Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All the characters in 'Willo the Wisp' are voiced by a 'Carry On...' star. Who?

Answer: Kenneth Williams

Kenneth Williams voices eight regular characters, including Carwash the cat, and a Twit, a bird who only ever says 'Twit!'. Many other characters appear in one or two episodes, but each is instantly distinctive as Williams swaps personas.
2. Which character introduces each episode?

Answer: Willo the Wisp

Willo the Wisp is drawn to look quite like Kenneth Williams, and his nosey, self-important manner caricatures Williams' own. A will-o'-wisp is a glowing dancing light seen in a marsh or forest, and held in legend to be a kind of ghost, or to be created by fairies. Willo the Wisp's glowing, amorphous body depicts this.
3. The real star of the series is Mavis Cruet, the fairy. What does she wear throughout the series?

Answer: Short pink dress

Although the cartoon often pictures Mavis as a tragic figure, in reality it is impossible not to empathise with her. She is dressed for the top of the Christmas tree, but knows who she is and what she wants to be, and never gives up on her aims.
4. Another star of the show is Evil Edna, a wicked witch in the form of what?

Answer: A television

Evil Edna is highly irritable and at various times turns most of the other characters into frogs, or torments them in other ways. Occasionally, she ends up suffering, particularly when she is impounded for not paying her TV licence fee!
5. The final main character is Arthur. What type of animal is the none-too-bright orange creature?

Answer: Caterpillar

Arthur is eager to change into a moth, but sadly the transformation never comes. In the meantime, he manages to learn lots of useless facts and patronise Mavis, but essentially he is good-hearted.
6. At the start of most episodes, we are told the action takes place in which silvan location?

Answer: Doyley Wood

Occasionally, the characters leave the wood, but they always return to their home by the end of the show.
7. In 'The Bridegroom', Mavis is set to marry a handsome prince. Why does the match fall apart?

Answer: Mavis can't stand his inability to pronounce his 'R's

Evil Edna does turn the prince into 'the Beast', but Mavis nonetheless declares she likes the look of him! Only when he starts to speak does she go off the idea - for her, personality outweighs appearance every time.
8. In 'Stick', Moog the dog gets a stick stuck in his mouth. What is Mavis' inspired solution?

Answer: Go away on holiday

Mavis' magic is unpredictable at the best of times, so she decides they should go on holiday and forget about it, because 'Often, if you forget about things, they go away without you noticing'!
9. How many people, on average, tuned in to watch the first showing of 'Willo the Wisp'?

Answer: 8,200,000

A huge average of 8.2 million people watched each episode of 'Willo the Wisp' in 1982, when it was first shown. Given that it was a new children's programme shown in the afternoon, this was a huge UK audience.
10. How many episodes of 'Willo the Wisp' were made?

Answer: 26

Only 26 episodes were made. At just under five minutes each, this means only two hours of this classic cartoon exists!
