Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the very first scene, a man wearing a sheriff's uniform reaches a gas station where there are only abandoned cars and dead bodies. He steps out of his car and soon comes across a little girl. What does the man do after the girl turns around toward him?

Answer: He shoots her.

"The Walking Dead" starts with a bang, quite literally. Rick Grimes, played masterfully by Andrew Lincoln, is a deputy Sheriff in Georgia. In this first scene, he steps out of his car looking for gas and he comes across a little girl. Rick calls to her, thinking she's only a girl, but when she turns around it is revealed that her face is decaying and she is in fact a walker, which is the de facto term for zombies in this show.

As the walker starts reaching for him, Rick reaches for his gun and with a mixture of reluctance and fear on his face, he pulls the trigger. Overall, it is a powerful first scene that sets the tone for "The Walking Dead".
2. Let's rewind time a little bit. Rick Grimes, the protagonist, wakes up from a coma to find himself all alone in a hospital room. But what was it that caused Rick to become comatose in the first place?

Answer: Gunshot wound

Let's rewind time again (last time, I promise!). Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes and his partner Shane Walsh, played by Jon Bernthal, are discussing their girl troubles when they are dispatched to assist with a car pursuit. They help set up a roadblock, and soon a gunfight occurs. One of the perpetrators crawls out of the flipped car and manages to shoot Rick in the back, wounding him severely in the process. Rick loses consciousness, and next time he wakes up he is in the hospital.

After a few disorienting moments, he realises that an undisclosed amount of time has passed (ranging from weeks to a few months) and that the hospital has been abandoned... by living things anyway.
3. After Rick gets over the initial shock of waking up from a coma and finding out about the zombie-like walkers, he leaves the hospital. Where does he head to first?

Answer: His home

Rick is a family man, so the first place he heads to after leaving the hospital is naturally his home. Once he reaches there, he looks for his wife and son, but does not find them. The sequence from Rick's waking up scene up to the point where he is crying on the floor of his house after not finding his family is a testament to Andrew Lincoln's acting. Rick wakes up, and his initial disorientation soon turns to horror after he sees the first bodies and comes across the walkers. Without a single soul in sight, he finds a bike and rushes to his home.

However, within moments of entering he realises his family are not there and breaks down in tears, hitting his forehead with his hand in an attempt to wake up from this living nightmare.
4. Rick finally meets living people again, a man named Morgan and his son Duane. Which of the following does NOT happen during their rather eventful first meeting?

Answer: Rick and Morgan shake hands.

Rick is sitting outside his home in a somewhat delirious state, when he sees a man walking slowly down the street. A sound makes him turn around just in time for a shovel to hit him in the face. The boy wielding the shovel calls to his father, while Rick in his delirium calls the boy 'Carl' (his son's name).

The boy's father enters the scene and shoots the walker that Rick mistook for a man. He then walks over and asks Rick in a threatening tone how he got his wound. The strike from the shovel proves too much for the already weakened Rick however, who faints just in time.

After he regains consciousness, the introductions take place as Morgan (Lennie James) is sufficiently convinced that Rick's wound will not cause him to become a walker.
5. Morgan explains about the walkers to Rick as they sit down for dinner. According to Morgan, light draws their attention, but sound doesn't.

Answer: False

Morgan and Duane have taken up residence in an abandoned house, and now Rick has joined them. Morgan and Duane have covered up the windows so the walkers out on the street won't be drawn to the light of candles. According to Morgan, however, sound is what really draws the walkers' attention, even more than light.

He regrets shooting that walker earlier because it drew a lot of walkers to the street. As they have dinner, the two men exchange stories and Morgan introduces Rick to the term 'walkers' and their behaviour.

He warns Rick not to get bit or scratched, because that will cause him to have a fever and then die before returning as a walker. As Morgan delicately puts it, "if this is the first you're hearing it, I know how it must sound".
6. After recuperating for one night, the following day Rick takes Morgan and Duane to the police station to pick up some guns and ammo. What else do they get the chance to do while they're there?

Answer: Have a shower

Ah, how quickly civilisation collapses when the zombie apocalypse hits. Communications have been shut down and there seems to be no heating or running water. The police station has its own line though, so Rick, Morgan and Duane take advantage of the opportunity so they can shower. Morgan has informed Rick of a refugee center in Atlanta with military protection and food, so Rick decides to look for his family there.

When the time for goodbyes comes, Rick gives Morgan a walkie-talkie and promises to turn his own radio on every day at dawn, in case they want to communicate.
7. As he is driving towards the refugee center, Rick uses the radio to try and come into contact with anyone out there. Which person familiar to him tries to answer, but cannot get through to Rick?

Answer: His partner Shane

A group of survivors receives Rick's broadcast, but when they try to answer him the signal is lost. Shane arrives and makes another attempt to communicate, while Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) are among the onlookers, not knowing that it was Rick on the other end.

The group of survivors discuss their need to warn people to stay away from Atlanta, indicating that the refugee center there is not working after all. Leon, a co-worker of Rick and Shane, was not among the camp as he had a become a walker who was killed by Rick.
8. Lori and Shane are having an argument when suddenly she storms off the main camp. Shane follows her into her tent, where he calms her down and they kiss.

Answer: True

The pair are arguing about putting up warning signs on the highway so travelers will know not to go to Atlanta. When Shane prohibits Lori from going by herself, she walks off the camp. He follows Lori into the tent and explains to her that she shouldn't go because of Carl, her son with Rick.

They kiss but quickly break apart when Carl approaches. Although details are not given on when Shane and Lori got together, they believe that Rick is dead, implying that they are comforting each other over their mutual loss.

But since is still Rick alive, this is a situation that will be the cause of a lot of friction down the road. Let it never be said that "The Walking Dead" is only about zombies.
9. After his car runs out of gas, Rick abandons it and walks into a farm. What alternative means of transportation does he find there?

Answer: A horse

At this point the timeline has surpassed the opening scene. Rick no longer has his car, so when he finds a farm whose owners committed suicide, he goes looking around. Ricks finds a perfectly healthy horse, which he proceeds to trick by claiming there will be food, safety and even other horses in Atlanta.
10. Rick finally reaches Atlanta, but nothing there is as he imagined it. He quickly finds himself surrounded by walkers and is about to be eaten. How does he escape?

Answer: He climbs into a tank.

As soon as he reaches Atlanta, Rick finds out it is an empty city. Much like his own town, there is not a single living person in the vicinity. Rick follows the overhead sound of a helicopter, but as he leads his horse around a corner they run into a street full of walkers. Rick turns the horse around immediately, but the horde follows them and walkers from other directions block their path. Rick falls from the poor horse, which promptly becomes a meal for the walkers, while Rick loses his bag of guns and crawls under a tank to save his own life.

When the walkers crawl under the tank as well, Rick almost shoots himself, but at the last second he notices an open hatch, and quickly climbs in the tank. However, Rick soon realises that even though the walkers can't get inside, he can't go outside either.

As the panic starts to rise again, a voice speaks to Rick through the tank's radio. Enter Glenn.
