Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Simon takes a golfing break in the quiet English village of Cookham. His break is quickly interupted when he comes to the aid of insurance investigator Adrienne Halberd. Our hero uncovers a plot by an apparently loving husband to murder yet another wife for her riches by serving her a poisoned lamb casserole whilst dressed in drag as housemaid Mrs Jafferty.

Answer: "The Talented Husband"

This was the very first television episode (1962) to be broadcast. It varies from the novel written by Leslie Charteris in 1954 in that the novel concludes with our hero dressing in drag. This was a concept that the production team would not entertain for a pilot show of a series that they expected to (with accurate aforethought) do "big things". How times have changed! Shirley Eaton made the first of three saintly appearances as the insurance investigator.
2. Set in Mexico. An old friend of "The Saint", now blind, believes he can finally locate the treasures they had sought years before. He is guarded and tended by the beautiful Consuelo who believes his tale and hopes the find will help finance an operation to repair his eyesight. Simon steps in to investigate with alarming consequences.

Answer: "The Pearls of Peace"

Written in 1954 "The Pearls Of Peace" was published by Leslie Charteris as one short story in the 1958 collection entitled "Senor Saint". This 1962 television episode featured Erica Rogers in the first of several saintly episodes that she appeared in. It was also named by the author as one of the best "Saint" stories he had ever written.
3. Set in Spain. Simon agrees to do his friend a big favour by teaching his friend's wealthy, spoilt, selfish and rather brattish fiance a lesson in good citizenship. Hence our hero steals the girls cash and on the promise of providing financial asistance when she's short leads her on a 100 mile hike around Spain. During the course of this he delivers indignity, hardship and frustrations that ultimately bring her to comprehend the error of her ways and to create in her a better woman than she had previously been.

Answer: "The Golden Journey"

"The Golden Journey" was written in 1931 but not published until it appeared as a short story in "The Saint In Europe" in 1954. The small screen adaptation was in 1962 and starred Erica Rogers as the spoilt Belinda Dean. The original novel was set in Germany. Quite why the television production changed this to the Costa Brava remains a mystery. Perhaps the only "Saint" story written where Mr. Templar really doesn't care for the leading lady.
4. Set in London. "The Saint" discovers that his friend, a government official, is being blackmailed by a man known by a poisonous moniker. By what name was this arch villain known which leant itself to the episode title?

Answer: "The Scorpion"

"The Scorpion" was published as a short story in "The Saint Versus Scotland Yard" in 1932. The 1964 television episode featured the baby faced Dudley Sutton as the arch villain who was almost unrecognisable as "Tinker" in the much later series "Lovejoy". Incidentally Geoffrey Bayldon (Catweazle) featured in this episode as did a young Nyree Dawn Porter playing a blonde extortionist.
5. Set in Monte Carlo. "The Saint" gains the trust of deposed King Fallouda when he saves him from assasination at a casino. Having gained his trust the king asks him to recover some national jewels which will finance a revolt against the present ungodly rulers of his country. Adventure abounds.

Answer: "The Queens Ransom"

Dawn Adams makes a superb appearance as Queen Fallouda who Simon recognises as the former daughter of a London bus driver. He delights in winding her up every step of the way as they head off to recover the jewels. 1966 episode.
6. Simon takes on the identity of a Russian secret police chief. He works with distrust alongside Colonel Smolenko (Mary Peach) to discover who is killing off intelligence agents with novel methods.

Answer: "The Gadget Lovers"

Bert Kwouk (Colonel Wing) made an early appearance in this 1967 episode. The author of the work was disgusted by this screen adaptation and commented "how could a large bunch of Chinese men take over and inhabit a Swiss monastery without being noticed by any of the villagers? I wouldn't dare to leave such a hole unplugged in a book".
7. Set in Wales. Probably the most outrageous "Saint" story put to the small screen in which our hero battles mad scientists and giant ants who are destined to take over the world.

Answer: "The House on Dragons Rock"

A 1968 episode of a short story "The Man Who Liked Ants" which appeared in "The Happy Highwayman" in 1939. Remarkably the normally highly critical author, Leslie Charteris, gave this screen adaptation of his work a huge thumbs up. Annette Andre ("Randall and Hopkirk Deceased") and Talfyn Thomas ("Dad's Army") feature.
8. Simon experiences that a corrupt American attorney's clients escape conviction at court everytime that he defends them. Thus he applies himself to turning the tables on the ungodly attorney Carlton Rood (David Bauer).

Answer: "The Element of Doubt"

Set in America. This 1959 short story was published in "The Saint To The Rescue" before hitting the small screen in 1962. Despite breaking so many laws himself in the cause of what he deemed to be justice, he took such a dislike to corrupt practioners of the law, such as Carlton Rood, that he felt honour bound to remove them from the public domain of life.
9. "The Saint" is caught red handed stealing valuable jewellery by Chief Inspector Teal. Charged and convicted he is sent to prison. But it's a hoax as Simon is working at Teal's request to uncover an organisation that is charging inmates £50,000 to facilitate their release from incarceration. The episode culminates in a mid-English Channel battle between our hero and the mastermind of the scheme.

Answer: "The Escape Route"

The script involved the escapees climbing aboard a helicopter by way of a rope ladder. However permission to do that was needed from the Board of Trade. It was not forthcoming and so the script was amended to have the actors mounting it from the ground.

But Roger and another actor ran too fast and climbed into the helicopter when it was still two feet off the ground. As a result the pilot, Charles James, and the helicopter company, RBA Helicopters, were prosecuted in 1967 for "permitting an unauthorised drop from an aircraft". Each were fined £40 ($78 U.S.). One suspects that the Board of Trade viewer who launched the prosecution did not receive autographs!
10. Set in Paris, our hero saves the beautiful Natasha from being dragged into a car and kidnapped. At her home in the country she later explains that her family are about to sell 3 hitherto unknown Leonardo Da Vinci paintings smuggled out of Russia. Simon doesn't believe her especially when the dealer she is in negotiation with turns out not to be the famous dealer that Simon knows well. The paintings transpire to be the subject of Nazi war looting.

Answer: "The Art Collectors"

This 1967 episode featured Ann Bell as the principle lady and an early appearance by Peter Bowles. It was Charteris himself who persuaded the producers to switch to the looted Nazi treasures theme rather than a wholly Russian based storyline they had originally intended.
