidson

Donny Osmond later hosted "Pyramid" (with no money amount in the title), from 2002-2004. After Vicki Lawrence played her first round on this version of "Pyramid," Donny said to her, "That was a great job, Vicki!" (words to that effect), and she responded in her typical deadpan way by saying "Donny, I've been playing this game since before you were born."
