Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Adventures of Superman
Answer: Kal-El
"Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings at a single bound, Superman, strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men." This was one of the first TV series featuring a live actor playing what had been a cartoon character.
This is also an example of one of the first alien super heroes. It's hard to think of Superman as an alien. (The 1950s series starred George Reeves.) However, in the first story, a baby named Kal-El was sent to Earth just before his home planet of Krypton exploded.
The first cartoon film said that Kal-El grew up in an orphanage and changed his name to Clark Kent when he grew up. His back story changed over the years.
2. My Favorite Martian
Answer: Martin
This was one of the first characters with magical powers, which were explained by saying he was a Martian. His spaceship had crashed to Earth, and he called himself Uncle Martin (Ray Walston), claiming to be a relative of the man who lived at the house where he crashed. Beginning in September 1963, this featured a man who could turn invisible and cause objects to float in the air, a year before "Bewitched" (September 1964).
3. Highway to Heaven
Answer: Jonathan
This was a 1980s on the road series in which Jonathan and his friend traveled to different places to help people who were in trouble. Jonathan (Michael Landon) was an angel. He had super strength when getting into a fight and sometimes used powers. In one episode he became angry and threw things at a movie theater. He was punished, presumably by God, when his powers were taken away.
4. Out of This World
Answer: Evie
In this case a girl had powers because her father was an alien from outer space. Evie (Maureen Flanagan) had a mother from Earth and a father (Burt Reynolds) who did not live on Earth, but he could talk to his daughter through an alien communication device.
She could freeze time. Most of the four seasons of the series involved her mother's adult friends. This was a 1980s first run syndicated half hour comedy.
5. Out of the Blue
Answer: Random
This was produced by the people who made "Mork and Mindy" and "Happy Days". Random (Jimmy Brogan) was an apprentice angel who helped a single woman raise children. The series only lasted a few episodes in the late 1970s.
6. The Flintstones
Answer: Gazoo
Gazoo (Harvey Korman) was a little floating green man who made friends with Fred Flintstone in the 1960s cartoon series "The Flintstones". He used powers to try to help, but somehow he caused Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble to get into trouble. Gazoo then had to use his powers to get them out of trouble. Gazoo popped up again in the live action movie "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas".
7. Second Chance
Answer: St. Peter
This might be the only time that a Biblical person was a regular character in a sitcom. Charles (Kiel Martin) was told by St. Peter (Joseph Maher), the angel said to be in charge of who gets to heaven, that he was dead, but he wasn't good enough to get to heaven. St. Peter sent Charles back to the past so he could advise his younger self, Chaz (Matthew Perry).
After a few episodes the series dropped the characters of Charles and St. Peter, and changed its name to "Boys Will Be Boys". This was on the fledgling Fox Network in the late 1980s. (This was not the more recent series based on "Frankenstein".)
8. Good Heavens
Answer: Mr. Angel
Mr. Angel (Carl Reiner) granted the wish of a different person each week in this anthology series. It ran from March 8, 1976 to June 26, 1976.
9. Star Trek
Answer: Spock
One of the most popular TV aliens was Spock (Leonard Nimoy), second in command of the Starship Enterprise in the space travel TV series "Star Trek". He was super strong when he needed to be, but most of the time he was nonviolent and solved problems with logic. Dr. McCoy sometimes argued with Spock about what to do, calling Spock a "green-blooded Vulcan". Spock was featured in several big screen "Star Trek" movies.
10. Starman
Answer: Paul
The series was based on the movie "Starman", about a ball of energy which cloned a body from a hair sample from a woman's dead husband. The series featured Paul (Robert Hays), the returned alien, who found his son and spent the series looking for the son's missing mother. This was an hour drama in the late 1980s.
