Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "West Wing" episode 11: "Lord John Marbury". In an amusing introduction to Lord Marbury, who does he mistake Leo McGarry for?

Answer: The butler

Lord Marbury is an eccentric British expert brought in to help with the India-Pakistan Kashmir border conflict. Leo points out that they have met 10-12 times, but Marbury insists he is the butler (and also calls him Gerald!).
2. "West Wing" episode 12: "He Shall, from Time to Time". In this episode we learn that President Bartlet has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Is it also the first time Leo finds this out?

Answer: Yes

Despite their long and close friendship, Bartlet's MS has been kept secret from his Chief of Staff until now. Needless to say Leo is not happy to have been kept in the dark. Bartlet points out that his life expectancy is normal, and that stress and fatigue bring on symptoms. Leo correctly points out that his job as President doesn't really help that situation.
3. "West Wing" episode 13: "Take out the Trash Day". According to Josh, which day of the week is it that no-one reads the paper?

Answer: Saturday

As per the episode's title, they call Friday "Take out the Trash Day" as no-one pays attention to the next day's paper. The episode centres around a sex education report that the White House doesn't want to release. In the end, they make a decision to delay the release for a year.
4. "West Wing" episode 14: "Take this Sabbath Day". When Josh meets Joey Lucas in this episode, what is he surprised to learn?

Answer: That she's a woman and she's deaf

In a very amusing scene, Joey Lucas finds Josh sleeping in his office, recovering from a big night out at a bachelor party. Kenny (her interpreter) yells at him, before he realises that Joey is actually a woman.
5. "West Wing" episode 14: "Take this Sabbath Day". Why does it turn out that the West Wing staff are able to have the weekend to attempt a last minute reprieve for a man who's about to be executed?

Answer: They don't execute people on the Sabbath

Leo is astounded to find out that despite a last-minute writ failing, the execution of death row prisoner Simon Cruz will happen on a Monday because "we don't execute people on the Sabbath". Along with Josh's rare night out, Sam also plans a weekend away, until he decides to answer a phone call on the way out from Cruz's lawyer. President Bartlet struggles all episode with his obvious personal views against capital punishment; but in the end he decides not to interfere and the man is executed.
6. "West Wing" episode 15: "Celestial Navigation". When C.J. has root canal and can't front the press, Josh steps in. What does he unintentionally announce to the press corp?

Answer: A secret plan to fight inflation

Josh sarcastically tells the press that there's a secret plan the President has come up with to fight inflation, but they take him seriously. They also manage to start a controversy about President Bartlet's smoking habit when Josh denies he has smoked recently and it is refuted by a member of the press saying "he bummed one off me on Air Force One two days ago".
7. "West Wing" episode 16: "Celestial Navigation". The President visits California for a star-studded fundraiser event. Which of the following celebrities does NOT appear as him or herself in this episode?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger

The President's staff run into some controversy in their brief LA visit. Firstly over the issue of flag-burning (when different people give them very different advice as to what it means to voters) and secondly over a new Congressional bill to be tabled that day to ban gays in the military (which almost causes the fundraiser to be cancelled).
8. "West Wing" episode 17: "The White House Pro-Am". Charlie and Zoey break up in this episode.

Answer: False

Charlie and Zoey have an argument about whether they should go to a club opening, but they end up making up at the end. The issue arises when it is relevealed Charlie and Zoey have been receiving death threats due to their relationship. The Secret Service deems the night club event too risky, so in the end Charlie and 'Bookbag' (Zoey's Secret Service name) have a quiet night watching movies in her dorm.
9. "West Wing" episode 18: "Six Meetings Before Lunch". Which character shows their superstitious side by demanding everyone not celebrate the confirmation of Justice Mendoza as new Supreme Court Judge before the votes are counted?

Answer: Toby

Toby opens a bottle of champagne as soon as the vote reches the required count of 51. Shortly after this, his mood is dampened when Josh sends Mandy to him to discuss asking China for two new panda bears for an American zoo.
10. "West Wing" episode 18: "Six Meetings Before Lunch". What song does C.J. perform to the rapture of many West Wing staff?

Answer: "The Jackal"

C.J. has clearly performed "The Jackal" before, and the staff are in great anticipation of seeing it again. She doesn't disappoint. We also find out in this episode that Sam's middle name is Norman.
11. "West Wing" episode 19: "Let Bartlet Be Bartlet". A damaging memo that Mandy wrote prior to joining the Bartlet administration surfaces. What is it referred to several times throughout the episode?

Answer: A 'piece of paper'

Needless to say, the rest of the staff (C.J. in particular) are furious that Mandy didn't destroy the memo when she came to work for them. The memo basically sets out her opinions of how to beat the current administration by focusing on their weaknesses. This doesn't help with the other central theme of the episode, which is the falling poll numbers for Bartlet.
12. "West Wing" episode 20: "Mandatory Minimums". This episode revolves around discussions of mandatory minimums for what types of crimes?

Answer: Drug crimes

We meet Toby's ex-wife, Andy for the first time in this episode. She's a Congresswoman who has strong views that mandatory minimums are racist due to the fact that drug crimes committed by African Americans have much higher sentences attached to them.
13. "West Wing" episode 21: "Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics". The West Wing staff spend much of this episode waiting for the results of a new poll. What is the surprising outcome that no-one sees coming?

Answer: A jump of 9 points

Most of the staff agree that the poll will show the administration holding steady at 42%, while Toby says they will dip slightly. Only C.J. predicts a bump, but no-one expects they will go up 9 points in a single poll.
14. "West Wing" episode 22: "What Kind of Day has it Been?". Does Toby's brother die as a result of a space shuttle crash in this episode?

Answer: No

Toby's brother David was in a shuttle in this episode, which was having mechanical trouble. However, towards the end of the episode we discover that he has landed safely.
15. "West Wing" episode 22: "What Kind of Day has it Been?". In a thrilling season finale, what is the last thing that happens in the episode as the President leave his town hall meeting?

Answer: Shots are fired on the President and his staff

This episode is the last time Mandy ever appears on the show, and she's never even mentioned again. At the very end of the episode, we hear someone yell out "who's been hit?", a question that won't be answered until season 2 begins.
