Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The New Deal", whose idea was it for Jeremy to be compelled to go and live in Colorado?

Answer: Elena's

Klaus wanted to send Elena a message, so he'd compelled Jeremy to attempt suicide. He stood out in the street and one of Klaus' hybrids drove at him. Alaric ran out to save Jeremy, and took the impact himself. It killed him, but his magical ring brought him back to life.

In an odd twist, the ring did not fully heal him this time and he needed Damon's blood to survive. Afterward, Jeremy was extremely mad at Tyler, who'd tricked him for Klaus. I think it finally began to sink into Tyler's mind that blindly following Klaus was not a good idea. Elena was crushed that Jeremy had to go through any of this stuff, including killing the hybrid that tried to kill him. So, Elena and Damon sent Jeremy away.

She wanted him to have a clean break from Mystic Falls, and Damon compelled him to do so.

Afterward, Damon told Elena how lucky Jeremy was to have a sister like her, and at the end of the episode, he kissed her.
2. Who traveled with Bonnie to meet her long lost mother in "The Ties That Bind"?

Answer: Elena

When the girls arrived, they first met a young man named Jamie. He told them that Abby had once dated his dad, and sort of raised him as well. Meanwhile, Caroline's father was trying to cure Tyler of his sire bond with Klaus, Damon was investigating Dr. Fell and Stefan was on his way out to Abby's place. Elena had tried to avoid Stefan finding out where they were, but it was no good. Jamie shot Stefan with wooden buckshot from a shotgun and he was in serious danger of being killed. Jamie and Abby had been compelled by one of Klaus's hybrids, in hopes of finding out where his family coffins were hidden. Tyler had turned and attacked Mr. Forbes, and Dr. Fell used blood stolen from Damon to save his life.

Unfortunately, he would die with the vampire blood in his system.
3. Whose mother was turned into a vampire in one episode, but then left town in the episode "Break on Through"?

Answer: Bonnie's

Poor Abby was turned into a vampire by Damon. She did not have to complete her transition, but decided to do so. Bonnie made her a daylight ring so she could be outside and not burn up, but Abby felt the urge to runaway from her daughter once again. Despite Caroline trying to convince her to stay, Abby left town.
4. Which Original sibling was killed in "The Murder of One"?

Answer: Finn

It turned out that another White Oak tree lived in Mystic Falls long after the originals had burned down the original tree. Three hundred years prior to present day, that tree had been used to make lumber for the creation of the Wickery Bridge. Sage found this out and destroyed the bridge to save the life of her sire and longtime love Finn. Since the siblings had all been linked in the spell by their mother, Sage knew one death would lead to Finn's no matter where he went. What she did not know, was that Alaric had the original sign for the bridge, also made from that tree.

The team cut it up and created 11 White Oak stakes. Finn was sacrificed first, in an attempt to kill them all. Unfortunately, they discovered afterward that his entire line died with him. So, back to square one. If Klaus and the others died, ALL vampires would die as well. Bonnie had lifted the uniting spell to save Jeremy from Klaus' threat, so Finn's death did not trigger the death of the rest.
5. In "Heart of Darkness", the bad Alaric resurfaced and claimed the final White Oak stake was hidden where?

Answer: in the vampire proof cave

Alaric was locked in the Salvatore basement/dungeon at his own request. He'd been getting visits from his "dark" self and felt it wasn't safe for others to have him walk freely amongst them. Also, he was trying to get that bad self to resurface in order to reveal the location of that final stake, hidden by the bad self.

It was the last weapon that could kill an Original, and Klaus wanted it. It took removing the death proof ring and having Stefan nearly kill him just to get baddie to emerge. Then, Stefan had to threaten the baddie with a broken neck to find out the location.

It was hidden in the cave that no vampire could enter. So, Rebekah took Alaric to retrieve it. Once there, she revealed to him that she was actually Esther using her daughter's body.

She proved it by entering the cave behind him. They struck up a deal to kill all Originals. Meanwhile, Elena and Damon were off to retrieve Jeremy, who was no longer safe in Denver. Stefan also hoped Elena could sort out her feelings for Damon at the same time. That pair shared a passionate exchange outside of a motel before Jeremy interrupted with news from the ghostly Rose.
6. Was Damon able to keep Alaric from turning into a vampire in episode 20, "Do Not Go Gentle"?

Answer: No

The bad Alaric agreed to become Esther's weapon against her children. Like her husband before him, she would turn Alaric into a super hunter vampire. After drinking Elena's blood and dying, he awoke as the good Alaric. He did not want to become a vampire and told everyone he'd die before completing the transition. Unfortunately for him, Esther was able to compel Bonnie to go to Alaric and feed him her own blood.

He did drink her, and turned into a vampire. Bonnie was not killed in the incident. Damon was with Alaric during this time, and just watched without intervening much as Bonnie helplessly walked into the cave to feed Alaric.
7. Who kidnapped Caroline and tried to get Elena to stake her in "Before Sunset"?

Answer: Alaric

Alaric wanted Elena to get on board with the 'death to all vampires' plan. He had Caroline tied to chair in his classroom, had pencils embedded in each hand and a Vervain soaked cloth tied in her mouth. He felt the more he tortured Caroline, the easier it would be for Elena to stake her out of her misery. Elena got the best of him, eventually, and freed Caroline.
8. In "Before Sunset", we discovered that this person's existence was tied to Elena being alive.

Answer: Alaric

In order to create an unkillable vampire, vampire hunter, Esther had to be sure that after Alaric ended all of the Originals, he himself would then be able to die. So, she made him an unkillable vampire by binding his special ring to the final oak stake.

He was staked with it in this episode, but of course he did not die. Bonnie made it clear that Alaric was indeed killable, and that they had to figure out how. Esther used Elena's human blood to link Alaric to her life, so that killing her would allow him to die as well.

He could either kill her after ending the vampire line, or allow her to live out her human life and die with her at its end. Elena figured this out, and saved Klaus' life by threatening to slice open her own jugular. In the end, the desecration spell they tried to use an Alaric, formerly used on Mikael, was used to stop Klaus. Why didn't they try that earlier in the season? The episode ended with Damon and Stefan on their way out of town to dump Klaus's body into the Atlantic Ocean.
9. In the season three finale, "The Departed", it was revealed that Elena actually met Damon before she met Stefan.

Answer: True

After everyone believed Klaus had been killed, Elena had a choice to make. Matt and Jeremy had planned to drug her, which Matt did and was then driving her out of town. They wanted to get her away from all of the danger. Since they thought Alaric had killed Klaus, and Klaus claimed to have created their entire bloodline, it was expected that they'd all die within an hour or so of him. Matt told Elena he could drive her back to Mystic Falls to be with Stefan at the end, or he could keep going toward Damon, who was about an hour out of town. Elena chose to go back. On the phone with Damon, she explained that it was not just Stefan she was going to say goodbye to.

When pressed to what her choice would be if it was just him and Stefan, she explained Stefan had shown up in her life just when she needed him most.

He'd basically brought her back to life after her parents' deaths. She said that maybe if she had met Damon first, it would be him she loved the most. Then, it was revealed from Damon's memories that he had met her first. That same night Stefan rescued her from drowning, she'd met Damon earlier that evening.

He compelled her to forget the meeting, which may be his worst regret. At that meeting, which came just on the heels of her ending things with Matt, Damon told her she wanted what everyone did- an all consuming love, and a life of adventure. She seemed intrigued by the thought. In the truck this night with Matt, she said that when she was with Damon she felt all consumed with him. Hmm.
10. How come Alaric died in the season three finale, "The Departed"?

Answer: Elena died

After Elena chose Stefan over Damon, Damon elected to allow Alaric to beat him to death. Alaric was in high pursuit of this objective, when an act of prevention on the part of Rebekah and Elijah intervened. They also believed Klaus to be dead, so they had to make sure Alaric was stopped.

They knew Elena's death would ensure this, so Rebekah stood on the Wickery Bridge and caused Matt to run his truck off and into the water. History repeated itself. Stefan was right behind Rebekah, hoping to save Elena from death. Meanwhile, Alaric was weakening as Elena began to drown in the river. Damon realized something was wrong, and called him "Ric" in affection. Damon did not really want his friend to die, and much more so knew if he did, that meant Elena must have died as well.

He held onto Ric as he died, and then high tailed it back home. Stefan did get there in time to save Elena, but this time she chose to save Matt. The first time, her father sacrificed himself, making Stefan save Elena. Elena died in the water that night. But, in the end, all was not lost. Meredith Fell had saved Elena's life the previous night by giving her vampire blood to heal her. So, at the end of the episode, Elena awoke once more... Elena became a vampire in the books as well, so it was only a matter of time.
