Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Archie Bunker's long-suffering wife, played by Jean Stapleton, in the 1970s TV sitcom "All in the Family"?

Answer: Edith

Born in October 1927 in New York NY, Edith Baines married Archie Bunker in 1946. Edith died of a stroke (off camera) in 1980 during the premiere episode (entitled "Archie Alone") of the second season of the "All in the Family" spinoff, "Archie Bunker's Place".
2. The UK soap "Emmerdale" is set in a village of the same name (although originally called Beckindale). In which English national park is the village located?

Answer: Yorkshire Dales

First airing in 1972 as "Emmerdale Farm", the series name was abbreviated to "Emmerdale" in 1989. The fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales where the series is set was originally called Beckindale, but that was also changed to Emmerdale, in 1994.
Although it lies within the boundaries of the historic county of Yorkshire, the national park now spans the redrawn county line between North Yorkshire and Cumbria. Created as a national park in 1954, it is now one of 15 such sites in England.
3. The 295th and final episode of which classic UK TV sitcom that first aired in 1973 was broadcast on August 29, 2010?

Answer: Last of the Summer Wine

Created and written by Roy Clarke, "Last of the Summer Wine" first appeared on UK TV in January 1973 as an episode of "Comedy Playhouse". The first episode of the series proper was broadcast later that same year, on November 12. Almost 37 years later, after 31 series and a total of 295 episodes, the final show aired on BBC1 in August 2010 -- the longest run ever by a sitcom on UK TV to this point. Peter Sallis, who played Norman "Cleggy" Clegg, was the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes.
4. In the 1960s US TV sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie", what was the name of the astronaut (played by Larry Hagman) who became Jeannie's master?

Answer: Tony Nelson

The one-man capsule carrying astronaut Tony Nelson, a captain in the U.S. Air Force, landed on a deserted Pacific island far from the planned location. Finding a bottle on the beach, Nelson pulled out the stopper and thus released the 2,000-year old genie (Barbara Eden). Thus began the adventures of "I Dream of Jeannie" in September 1965. The alternatives are all major characters from US sitcoms: Darrin Stephens was played by first by Dick York and then by Dick Sargent in "Bewitched"; Rob Petrie was the star of the "Dick van Dyke Show", played by van Dyke himself, and Jed Clampett, played by Buddy Ebson, was the head of the "Beverly Hillbillies" family.
5. In which 1990s U.S. TV series did newly-qualified doctor Joel Fleischman work in the remote fictional Alaskan town of Cicely?

Answer: Northern Exposure

Running for 110 episodes between 1990 and 1995, "Northern Exposure" charted the arrival of physician Joel Fleischman who suffered cultural shock when he arrived from New York City in the remote Alaskan town. Fleischman was played by New Yorker Rob Morrow, who later went on to star as FBI Special Agent Don Eppes in "Numb3rs".
6. Which member of the "Golden Girls" cast starred as the title character in the 1970s TV sitcom "Maude"?

Answer: Bea Arthur

Born Bernice Frankel in New York NY in 1922, Bea Arthur began her acting career on Broadway, winning a Tony award for her performance in "Mame" in 1966. The character of Maude Findlay first appeared on US TV in 1971, as the cousin of Mrs Bunker in "All in the Family". "Maude" debuted the following year, running for six series and 141 episodes between 1972 and 1978. Bea Arthur played substitute teacher Dorothy Zbornak throughout the "Golden Girls" run from 1985 until 1992.

She died of cancer at her home in Los Angeles aged 86 in 2009.
7. Dennis Weaver played the title role in the police drama "McCloud" from 1970 until 1977, but what was Marshall McCloud's first name?

Answer: Sam

The series began with Marshall Sam McCloud, a police officer from the small town of Taos in northern New Mexico, escorting a prisoner to New York City. He subsequently became involved in a murder investigation and soon found himself as a "cowboy in the big city" on special assignment with the NYPD.
The series ran for seven seasons on NBC, with 46 episodes and one TV movie.
8. What breed of dog was owned by the title character in TV's "Columbo"?

Answer: Basset hound

Los Angeles police detective Frank Columbo first appeared in a 1960 live episode of "The Chevy Mystery Shows", with New Yorker Bert Freed in the role. Peter Falk, born in New York NY in 1927, began his acting career in Hollywood, earning two Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations in his first four screen roles, for "Murder Inc" in 1960 and "Pocketful of Miracles" in 1961.
He first played Columbo in 1968, and appeared in 69 episodes of the popular TV series over the next 35 years, winning a Golden Globe and four Emmys in the process.
Columbo's basset hound made the first of numerous appearances in 1972. Numerous names were considered including Fido, Munch and Beethoven, but he was eventually named, simply, "Dog".
9. What was the police constable's name and badge number in the 1960s UK TV children's series 'Camberwick Green'?

Answer: P.C. McGarry Number 452

Narrated by Brian Cant, only a single series of thirteen 15-minute episodes of "Camberwick Green" was ever made. First broadcast in 1966, they have been shown on children's TV repeatedly since then for generations of youngsters to enjoy. Set in the fictional village in the county of Trumptonshire, the series reported on the daily lives of the inhabitants of Camberwick Green: police constable McGarry (number 452), Windy Miller, Jonathan Bell the farmer, Doctor Mopp, Mickey Murphy the baker and the village gossip, Mrs Honeyman. Later series, "Trumpton" in 1967 and "Chigley" in 1969 followed the lives of new characters in the neighbouring villages.
10. Which TV character lived at 1630 Revello Drive, Sunnydale, California?

Answer: Buffy Summers

1630 Revello Drive, Sunnydale CA was the home address of Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar between 1997 and 2003 in the hit US TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The alternatives were three more California residents. Jed Clampett (full name Jedediah is used only once in the entire series) was one of three characters to appear in all 274 episodes of the "Beverly Hillbillies". (Granny and Elly May also made 274 appearances, whilst Jethro Bodine, Jed's cousin, missed just two.) Brenda Walsh, twin sister of Brandon, was played by Shannen Doherty in the first four series of "Beverly Hills 90210". Lifeguard C.J. Parker was played by Pamela Anderson in "Baywatch".
