Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, Sheldon and Leonard were seen assembling a model. Sheldon instructed, "Carbon. Hydrogen. Carbon. Carbon. And last, but not least, carbon." Leonard then replied sarcastically, "This might be the glue talking, but that was a very pleasurable 139 and half hours." What model were they assembling?

Answer: A DNA model

In the previous episode entitled "The Change Constant", Leonard vented his frustration with Sheldon, complaining that the DNA model had always been there in the living room and Sheldon forbade anyone to touch it. Leonard touched the model and the pieces fell.

The 139.5 hours mentioned by Leonard was a reference to the approximate total runtime of all the 279 episodes of "The Big Bang Theory" that were aired over the past 12 seasons (2007 - 2019). Each episode has a run time of 30 minutes (including commercials), which adds up to a total of 139.5 hours.
2. Before departing to Sweden, Raj asked for Bert's help to take care of his dog, a Yorkshire Terrier. Raj told Bert, "And please, if you have any problems, any questions, call me immediately. She's my baby." Bert then jokingly replied, "It shouldn't come up, but just in case, where could I buy a dog that looks exactly like her? Kidding. If she dies, I'll just tell you." What was Raj's dog's name?

Answer: Cinnamon

Raj's dog, Cinnamon, was a gift from Howard and Bernadette. Cinnamon made its first appearance in the show in an episode in season five entitled "The Transporter Malfunction".

Cinnamon, a Yorkshire Terrier, was the only non-human recurring character in "The Big Bang Theory". The dog was featured in several episodes in season 5 - 12.
3. Before heading to the airport, Sheldon and Amy conducted a briefing to their friends. Sheldon turned to Amy and asked, "Amy, why don't you kick us off?" Amy then briefed her friends merrily, "Thank you. The challenging climate of ___ has left its mark on the Swedish character. Those dour latter-day Vikings are slow to warm up to strangers, but if you follow a few easy steps a Swede can be your friend for life." What is the missing word?

Answer: Scandinavia

Sheldon, Amy, and their friends were flying to Stockholm, Sweden, for the Nobel Prize award ceremony.

"The Big Bang Theory" is known for its clever episode titles, which are scientific wordplays and puns. The series finale episode is the only episode in the entire series that is named after an actual scientific concept. Its title, "The Stockholm Syndrome" is a reference to the venue of the Nobel Prize award ceremony. In addition, the title could also imply how the group was "held captive" by Sheldon and how they had tolerated Sheldon's quirkiness over the past 12 seasons.

In psychology, Stockholm syndrome refers to a paradoxical situation where hostages develop bonds with their captors. The term was coined by the media in 1973, following the event of a bank robbery that took place at the Norrmalmstorg square, Stockholm, Sweden. After the hostages were released, they were reluctant to testify against their captor.
4. The elevator in Sheldon's apartment was finally fixed! Nonetheless, while heading to the airport, Sheldon and his friends did not use the elevator, as they had too much luggage. Which character, who drove Sheldon to work throughout the series, came up with the idea of putting all the luggage in the elevator and to have everyone walk down the stairs instead?

Answer: Leonard

In one scene of the episode, a helpless Bernadette, trapped behind the pile of luggage in the elevator, shouted, "Help me! Help me!" Leonard then came up with the idea of having everyone walk down the stairs while the luggage was being transported down the apartment in the elevator. Sheldon commented, "Well done. You know you're proving to be an invaluable part of my entourage."

The elevator was fixed in the previous episode with a paradoxical title -- "The Change Constant". What was even more paradoxical was the fact that Sheldon and his friends decided to walk down the stairs even though the elevator was fixed.
5. When Sheldon commented that his friends were being incredibly selfish, he asked Amy furiously, "How can you call them friends when they're abandoning us?" A displeased Amy told Sheldon brutally, "They're abandoning us because you broke their hearts." Sheldon responded, "I didn't mean to." To which Amy replied, "I know! You never mean to! That's the only reason people tolerate you." Sheldon then asked, "Does that include you?" What was Amy's reply?

Answer: "Sometimes, yeah."

In this scene, Sheldon said angrily, "Well, I hate to say it, but I think everyone is being incredibly selfish." Amy then explained, "Sheldon, no one is happier than I am to win the Nobel. But, it's not more important than our friends." Amy then told Sheldon the brutal truth that their friends knew that Sheldon never meant to break their hearts and that was the only reason that they were tolerating him.

This scene was one of the most powerful and poignant scenes in the entire series. It was also the only scene in the entire series that did not include a joke and/or a laugh track.
6. During the much-anticipated Nobel Prize award ceremony, the announcer announced the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics. "And in the field of physics, Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler and Dr. Sheldon Cooper, for their discovery of ___." Which scientific theory was proposed by Amy and Sheldon?

Answer: Super-asymmetry

Amy and Sheldon's scientific breakthrough, featured in the series, was very similar to Marie and Pierre Curie's discovery in real life. Both teams were couples, and they won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Pierre Curie, Marie Curie, and Henri Becquerel won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for their extraordinary works on radioactivity.

The super-asymmetry theory that was featured in the series was a fictional theory. However, there is a conjecture called supersymmetry in the field of particle physics. The conjecture relates two classes of elementary particles -- bosons and fermions.
7. Receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics award, Sheldon began his acceptance speech by mentioning that the honor didn't just belong to him. He continued, "I wouldn't be up here if it weren't for some very important people in my life, beginning with my mother, father, Meemaw, brother, and sister. And my other family, who I'm so happy to have here with us." He then stopped abruptly when he noticed a celebrity in the audience. He pointed and asked, "Is that ___?" Which TV series character did Sheldon spot?

Answer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Raj previously noticed the actress Sarah Michelle Gellar on the aeroplane. She played the titular character in the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Sarah guest-starred as herself in the series finale episode of "The Big Bang Theory".

Bret Harrison played the character of Sam in the TV series "Reaper" (2007-2009). In "Supernatural" (2005-2020), the character of Dean Winchester was played by the actor Jensen Ackles. Jennifer Love Hewitt played the character of Melinda in the TV series "Ghost Whisperer" (2005-2010).

The show has featured many celebrated scientists as guest stars throughout the series. They include Buzz Aldrin (astronaut), Frances Arnold (Nobel laureate, Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2018), Stephen Hawking (physicist and cosmologist), Elon Musk (technology entrepreneur), George Smoot (Nobel laureate - Nobel Prize in Physics, 2016), Kip Thorne (Nobel laureate, Nobel Prize in Physics, 2017), Neil deGrasse Tyson (astrophysicist), and Steve Wozniak (technology entrepreneur).
8. In his acceptance speech, Sheldon expressed his gratitude to his dear friends. "I have been encouraged, sustained, inspired, and tolerated, not only by my wife, but by the greatest group of friends anyone ever had." Acknowledging Penny and Leonard, Sheldon continued, "And my two dearest friends in the world, Penny Hofstadter and Dr. Leonard Hofstadter. I was there the moment Leonard and Penny met. He said to me that their babies would be ___ and beautiful, and now that they're expecting, I have no doubt that will be the case." What is the missing word?

Answer: smart

The description "smart and beautiful" was a reference to the exact same quote featured in the series' pilot episode. Referring to Penny, Sheldon asked Leonard, "You're not done with her, are you?" A happy Leonard then told Sheldon, "Our babies will be smart and beautiful." To which Sheldon replied, "Not to mention imaginary."

The two main characters of the show, Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, and Leonard Hofstadter, played by Johnny Galecki, were named after Sheldon Leonard (1907-1977), a celebrated film and television actor, director, producer, and writer. He appeared in "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), as a bartender.
9. The character of Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, had the series' first and final lines. The last words in the series, featured in the series finale, were "Howard, Bernadette, Raj, Penny, Leonard, I apologize if I haven't been the friend you deserve. But, I want you to know, that in my way, I love you all." Sheldon turned to Amy and said, "And I love you." Sheldon then faced the audience, and uttered the final two words in the series. What were the two words?

Answer: Thank you!

The first words of the series, featured in "Pilot", being "So if a photon is directed through a plane with two slits in it and either slit is observed, it will not go through both slits. If it's unobserved, it will. However, if it's observed after it's left the plane, but before it hits its target, it will not have gone through both slits." The scientific explanation was said by Sheldon, to which Leonard asked, "Agreed, what's your point?" Sheldon then replied, "There's no point, I just think it's a good idea for a T-shirt."

"Bazinga!" was Sheldon's catchphrase in the series. "Soft Kitty" was the name of a song featured in the show. Whenever Sheldon was sick, he would like someone to sing the song for him. The lyrics of the song go, "Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur! Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purr!"

The four main male cast members -- Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj, had appeared in every episodes (279 of them!) of the series.
10. The final scene of the episode, and the entire series, featured Sheldon, Amy, Leonard, Penny, Howard, Bernadette, and Raj, in Leonard's apartment. As they chatted, the series' theme song played in the background. What are the two missing words in the lyrics of the song? "Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state. Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait. The earth began to cool, the autotrophs began to drool. Neanderthals developed tools. We built a wall, we built the pyramids. Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries. That all started with the ___!"

Answer: big bang

The series' theme song, entitled "Big Bang Theory Theme" (also known as "History of Everything" in other sources), was written and recorded by Canadian alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies.

The band's singer, Ed Robertson recorded an acoustic version of the song, with a slower tempo, for the show's series finale episode. In the final scene, Sheldon and his friends were seen chatting while having their meals in Leonard's apartment.
