Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A street-wise alley cat ruled the neighbourhood in this animated show based on a comic.

Answer: Heathcliff

Two seasons of 'Heathcliff' aired between 1980 and 1981, totaling 26 episodes. In the first season, Heathcliff had a segment, and then Dingbat and the Creeps had a segment. In the second season, Dingbat and the Creeps had been replaced by the clumsy Great Dane, Marmaduke.

The series then came back in 1984, running in syndication until 1988. Mel Blanc did the voice over for the Heathcliff character in both cases, who was based on a comic of the same name by George Gately.
2. In this family-friendly Canadian documentary series, dogs were shown working hard in a myriad of different every-day roles.

Answer: Dogs With Jobs

'Dogs With Jobs' ran between 2000-2004 and had five seasons with a total of 65 episodes. It featured all sorts of dogs: police, service, therapy dogs etc. It was considered to be a wholesome and uplifting show; although the premise was about the jobs the dogs did, all that was never far from the love dogs and people mutually have for each other.
3. Doctor Who's robotic canine friend featured in this British-Australian spin off aimed at young adults.

Answer: K-9

A single series of 'K-9' - which sounds out 'canine' - was released between 2009 and 2010. He had also been a central character in the 'K-9 and Company' and 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' spinoff series. The K-9 depicted in this show is visually quite different to that seen in the original show, as the BBC owned the visual rights to the character despite co-creator Bob Baker owning the character rights.
4. This extremely long-lived show featured a faithful Rough Collie and her adventures, often in rural communities.

Answer: Lassie

'Lassie' was so long-lived that it almost managed 600 episodes, stopping just short at 591. Its episodes originally released between 1954 and 1973, and it ran in black and white until 1965. Despite Lassie being a female dog in the fictional canon, she was primarily played by male dogs: Pal (the original who also starred in several films) and many of his male descendants.
5. Rusty and his German Shepherd dog were adopted by the troops at Fort Apache in this black-and-white American kids' TV show.

Answer: The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin

Five seasons of this show were aired between 1954 and 1959 on the ABC network. Rin Tin Tin was a real dog who had been adopted after World War I and had been a star in 27 silent films. One of his descendants had been considered for 'The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin', but didn't test well enough to make the cut. Since the show used relatively few actors, they would often have to play multiple roles within the same episodes.
6. In this British TV show, three badly-behaved dogs an episode were introduced to tough and uncompromising dog trainers.

Answer: Dog Borstal

The show first aired in 2006 on BBC Three, a network known for its reality TV show and 'lighter' titles. The word 'borstal' has been used to describe youth detention centers in the UK. Although the show often boasted a tough image with its trainers almost acting like army officers, it was typically the dog owners who would get dressed down rather than the dogs themselves.
7. A Mexican-American dog trainer would try to rehabilitate dogs with issues like barking or aggression in this reality series.

Answer: Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan

This show ran between 2004 and 2012 for nine seasons. Cesar Millan would focus on exercise, discipline and affection, as well as making sure the dog knew who the 'pack leader' was. He advised viewers 'not to try this at home', encouraging the seeking out of a professional if they themselves have dog issues. Professionals themselves sometimes had mixed views on the show, acknowledging that some of the tips and advice were good, but that his attitudes towards dominance were outdated.
8. Made by the producers of 'Supernanny', Victoria Stilwell used positive reinforcement to promote prudent dog ownership in this originally British show.

Answer: It's Me or the Dog

This show first aired in the UK between 2005 and 2008, and in the US between 2008 and 2012. The show is similar in format to Jo Frost's 'Supernanny'. There is an observation phase, a phase where Victoria teaches the household skills to train their dog, and a phase where she goes away and sees if they can keep up a good relationship with the dog.

In contrast to Cesar Millan, Stilwell tried to use positive reinforcement - where the dog is rewarded when it does the desired thing - over dominance.
9. This live-action series was loosely based on a Jack London novel, featuring Matt Scott and his adopted Alaskan Malamute.

Answer: White Fang

The only season of this show first aired between 1993 and 1994 in Canada, France and New Zealand. In the first episode, Fang was used as a fighting dog in illegal settings, and was integrated into Matt Scott's family when they rescued him. Over the course of the series, the pair met a number of other animals, some friendly and some not. Camping and exploration in the wilderness were also common themes.
10. In this Austrian-Italian comedy-drama series, a dog was the real star within a three-man homicide unit.

Answer: Inspector Rex

'Inspector Rex' was a long-lived show which first aired in Austria between 1994 and 2004 as 'Kommissar Rex', then from 2008 to 2015 as 'Il Commissario Rex' in Italy. Rex, a German Shepherd dog, was both cute and cunning as he would often outsmart antagonists who would underestimate him. Multiple theme tunes were used for the show, all which extolled the virtues of Rex.
