Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first season of "The Witcher" is based on which Polish author's short stories "The Last Wish" and "Sword of Destiny"?

Answer: Andrzej Sapkowski

Season one of "The Witcher" premiered on Netflix in 2019 and it was based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski. By the time of the show's premiere, Sapkowski had written six novels and fifteen short stories in "The Witcher" series with the first short story being published in 1986. In addition to the popular Netflix TV series, Sapkowski's "The Witcher" series was adapted into a series of critically and commercially successful video games.

This question was wished and destined into the quiz by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
2. What actor known for playing the character Superman in several films starred as the title character on the tv series "The Witcher" which premiered in 2019?

Answer: Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill is an avid gamer and opted to take on the role of Geralt in the TV series because of his immersion in "The Witcher" video games. In addition to Superman in the DC franchise, Cavill has played other classic heroes, including Sherlock Homes (in "Enola Holmes") and Solo in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.". He was born on the Channel Island, Jersey, in 1983. While playing rugby as a schoolboy, he met Russell Crowe who was filming on location at the school - this may have jumpstarted his enthusiasm for acting as a career.

This question was offered up by player pusdoc, who was born in the other Jersey, stateside.
3. On the pilot episode of "The Witcher", Stregobor desires to have Geralt kill Renfri. What unique situation regarding Renfri's birth makes Stregobor believe her to be evil and want to kill her?

Answer: She was born during an eclipse.

Renfri is the eldest daughter of Fredefalk, the Prince of Creyden. She was born during an eclipse event known as the Black Sun, which carries a curse that affects girls born. According to a prophesy, the girls born during the eclipse would bring about the end of human civilization.
Renfri's tale is similar to Snow White in that her stepmother, Aridea, used a mirror to prophesize about her step daughter. But where Snow white was good, the mirror claimed Renfri was evil. The sorcerer, Stregobor, investigates and initially just wants to isolate her. But eventually Aridea convinces him and they conspire to hire Geralt to kill Renfri and stop the prophesy.

Phoenix Rising's Red Crew had their resident witch, leith90, conjure up this question.
4. In episode two, "Four Marks", Geralt is captured and taken to a mountain cave where he meets a king named Filavandrel. What was Filavandrel, a race known for their long hair and ears?

Answer: Elf

Filavandrel is King of the Elves. In "The Witcher", elves are tall and skinny with pointy ears and long hair. They are considered a humanoid race and have longevity as compared to humans. After some discussion, Filavandrel agrees with Geralt that he should lead the elves out of the caves and reestablish somewhere where they can prosper again. The role of Filavandrel was played by Tom Canton.

Phoenix Rising's Red Crew member jaknginger will stick with the humans.
5. Yennefer completes her transformation into a beautiful sorceresses in episode three, "Betrayer Moon". What does she have to give up in order to change her body into her ideal image?

Answer: Her fertility

Yennefer is tasked to return to her homeland, Aedirn, but wants to return as a very different looking person, but Tissaia and Stregobor interfere and her assignment is changed to Nilfgaard. Yennefer decides to take what she feels she is owed and manages to get Giltine, an enchanter to make her beautiful. She opts to refuse numbing agents and denies herself sleep in order for the process to be as quick as possible. Quick but incredibly painful. The procedure requires her reproductive organs to be removed to be made into a magical salve to begin her transformation. When she returns as a stunning new woman, the king of Aedirn sees her and insists on her being 'his' sorceress.

Red team's smpdit decides that she will stay looking like she is.
6. In Season One of "The Witcher", a character idolizes Geralt and is begrudgingly allowed to accompany him on missions. Who is this character who sings the catchy song "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher"?

Answer: Jaskier

Jaskier means 'dandelion' in Polish and he is also known as the Sandpiper. His proper name is Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove. He became a bard and minstrel in his late teens. Jaskier gets into several scrapes and needs rescuing often. He has a habit of seducing the lovers of other nobles, which doesn't always end well. On the Netflix series, the actor Joey Batey portrays Jaskier.

This question was penned by player pusdoc, who would also like to play the lute.
7. Geralt is destined to be the caregiver for a little girl named Ciri who possesses magical powers. In the fourth and seventh episodes, what custom does Geralt invoke to claim his wardship over Ciri?

Answer: Law of Surprise

In "The Witcher" universe the Law of Surprise dictates that when one is saved by another the saved person is indebted to their savior. Geralt had previously saved Duny's life and thus Geralt invoked the Law of Surprise to claim his right to Duny and Pavetta's child, Ciri. The second time Geralt invoked the Law of Surprise was after saving the life of a traveling merchant named Yurga whose wife had taken Ciri in as an orphan.

This question was invoked into the quiz by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
8. Geralt and Yennefer meet for the first time in episode five, "Bottled Appetites". What creature does Geralt capture and have wishes granted to cure his insomnia and save Yennefer's life?

Answer: Djinn

A Djinn is an elemental Genie of Air, who, if captured, must grant three wishes. Geralt wants only to cure his insomnia, but like all genie tales, people become greedy. Jaskier tries to take the Djinn for himself but ends up getting cursed. Then Yennifer tries to bind the Djinn to herself, but becomes mortally affected, so Geralt uses his final wish to free the Djinn thus releasing Yennifer.

Confused yet? Basically, people become greedy and good wins out over evil. Phoenix Rising's Red Crew member leith90 was certainly confused, but she can tell you that the butler did it and wrote this question.
9. A character named Borch is introduced in episode six, "Rare Species". What precious item does Borch shapeshift to protect along with the help of Geralt and Yennefer?

Answer: Dragon egg

Borch Three Jackdaws, who appears as an elderly man, asks Geralt to accompany him on a hunt for a green dragon that has been laying waste to the countryside. Geralt is reluctant to comply but changes his mind when he finds that Yennefer is part of the party. Geralt explains there are three common dragons: green, red and black and he mentions that gold dragons were most likely mythical. He is generally against killing intelligent creatures such as dragons. As they continue on the hunt they find that the green dragon was protecting her offspring, a dragon egg. The group are then surprised by the arrival of Villentretenmerth, a golden dragon, the sire of the egg, he then reveals he is Borch, a shapeshifter.

Red team's smpdit has always wanted to meet a real life dragon, whatever colour it happened to be.
10. The season finale, "Much More" depicts a battle between Yennefer's mages and the Nilfgaardian army. Ciri is able to escape from the battle and heeding her grandmother's advice, seeks out Geralt of Rivia. What question does she ask him they meet?

Answer: Who is Yennefer?

Ciri's grandmother, Calanthe, was the queen of Cintra and was loved by her people because of her bravery. Facing certain death at the hands of the Nilfgaardians, Calanthe commands Ciri to find Geralt of Rivia knowing that he will protect her as commanded by the Law of Surprise. Shortly after Calanthe jumps to her death rather than be taken prisoner and tortured. When Ciri finds Geralt he is having a dream and calling out for Yennefer prompting Ciri to ask him "Who is Yennefer" when he wakes up. The season ends at this point.

This question was written with sage advice from Calanthe by Phoenix Rising teammate and Red Crew member Triviaballer as part of the team's 2022 World Tour.
