Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reader of tarot cards
Answer: Aunt Agatha
Aunt Agatha never married because she never met the man who could get the better of her. Although she brandished a pistol in one episode, Agatha used words as her weapons. And she was REALLY good at it. She wasn't bad with the tarot cards either, although she only ever foresaw doom and gloom. Unfortunately, there was plenty of that in the Poldark family.
2. Eloped with a sea captain
Answer: Verity
Practical, sensible, capable Verity was precious to her family because of her abilities and her cool, level head. It was a surprise to everyone when she fell in love with Captain Blamey, despite his "skeleton in his closet". Their courtship had ramifications for the family in a number of ways.
3. Married the Poldark family's archenemy
Answer: Elizabeth
Once a Poldark herself by marriage, the former Elizabeth Chynoweth escaped widowhood by becoming the wife of ruthless banker-later-turned-corrupt-official George Warleggan. George moved in to the ancestral Poldark home, Trenwith, and the war between the Warleggan and Poldark families was on! George was the grandson of a blacksmith, and was forever eaten up by jealousy of the genteel-class Poldarks, particularly Ross...and the marriage resulted in George and Ross being neighbours.
Not a good situation, that.
4. Former kitchen maid
Answer: Demelza
A ragged young boy, along with a dog called Garrick, were rescued by Ross Poldark at the Redruth Fair. But no, wait...it wasn't a boy at all, but a barely-teenaged girl in her brother's clothing. Ross thought twice about sending young Demelza Carne back to her abusive father, and engaged her at his Nampara House as a kitchen maid/farm worker. Demelza was the best thing ever to happen to Nampara, and ultimately the best thing ever to happen to Ross.
In a couple of short years she grew to be a lovely young woman, the wife of Ross and the mistress of Nampara House.
5. Saved her sweetheart from execution
Answer: Morwenna
Morwenna Chynoweth was the daughter of a dean, raised to be a lady. When she came to Trenwith House to be a governess to her cousin Geoffrey Charles, Morwenna and Drake Carne, Demelza's brother, fell in love despite the difference between their social classes. Morwenna was cornered into marrying the sleaziest clergyman in Cornwall to save Drake from death on the gallows...for a crime that he did not commit.
6. Blackmailed her clergyman brother-in-law
Answer: Rowella
A mysterious character indeed was Rowella! She never verbalized her motives, and Poldark fans are left to wonder why she seduced her sister Morwenna's husband and blackmailed him with threats of a letter to the bishop. Was she trying to save Morwenna from his unwanted attentions? Or did she simply want money for a dowry to bring to her own marriage? Either way, Rowella was a strategic young lady. (By the way, this quiz writer's opinion is that Rowella's motives were Both of the Above.)
7. Half of a wife-and-husband servant team
Answer: Prudie
Prudie was quite a character. She was first seen in the beginning of the series when Ross returned to Cornwall from the American Revolution. Prudie and her husband Jud had worked for Ross' father for years, but had left Nampara House to rack and ruin after his death. And the arrival of a new, competent kitchen maid didn't make her happy at all! Over the years Prudie's importance to the family, and her friendship with the kitchen girl who would become the lady of the house, strengthened and deepened.
8. Heiress and benefactress
Answer: Caroline
Caroline Penvennen was to be a lady of means when she came of age, and she was expected to marry a gentleman and hopefully one with a title. Although she loved and respected her uncle/guardian, this was one of his wishes that she had no intention of fulfilling. Especially not after she met the new, innovative and compassionate doctor in town! Caroline talked at times as though she did not care for the common working person, but she used her money and her influence to make their lives better.
She also stepped in at the last minute to be an unexpected help to the Poldark family.
9. Travelling actress
Answer: Keren
Keren was a drama queen both on and off the stage. Her presence in the story was not a long one but she was around long enough to break the heart of a miner, lead a doctor astray and wreak havoc in the mining community. She was first seen as a travelling performer, and it would have been better off for everyone in the vicinity of Sawle if she had simply kept on travelling.
10. Tavern wench
Answer: Mariette
Mariette was not a principal character, but she represented a stormy period in time that affected the course of history--not to mention the Poldark family. She came into the story when Ross Poldark had cause to go over to France during the brutal Revolution of that country.
Some need for diplomacy, quick thinking and equally quick getaways were needed when Mariette and her compatriots became suspicious of the Cornishman's presence.
