Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the Stargate in Goa'uld?

Answer: Chaapa'ai

The Goa'uld name the Stargate "Chaapa'ai" which means the same thing. Throughout the series, whether characters call it "Chaapa'ai" or "Stargate" tells the viewers whether the characters are aligned with the Tauri or the System Lords.
2. How many symbols are on the inner ring on the Milky Way Stargates?

Answer: 39

There are 39 symbols on every Stargate. The symbols represent 38 constellations as seen from Earth plus a point of origin symbol that is unique for every planet.
3. Every DHD in the network has all the gate symbols.

Answer: False

Actually, every DHD has a "missing glyph" and thus only has 38 symbols on it. This missing glyph is not the point of origin for the planet however but makes it so certain addresses cannot be dialed from certain planets unless you have an alternative dialing device such as the SGC computer.
4. What is the function of the "hyperspatial buffer"?

Answer: Making sure only complete objects are sent through.

The hyperspatial buffer is what allows people to put their hand through the event horizon and be able to pull it back safely. It prevents incomplete objects or people from going through and being damaged or destroyed. Any incomplete objects are "stored" in the buffer in a sort of stasis.
5. How many symbols are on the inner ring of the Pegasus Stargates?

Answer: 36

There are less symbols on the Pegasus Stargates than there are on the Milky Way ones. This means there are less possible addresses to dial in Pegasus. The Atlantis Stargate is the only one that can establish a wormhole to Earth because of its control crystal.
6. What is the diameter of a Stargate?

Answer: 6.7 m

They are around 22 ft in diameter and are made of the alien mineral Naquadah.
7. What is the approximate weight of the Stargate?

Answer: 64000 lbs

This information was given in the episode "Redemption, Part 2" where it had to be strapped to a 302 and thrown into hyperspace so it would not explode on Earth. The Naquadah the gate is made of would have caused a catastrophic explosion that would have effectively destroyed the world!
8. Since "Spacegates" do not have an attached D.H.D, what powers them?

Answer: Three power nodes attached to the gate itself.

The spacegates get their power from power nodes attached to them. This allows the Wraith who do not use Ancient-made D.H.Ds to also use the spacegates. They are placed at 120 degrees intervals along the outer edge of the 'gate and are equipped with thrusters to help mantain the 'gate in orbit. Stargates in space only exist in the Pegasus Galaxy.
9. One of the functions of the D.H.D is to keep the Stargate network coordinates updated.

Answer: True

At programmed intervals, the D.H.D dials several nearby gates in order to alert other D.H.Ds of any chances in its coordinates due to planetary shift or a stargate being moved. In turn those D.H.Ds dial others and so on until all the gates in the network are adjusted. This is why the SGC computer needed the cartouche on Abydos and the D.H.Ds off-world did not.
10. Stargate travel is instantaneous.

Answer: False

It actually takes more or less 3 seconds to travel between two gates. The closer the gates are to each other, the shorter the trip. Between Earth and Abydos, it is indeed very close to instantaneous.
