Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On September 4, 1972, the daytime version of "The Price is Right" debuted. About a week later, in primetime, another version of "The Price is Right" debuted. Who hosted this nighttime version?

Answer: Dennis James

In 1972, a half-hour nighttime version of "The Price is Right" starring Dennis James, debuted. When the daytime version of the show was changed to an hour long, the nighttime version remained at a half-hour. Dennis James hosted the show for the first five seasons, and Bob Barker replaced him as host for the last three seasons. The final episode of the nighttime show aired in 1980.
2. What was the first new game to debut with Drew Carey as host?

Answer: Gas Money

Gas Money premiered on September 22, 2008 and was the first to debut after Drew Carey became host of "The Price is Right" on October 15, 2007. The game was created by the then-producer Roger Dobkowitz and is played for a car and $10,000 in cash. Pay the Rent and Double Cross also debuted with Drew Carey as host, but Cliff Hangers debuted in the show's early years, when Bob Barker was host.
3. On the 40th season premiere of "The Price is Right", a game was played for four cars for the first time. What was the name of this game?

Answer: Race Game

The 40th season premiered on September 19, 2011. The first game to be played was Race Game, which was played for four cars. The contestant not only won all four cars but did it on her first try. Per the rules of the game, she was given 45 seconds to place the prices with the correct prizes. She only took 11 seconds to do that.
4. Who was the first announcer of "The Price is Right"?

Answer: Johnny Olson

Johnny Olson was the first announcer on "The Price is Right". He was the announcer from the show's premiere on September 4, 1972 until his passing in 1985. He never missed an episode. After his death, auditions were held to replace him, and it was eventually decided that the replacement announcer would be Rod Roddy.
5. When Plinko first debuted, what was the top prize?

Answer: $25,000

Plinko debuted on January 3, 1983 and allowed contestants to win up to $25,000 in cash. The middle slot was $5000, and contestants could get up to five Plinko chips. In 1998, the middle slot was changed to $10,000. Contestants could still get up to five Plinko chips meaning the most amount of money that could be won was upped to $50,000.
6. During the Bob Barker era, in which of the following games were there more than two possible choices?

Answer: Pick-a-Number

In Pick-a-Number, a single number is missing and the contestant must pick which of the three numbers provided belongs in that spot. This means they have a 1 in 3 shot of guessing the correct number, and thus winning the game.
Double Prices involves guessing which of the two prices shown is the correct one for the prize. One Right Price involves guessing which of the two prizes has an actual retail price of the price shown. Switch? involves the contestant deciding whether the prices shown are correct or if they should be switched. In each case, there are only one two options.
7. Has it been possible to win money on Any Number?

Answer: Yes

There are three things that can be won on the game: a car, another item that has three digits in its prize, and a piggy bank. In the piggy bank is cash. If the contestant guesses all the numbers in the piggy bank before guessing all the numbers in the other two prizes, the contestant wins whatever that amount is.

The piggy bank consists of three digits and is in dollars and cents, so the most amount of money that can be won is $9.87.
8. Which of the following was impossible to happen in the game Temptation?

Answer: Win the car but not the prizes

In Temptation, a contestant guessed the price of a car. After making a guess, the contestant had the option to take the prizes (but not the car) or go for the car. However, if even one number was wrong, the contestant would not win the prizes or the car. If all the numbers were correct, the contestant won the car and the prizes.

This means that it was impossible to win the car but not the prizes.
9. Which of the following segments was absent from half-hour episodes of "The Price is Right"?

Answer: Showcase Showdown

For the first three seasons, and some episodes after that, "The Price is Right" was only a half-hour episode. Under the half-hour format, there were three pricing games, each preceded by an item up for bids that the four players in Contestants' Row would bid on.

After the three pricing games were played, the two players who won the most money would participate in the Showcase. The Showcase Showdown, which features spinning the famous Big Wheel, only appears on hour-long episodes.
10. Through 2012, what happened in Hole in One if a contestant correctly ordered the grocery items from least expensive to most expensive?

Answer: They got a cash bonus.

If a contestant correctly guessed the order of the grocery items, they won a cash bonus and got to putt from the closest line to the hole. The amount of the bonus was $500 in daytime and $1,000 in primetime. Starting in 1986, a contestant was given a second putt if they missed their first putt, and the name of the game was changed to Hole in One (or Two).
